I thought it was very interesting because it really shows how people who are not in a good place can get into cults in the first place. Dani is grieving and is surrounded by people who don't empathize with her and who dismiss her feelings... so of course, she finds a group of people who will literally get onto the floor and cry with her and she is so desperate for that feeling of belonging that she ends up joining a very fucked up cult.

The sister killed herself in the beginning. The tube went from the car to her mouth. That's why she was specifically traumatized/stunned by the suicides. The reason I gather this particular thing happens every 90 years is to spike the gene pool so to speak. They had a guy impregnate a girl so she will have an unrelated baby and brought in a new woman so she would also have an unrelated child. Between the death age and the 90 years you kinda prevent from it getting super incest. The only exception being the profit guy that they specifically incest to get (inbreeding is incest). In 90 yrs you have maybe 3-4 generations so yeah shouldn't be super bad and they don't do say, siblings.

This movie is so effed up. I remember when she was dancing with the girls, for one second I felt happy for her because she 'belonged' and then I was like, no wtf sarah😂 I think they did a great job of showing how a vulnerable person can be roped into sth like this

I don't know if it got through in your first watch so I just wanted to tell you that the sister actually killed herself and the parents. She commited sulcide by taping the tub connected to the car engine to her face and also to her parents bedroom without them know, which is also why she send the "goodbye" message at the beginning of the movie to her sister. sorry if that was already clear, I wasn't sure ^^

The four people smashing the old man's face look like they're all from a different "season", so my guess is that it's a farewell from all the seasons of his life.

I love your commentary. It's so insightful and you pay attention to the details, and appreciate symbolism. To answer your question: Some people who experience trauma, are under intense stress, and/or are very upset can vomit. It's definitely an extreme reaction but it's involuntary.

There is a theory that the guy who took them to the cult actually killed Dani's family and framed the sister. "I was most excited for you to come."

I would have just ran away day one. It doesn't matter if you're in the middle of nowhere, the forrests are not that hard to survive in in Sweden. It's in the middle of summer so there should be lots of berries and wild plants to eat, and there's plenty of streams for water. That combined with barely any hostile wildlife and good temperatures you should be fine. Just go in a straight line until you reach a road and just follow it. If you're very unlucky you might come across wolves or a moose, but honestly I would rather take my chances with them than these crazy people. Oh and I can't understand how the outsiders thought it was reasonable for the cult to be worried about traffic laws but not murder?

I love Ari Aster and this is one of my favorite movies. You caught so much with your first watch too, but there’s so much more in the background throughout the movie. Almost all of the wall art is foreshadowing, everyone has a different marking or rune on their clothes meaning something different, they talk about or show everything before it happens it’s just so detailed and so much research went into making this movie and I love that level of commitment.

I wonder if the reason why Dani doesn't look so heartbroken when her boyfriend is burning is because maybe a part of her wanted him to? He has been pretty careless towards her for a while and because she didn't want to be left alone she stayed with him. And maybe she smiles in the end because the people in the cult shared her pain and burned the boyfriend to punish him for hurting her? Their devotion to their queen?

This whole movie made me feel like I was on a hallucinogenic drug

Small detail, but the girl and the bear are drawn by John Bauer and his art featured often in swedish fairytale books when I was young. They're always a bit dark and mysterious. I really like "Prinsessan Tuvstarr", kinda resembles a dark Narcissus plot.

Lol this movie is a hell of a psychological ride … the way I look at it is the girl Danny, I think her name is was already broken when she got there. Cults pray on people who are emotionally compromised, people with no family, people who have experienced trauma, and people who are out cast who are longing to be excepted. For Danny she was emotionally drained from trying to keep her dying relationship alive. She hated feeling like she was a burden. Then her sister kills her self and her parents so she’s literally morning over 3 people as well as the state of her relationship because deep down she knows that her boyfriend is only staying with her because her family died. So when the guy invited his friends he knew that Danny’s bf would likely invite her out of guilt. I believe getting Danny to join after her parents died was the icing on the cake to the original goal. The cult doesn’t kill everyone that goes there. I think there main goal is actually to bring in new blood for procreation as well is getting others to join them again for procreation and to replace the people they sacrifice. If you notice they only killed the people who disrespect there cultural beliefs. Like the first group that freaked out during the suicide sene. They didn’t hear them out and immediately wanted to leave. The maze runner guy peed on the ancestral tree of ashes he was killed next. Then the black guy because he went through the book after being told not to. And finally Danny’s boyfriend. As the may queen she was given the deciding power to choose weather or not she wanted to sacrifice her boyfriend. That’s why he was ultimately killed. It was the ultimate break up. When she starts crying and then stops and smiles that was the point she officially cracked and excepted everything that has happened because she had found her new home and family. The reason why is because when she’s in pain she doesn’t have to bear it alone ( pun fully intended lol) . Whenever she’s in pain or others are in pain the people mimic it and help carry the load so that the emotional toll isn’t so heavy.

