I truly think the biggest charm of this movie is how we honestly don't know if the fairytale world was real or just imagination of a traumatised girl trying to retionalise her bad situation

Exactly. I think the same.
@mrsfahrenheit

I think the same but I think Guillermo del Torro kinda confirmed that the fairytale world was real- at least for him. He said that there were some indicators like how she was able to use the magic chalk to draw a door to get away from the captain and the Mandrake that was indeed under the bed and some other things I sadly forgot. But I think he also said that the movie’s ending will still be open for interpretation
@WastedPo
@WastedPo 3 года назад
Yeah, I also heard Guillermo say in an interview that he felt the fairy tale elements were real. However, I personally prefer to interpret them as existing only in Ofelia's mind. I just find that so much more poignant and meaningful - having them be a visual representation of her coping mechanisms. Of course, that also means the ending is pure tragedy, rather than happy, but I think I find that more moving as well.

@@WastedPo I think that the fact that nobody sees any of that fairy world, makes it enough tragic, poignant and meaningful, so that I'm ok with the director saying it is real... like it's real, yet it doesn't matter at all to anybody in the real world

@@jagwolf8079 I always took it as kids can see the fairy tale world because of their innocence and their willingness to believe. As adults we learn to grasp reality and forget about the magical worlds we once believed in. So in essence I see it as adults in this movie not being able to see the fairy tale world because they have distanced themselves from it.

@@JessKalinow agree - I think the Victorians are the reason so much of the blood and grit has been left out of fairy tales as people know them today. Ex: in Snow White, the Evil Queen comes to her 3 times trying to kill her, and when Snow White gets married the Evil Queen is forced to dance in red-hot iron shoes at the wedding. Also Cinderella's stepsisters carve up their feet to fit the slipper. And many of the stepmothers in Grimms' collections were originally mothers - just changed because the idea of mothers being cruel or abandoning their children was considered too disturbing.

The Little Mermaid too. Ariel is betrayed by her man and 'dies' becoming bubbles/seafoam, but as her intentions were pure she is reborn as an angel of fire and air instead. Oddly the Ghibli film 'Ponyo on a Cliff by the Sea' (or just Ponyo) is a more accurate rendition of this tale than Disney's Little Mermaid - despite Ghibli not being known for especially accurate reproductions of western stories/tales (see Howl's Moving Castle book -> film differences for why).

Definitely a twist to how "typical" fairy tale characters look! As for your intro, please don't feel like you need to control your emotions just so we don't think you're "overreacting." We appreciate true and real reactions, especially when you're honest with things that scare or tug on your heartstrings.

I worked in the theatres when this came out and so many parents wanted to bring their small children to see this "fairy tale" thinking it was for kids.

The best dark fantasy movie ever imho, there’s nothing else quite like it! Apparently Stephen King was in the audience when Pan’s Labyrinth was first screened, and he flinched at the pale man chase scene. There’s also a song inspired by this film - Pneumonia by Björk 💕

I adore that the Faun is almost entirely practical effects. He's wearing a costume and the only thing they do is CG out his legs. Those are his body movements, and to me that's the most impressive part.

Apparently, director Guillermo Del Toro noticed horror author Stephen King was in the audience during one of the premieres, and when King jumped in fright during the "Pale Man" scene with the eyes in the hands, Del Toro quoted, "My movie scared Stephen King.......That was better than winning an Oscar!!"

I always ugly cry at the very end when it switches between Ofelia's lifeless body and her fairytale princess vision. I've always interpreted the scene where the captain finds her talking to nothing to mean that the fairytale stuff is all in her head, so that she just desperately clung to stories and deluded herself to help her through her trauma. It's a very sad reading of the film, but I can't see it in any other way than a child being killed and her mind trying desperately to place a comforting lens over her reality during her final breaths. For people who interpret this story as the fairytale part being real, I'm jealous lol

Something I wish you had of spoke more about was the kind of frightening reality of the film vs the creep factor of the fantasy. We basically see a little girl navigating this terrifying adult world, lose her only family and then is killed herself. Her dying moments being wishing a fantasy was real and she was a princess. Makes me cry every time I watch this movie.

I saw this movie for the first time in history class that was all about modern European History through cinema/film. This movie very accurately displays the situation in Spain during WW2. They had a rough time. Everyone did. But Spain was basically in a civil war, and the atrocities committed to the civilians were still awful.

Guillermo Del Toro is an absolutely brilliant filmmaker. There is not one thing in his creations that is not thought out with the utmost clarity(from the imagery of the tree, the entrance to the labyrinth and such being the curve(which also are the fallopian tubes, symbolizing Ophelia's baby brother), to the detail of the Faun slowly becoming younger as the movie goes on, to the shoes piled in the Pale Man's den which harkens to WW2 imagery). I got to see the Del Toro exhibit "At Home With Monsters", I believe it was called, when it was here in Toronto two years back. So many props and art pieces from his enormous collection, including the coffin from "The Strain", props and costumes from "Crimson Peak"and statues of the Pale Man and the Faun from "Pans Labyrinth". It also explained his fascination with insects and their longevity. SPOILERS, Skip this paragraph if you don't want them: The man the Captain shoots on the hill and his dead friend(who can't speak since they were shot in the throat)are from another film of Del Toro's and are the same actors, which are the two main boys from "The Devils Backbone", who he confirmed are the same characters, a good connection between the two movies. Ophelia eating the food from the table is based on mythology. Eating food from the faerie world is said to make all other foods taste terrible in comparison, but it can also be connected to the myth of Hades and Persephone(Hades tricked Persephone by making her eat food from the Underworld, which meant she had to stay there for six months(one for each seed of a pomegranate she ate)and next to the grapes Ophelia eats is a pomegranate. In the special features of the DVD, it says what happened to the Pale Man in a motion comic. He thought the dagger was a weapon which could be used to kill him, which is why he had it locked in his vault. However, it actually the thing keeping him alive and when the door closed and his connection to it severed, the Pale Man died.(Also from the Del Toro exhibit, the Pale Man's mouth is designed off the underside of a manta ray). Fun fact from a native Spanish speaker: When Mercedes half Glasgow's the Captain, when she says you, she says it as "Tu" rather than the honorific "usted"(also you, but said towards people of higher social status and power), giving him an extra insult to his injury. Always loved that. Sadly, this movies timeline takes place in 1944 Spain. Francisco Franco(the former general who the Captain serves, who overthrew the Second Spanish Republic and ruled as Dictator)lived until 1975(after which Spain became a democracy once more), meaning that the rebels cause was a lost one at the time. Del Toro has confirmed the fairy tale elements are all real and that Ophelia did return as princess to the Underworld.

This movie is amazing. I watched it for the first time when i was 14, and it took me 7 years to rewatch it. I'm not sensitive to violence and scary imagery, but the overall feeling the movie left me was so strong(depressing) that it took me that long to wanna watch it again. War movies in general affect me so hard because of the realism, and that's what scares me most. That is true horror, that people are actually capable of doing the most awful things to another being.

Oh my god I started crying at the end cuz I love this movie so much. There's some discourse as to whether the fairy tale stuff was "real" or in Ofelia's head and I almost hold both interpretations.... Basically that ending scene can be seen as a final dying dream, or as her succeeding, so that mixture of bittersweet ambiguity really hits me. Because if you even think cynically none of the fairy tale parts are real, the girl is going out on an ideal dreamy fantasy--horrible circumstances around her death, but she's literally at peace and it's both tragic and beautiful. It's my favorite del Toro movies, maybe one of my favorite movies period.
