Fun fact: The steam locomotive driver is the late O. Winston Link, a famous railroad photographer of the mid 20th century. He is primarily known for his incredible black&white night shots of Norfolk&Western steam trains in the final days of steam in the 1940s and 50s The locomotive he is driving in this movie was his own personal former Norfolk&Western steam engine that he himself restored over the years. If you look up his work, I guarantee you won't be disappointed!

If you can get access to the commentary, it's done by Homer Hickam himself, and he goes into a lot of detail about the background, things that were changed (shortening the timeline from 3 years to 1, and he never actually worked in the mines, etc). It's an informative listen. There's also the bio he wrote, Rocket Boys.
@scottarooni

I forgot to mention that "October Sky" was directed by Joe Johnston who also directed "The Rocketeer" (1991); the original "Jumanji" (1995); "Jurassic Park III" (2001); and "Captain America: The First Avenger" (2011). He was also an associate producer on "Willow" (1988). Johnston certainly has quite the resume!

This is a favorite of mine for sure. The book version was called Rocket Boys but they changed the name to October Sky because apparently according to wiki, women over thirty would never see a movie titled Rocket Boys lol. And it's kind of cool now because the title Rocket Boys is hidden in the title October Sky. The letters are just rearranged differently.

It was very popular when it aired but seems to have been forgotten, I don't see anyone talk about it now. I'd suggest having tissues nearby, it's a pretty sad story. Thanks.

The film is exciting, and I love it a lot, but you want the full story, read the book. It's got more characters, more AUK launches, and lots of amusing lines that never fail to make me chuckle imagining the scenes IRL. Read it in High School Freshman Year, and 16 years later I still love that book and this movie

This movie always has a special place in my heart. My father wasn’t always pleasant to be around. He never hit or even disciplined us, but he could be moody, the kind of person you had to tiptoe around. He could make you wanna disappear through the floor when he got ranting. But we never doubted that he loved and doted on us ( in his own way). He was a dedicated provider fir his family, working loooong, hard, grimy shifts in a steel mill. This movie came out around the year Dad suddenly passed, (I was 19 when we lost him) though I don’t think I saw it for at least a couple years after it’s release. It’s absolutely ASTOUNDING watching Chris Cooper in this. He looks, acts, talks, dresses, wears his hair exactly like my dad. It’s almost like watching my dad on film. Quite tall (6’3”), similar build, even their work clothes are practically identical, if you take away the lamp on the hard hat. Dad was even a supervisor like mr Hickam. The temper is spot on. I love watching ChrisCooper in this, and other things I’ve seen him in. Incidentally, dad would have been pretty much the exact age as Homer when this story takes place, (late 50’s). Yup.. just checked.. real Homer hi jam was 11 months younger than dad lol It’s a great story, inspiring, and almost like seeing my dad again for 1 12 hrs.

i'm so glad you loved it! this was the first movie of jake gyllenhaal's i saw, and his performance through the whole thing was wonderful but it was that scene between him and his dad in the kitchen where he yells that he's leaving and he won't even look back, man... in the hands of another actor that line could have been really cheesy? but for me, that was a moment when i sat up and said "okay, this is an actor we need to keep our eyes on." and look at him now :) but yeah, this is one of the best coming of age movies i've ever seen, just so sweet and wholesome and nostalgic and REAL and really so lovely all around. i adore it and i've never seen a YT reaction to it, so thank you very much for this.

Hey Nick! I'm so glad that you enjoyed the movie. You mentioned in the description that your reaction was pretty rough. Actually, I think you held it together really well! 😀 From the moment that Homer tells his father that he is quitting his job at the mine and then declares, "I want to go into space," I am choked up for the entire rest of the movie. Every scene is touching or triumphant. When Homer tells his teacher in her hospital bed that "the Rocket Boys are going to college," I have to grab the tissues! Of course, the final rocket launch packs such an emotional wallop for me and it is a great ending to the film. I love the relationships Homer had with his Dad, his friends and his teacher. Nick, I hope that your parents are as proud of you as we all are. Your reactions are really great and they have touched many people. Keep following your dreams, man!