why do I keep coming to his movie so much? I see the name Midsommar, and I immediately need to check it out, knowing I'm going to have nightmares

Was waiting for this one!!! I think the parents were accidental deaths, because the sister was just trying to kill herself, but the parents got tangled/"roped" in. I literally... when I saw this movie... I just sat for like 45 minutes. Half looking things up, half just sitting and taking it all in. Lol. One thing to note is that the director, through camerawork and other things WANTED the viewer to feel like they were on a drug trip during this movie. Happy to know you're feeling better Sean!!

At 17:11 - The death of the elders isn't the "once in a lifetime" event. That happens to all elders who reach the age of 72, and they do the cliff-diving death at Midsommar. The once in a lifetime event happens once every 90 years. You haven't seen it yet.

It's heavily debated if the sister actually killed herself and her parents or if Pelle set it up knowing her sister had a lot of problems. I like that the end and the beginning are open to the audience. I also like to imagine we're actually seeing Dani in 3 stages. Film Dani being introduced to the cult, the cult leader representing Dani at that age, and the 2 at 72 are the end of Dani and Pelle. The two women do resemble Dani and the man does resemble Pelle. I just like the idea that as we are seeing Dani's indoctrination into the cult we're also getting her whole life with the cult without realizing it.

when i saw the cliff I was like , shits going down HAHAHA

The first scene is the sister commiting murder suicide. The boyfriend is a gaslighting prick who is too afraid to break up with his girlfriend. The girlfriend already has some issue of her own and then she has to go through mouring her sister and parents too. The people got killed when they disrespected the culture or the people or their rituals in some way. At the end the main character is fully indoctrinated into their culture/cult. They've cried with her and celebrated her and cares for her while her boyfriend has disrespected her almost all the way through the movie.

So, this is weird information to know but/ Even though it’s definitely sketchy that Christian unknowingly ingested the period blood, it could honestly be worse. (I know, hard to believe.) Menstruation blood has actually been proven to be the cleanest blood in the body. So, at least it wasn’t like somebody cut their dirty hand with a rusty knife and put that in his drink? I don’t know-

I watched Grace Randolph's review of this movie, and she put forward an interesting take. Which is that these Americans allowed themselves to get sucked into the cult activities because it's a Western cult. If they had been studying, for example, an Amazonian cult, they'd have studied it with more caution, simply observed, without taking part in the ceremonies. But because this was a Western cult, the Americans, being of the West themselves, figured, "Oh, this is just an old European cult; sure, it's kind of weird, but there's nothing to fear here." So, they had let their guard down, got sucked into the proceedings, and paid the price.

At 22:03 - At the beginning of their stay here, they saw the kids playing a game. They were playing "Skin the Fool." This guy proved that he was a fool by peeing on the ancestor's tree and not understanding how he desecrated their sacred place. And so... While I don't condone this type of thing, that is what happened.

At 21:00 - Okay. The research is about the rituals of a small community that does their own thing. The menstrual blood in the drink and the pubic hair are part of the thing you saw once they got to the town. The dance where the lady catches the eye of a guy. She puts a runic stone under his bed, she shaves her pubic hair and puts it in her prospective "mate's" drink, you see him blitzed a bit, and the result is a wedding. (Or, at the very least, a child.)

From various things I've read the reason the flowers are on Dani's photo, is because the cult was actually in on everything. Basically they murdered her sister and parents. They had a hand in everything, which I thought was an interesting twist if that were the case.

Here's what I notice about Sean. He's really smart on the "obvious plots" but when it comes to emotions of characters and how it can clouded their judgments, suddenly everything is lost and basically just call them stupid or he thought as a plot holes 😁

I just had to google to see if this was a remake or follow on from the Wicker Man and Wicker Tree because it pretty much follows the same concept. You should check them out (and no not the Nicholas Cage version unless you want a good laugh instead of intrigue)

The old man don't decide to stay in the flam. They gave him a drug and say him that he will not feel pain with it. It was a lie. He did feel the pain but was paralyzed by the drug so he can't move and run away.

Recommendation! MISS YOU ALREADY (Toni Collette and Drew Barrymore). A perfect mix of comedy and drama.
