Actually she did, there are outtakes/bloopers of her laughing at his antics. Its why that scene is a bunch of cuts and not one whole take. He was a genius at comedy and everyone can't help but laugh 😆😆

I can't even imagine how that same actress handled trying to keep in-character when she later worked with Jim Carrey, another great comedy actor, in "Liar Liar" XP

really. i agree that it's better some divorced couples stay that way. no more fights that kids have to listen to. i had to go through that for 11 years till my parents split and i have to say i was able to go to bed feeling safer once it was over between my mom and dad

It's interesting how it also reveals the prejudices of the legal system of the time- a homeless dad is one thing, and the court is willing to give him a chance, but a homeless dad who dresses like a woman needs to be supervised around his own children.

ive talked to my cousin on how i like bittersweet endings, and how we dont get a lot of movies or shows with them. Mrs. Doubtfire is one of those few i can put on that list 👌

My parents are separated, but they get along. They just can't see each other very often because my stepmother is jealous of her. So in a way I am lucky. It must be hard to see your parents fight.

Same except my parents are separated. But everytime they try to live together, it never works out. Even rn my parents are living together but only for my dad to find another place. But it's been a year... soon they'll be getting a divorce. My mom and dad are great parents but the two aren't good for each other if that makes sense.

Ve Neill is an incredible makeup artist. She won three Academy Awards, for Beetlejuice, Mrs. Doubtfire and Ed Wood. She was nominated for Edward Scissorhands, Batman Returns, Hoffa, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl & Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. She was also a judge on the reality show "Face Off". I loved that show. I miss that show. Watching what those make-up artists did in 3 days what would take teams of artists to do in 3 months was amazing. That is a show I wish they would reboot.

Robin Williams and Sally Field had both gone through divorces, and the director's parents had divorced, so they knew better than to end it with reconciliation. You have to applaud the maturity of that.

Thats the better lesson for kids too, because the world doesn't operate like a fairytale ending, but that doesn't mean it can't still be happy or that you can't work through it.

That was a very good decision. Kids or adults, movies must have a touch with reality that everyone can assimilate with.

@@lulystalgianature2968 Very true. Divorce/break ups should really be talked about more & not have such a stigma attached. People still loving each other even after divorcing should be normalized, too. When you share children, a certain connection will forever be there.

It wasn't because it was a hot day though, it was actually the heat from the set lighting that caused it to melt, which they didn't realize would happen. But you're spot on that he just went with it lol.

Yes, exactly! And what's also frustrating to me is that when he dons the Mrs. Doubtfire persona, he suddenly starts being stricter with the kids, cleaning the house, learning to cook, etc. Which proves that he could easily have learned how to be a better parent/adult while he and Miranda were still married, but he couldn't be assed to when he could just make her deal with all that stuff and just act like one of the kids himself. It's also frustrating that he goes through all this trouble when initially he was only denied shared custody for a temporary 3-month period; three months isn't that long, and if he'd applied all that effort and energy to getting his new house and job in order, he would've easily gotten shared custody of the kids. And don't even get me started on how creepy and invasive it is to lie about who you are to someone and get them to talk to you about things that they would never tell you if they knew who you really were (re: all the conversations he has with Miranda as Mrs. Doubtfire). I loved this movie a lot as a kid, but now that I'm older, it's really hard to enjoy.

All of those things would be perfect reason to go to therapy together; You can't work it out on your own, but if you want to change, you can get help. This is the reason why professionals have studied for years, so they can help people with their struggles. Of course, knowing that movies rather go for the story lines with the least amount of therapy in them for dramatic plotline purposes, I just roll my eyes at that part.

@@BossyMafia We don't know what happened before the movie started. I know a couples where one partner tried for a long time to get the other into therapy, but they refused right up until divorce happened, then suddenly it's "let's go the therapy" and everyone thinks the original partner is the jerk for not wanting to be strung along anymore.

@@ShadowsintheEyes Realistically, of course his actions show a lack of effort for his wife. This is also a movie, and not reality, so there's that. I do believe however that there's something to be gleaned here from his psychology. There's clearly a dramatic disparity in the love he has for his wife, and the love he has for his children. The efforts he made to make his children happy were no different at the start of the film from the efforts he made to spend time with them in the middle and end of the film. Something I think is missing in this film, at least out loud, is the fact that he doesn't love his wife any longer. Or, at the very least, he's fooling himself into believing he still loves her. If he did love her, he would have made as much effort for her as for his children. Neither of these parents are the "good guy" in this film. It's your opinion that he was creepy and intrusive into his wife's life. I agree. I won't let it not be said that she, also, made it very clear that she wanted to use their children as a weapon against their father. That, too, is terrible behavior. I believe that the point of this film is more to highlight the devastation of divorce than to blame anyone though.

Guess society blamed ur mom n she was more emotionally invested in the relationship than ur dad. That's the way it usually is in South Asia.

@@nooralimran4643 no, my mom is legit obsessive and probably in need of many years of therapy. She was physically and emotionally abusive to my brother and I, and my father was a deadbeat who moved back to Mexico to avoid paying child support rather than getting a decent job and actually getting visitation. Sad story.

my mom was obsessed too. when my dad left, she would take me, my brothers and sister in the car and stalk dad and his latest piece of ass to confront them. whenever we went to go visit dad, she would ask us questions on what he was doing and who he was seeing. i finally had to stand up to mom and tell her talk to him yourself. it's not the kids' job to be the messenger

You worded what I was thinking and feeling so perfectly. This is the first time I've gone back to this movie, older, and with now divorced parents, and even through seeing these snippets I got emotional and the message hit hard.

Not to mention generic. Too much Parent Trap or actually the same in Three Men and a little Lady. Stewart being only against the dad (and from an outsider view he does seem a loser) makes his character not at fault.

I was actually very glad that they didn't go with that because I like how Stuart actually loves the kids, he wasn't bad he was a very good guy and cared about both Miranda and the kids

He wasn’t a bad guy. There wasn’t really an enemy in this movie and there didn’t need to be.

I’m actually kind of glad they didn’t make him into a villain, because, in hindsight, Daniel’s actions are far worse. It also narratively feel like Daniel never needed to change, since the original script also had him and Miranda get back together.

I agree. They both played their parts, I think. Even if they didn’t get back together, I think they’d have benefited from therapy, even divorced, to let out their frustrations instead of this.

i still have problems with her. like the divorce part. did she really need to spring it on her kid's birthday? couldn't she have waited till the next morning when the kids were gone to talk to Daniel? or the part where she takes the kids away early?

I feel like the movie tries to show how children are oftentimes the victims of relationships falling out like this (ie: people not liking the mother for talking about divorce in the middle of her son's birthday). And as much as the "love message" for the kids is important, this movie is also important for parents who are getting a divorce. Never forget your kids in the equation, because they're there, they're not stupid or blind, they know what's happening and they're hurting even tho you're hurting too (because of course a divorce hurts). My main problem with the movie is how fast the wife (I don't remember her name sorry) moves on, how fast she gets into another relationship and puts her children in the middle of it. I'd even argue that her kids are SUPER CHILL for not throwing fits about it, given their age and how close they are to their father, and I'd say it's a flaw from the movie not to adress it: whether it's the children's pain at their parents splitting up and having to accept "a new man" so fast, or the fact that the mother never properly adresses it, how "cool" her children are or have the kids express how they feel about all of this (especially the two older ones, they're teenagers, they should have a bigger voice in all of this). Like, these kids hate the nanny (at first) because they wanted their father to be with them, but they're fine with Pierce Brosnan? Yeh, nah. Anyway, that's my main issue, even tho these parts are hilarious thanks to Robin Williams, I always thought the romance with Pierce Brosnan was really unnecessary, or at least, played too explicitely (they're not just friends or flirting, they are together and she's putting her children in the middle of it, is what I mean). All in all, like a lot of medias talking about divorce, the main thing shouldn't be whether or not the parents are getting back together, or even who is right and who is wrong, it's about finding the middle ground, accepting how things are, your faults and move on from these, to find a peaceful, balanced relationship with your ex, because there are your children in the middle of it. And I think this movie played it very well, especially Sally and Robin, of course, they translate so much emotions through their acting. And both characters ultimately prove that they played their parts in the end of their relationship: Daniel changes a lot during this movie (you'd say "grows up" but he's an adult so... let's say he gets more serious in his lifestyle), and the wife gets more emotionally avaiable to her children (and her husband, even tho it's through Mrs Doubtfire: one of my favorite scene is their scene in the kitchen, where the wife finally gets the chance to unload how she feels about Daniel). And when you see it, it's the other's absence that "forces" them to do so, or allows them to do so. And yes, you could see how they'd make better parents and a better couple at the end of the movie, but that doesn't happen because that's just not how human relationships work. I also remember struggling with the mother's pov more when I was younger, but I also didn't remember how irresponsible Daniel was. It's one thing to let your kid have a good birthday, it's another when you take a step back and see the rest of the damage: how much he loses his jobs while she's the "responsible one" that builds all their financial stability, how he, yes, undermines her authority with the children and does it in front of said-children, making her the bad guy all the time. Also, how there is a difference between a good birthday party and an irresponsible one. And of course you could say "she should have talked about it", but look at how he acts when she talks about it, he yet again, undermines what she's saying and acts as if it was her fault, that her being like this is because she's a "control freak" even tho she was forced into the position of the control freak because someone had to keep the family together.

Bicentennial Man is very good. Very sad ending too.

Actually, that scene wasn't ad-libbed, it was always in the script. The part that was ad-libbed was when the cream on his face started to melt from the heat of the set lights and it started dripping into the drinks. He just went with it and so did the actress and thank goodness they did because it was hilarious! I never would have guessed it wasn't planned.

In her defense, she thought the kids were upstairs with thier doors closed.

Yeah, but I think that still doesn't excuse the fact that after the divorce she used the kids like an emotional weapon against Daniel. Like how she says "Are my kids ready?" and taking him completely out of the equation. I get the reason for divorce, I would of probably divorced him too, but that's no excuse to get the kids wrapped up in your mind games with each other and to deprive him visiting rights.

I think personally Miranda was more in the wrong. Yeah Daniel messed up a lot, but he was only trying to do his best and give his kids good memories. He always tried to have their best interests at heart, even if sometimes he was a bit misguided. At least he tried. We never saw Miranda read to her kids, or help them with their homework. That always seemed to be down to ‘Mrs Doubtfire’. (Not that I’m getting at Miranda or anything, it was just a small observation). I found that Miranda seemed to move on very quickly after separating from Daniel. There was no time for any of them (the kids included) to decompress and just be for a while. It was almost instant. Yeah the kids liked Stu, but I don’t think that it was right to jump into a new relationship so quickly after being in a long term one for so long.

Same...I really understand Miranda's side now as an adult. However what made this movie sad is that they could have probably saved their marriage if Daniel was the man he was at the end. By the end he was responsible and a better father....at the same time it looks like he needed to go the hard way to really grow and be the best version of himself.

Nope, never be on Miranda side. She tried to take away what little time he does gets with them. Like she was an hour late dropping them off and came early to pick them up. Acting like they should be ready to go when she shows up early without warning. When they could have stayed with their dad while she went and did her errands. No reason to hire a nanny when Daniel could watch them and spend time with his kids
