Eleanor Audley, the voice of Maleficent and Lady Tremaine (Cindy's stepmother) Fun fact also, Verna Felton voiced Flora and the Fairy Godmother - which is probably why their character designs are similar; the animators tended to model the characters' faces after their performers. XD

@@DCLeadboot Yet Verna Felton has also played the lead elephant in Dumbo, Hathi's wife in The Jungle Book (her last role), Aunt Sarah in Lady and the Tramp and the Queen of Hearts in Alice In Wonderland. Is it just me, or does she often play overbearing women? It can be a good thing, like in The Jungle Book, but a bad thing in most cases. Even the Fairy Godmother kept ignoring Cinderella's pleas about her dress until the last second when she realized her pink dress was torn up, and Flora treats Merryweather like a petulant child all through this movie. However, the Queen of Hearts is a straight up villain, the lead elephant is horrible to this poor baby who happens to have large ears and Aunt Sarah is borderline cruel to poor Lady - it's no wonder she ran away.

I love how distinct the aesthetic is in this film, it's so geometric. Maleficent's color scheme is perfect too, and she's one of my favorite Disney villains. I like how helpful and skilled the good fairies are, which is why it irked me so much that they were so incompetent in the Maleficent films.

I love many other Disney movies more than this one, but I always loved the _art_ and _aesthetic_ of this one more than the rest, and could never quite put my finger on why. Then I watched a documentary here on RU-vid about the making of Sleeping Beauty, and learned that the background art style was derived *directly* from Gothic and Baroque art -- my favorite art eras! The music is also derived directly from the score of the original Sleeping Beauty PLAY, which was written by Pyotr Tchaikovsky -- one of my favorite classical composers, who specialized in very dark and Gothic music. So if you're wondering why the art style for this movie is SO different from all of Disney's other work, it's because it's the one movie they used straight Gothic inspiration for. (the documentary is easy to find here on RU-vid, I'd give it a watch if you're interested!)

Contrary to popular belief, Walt didn’t actually like princesses: He liked their STORIES, but felt Snow White was the definitive classic princess, Cinderella was the contemporary 50’s princess, and by the time he got to Sleeping Beauty, he was more interested in the overall visual style of a medieval tapestry. That’s why some fans complain that Aurora seems like a “generic” character compared to the ones we got in the 90’s Renaissance.

The art style in this film is just gorgeous. It's so unique. The way Maleficent carries herself is so awesomely animated. At ease, always in control. Collected. Disarmingly polite. Until she lets all hell lose on you. There is also no way Prince Phillips horse Samson is not related to Maximus from Tangled. For the darkness... Walt often said you didn't need to pander to kids. They were capable of handling dark stories and situations. He made his films with dark, unambiguously evil villains and showed they could be beaten. Love when people reacting to these old films say x scene reminds them of y new movie. It's usually the other way around. People in modern film making draw inspiration from these older films. Smaug in the Hobbit was inspired by Maleficent's dragon form. Both Guillermo del Torro and Peter Jackson said as much.

Thanks for reacting to this! “Sleeping Beauty” made up most of my childhood and I love the movie so much. No wonder Maleficent got her own two movies because she is that iconic. George Bruns, the composer, moved me with the score in some way that made a huge impact, all my life. Aurora is my favorite Disney princess (besides Belle, for different reasons) and Maleficent is my favorite Disney villain. Not to mention, the art style is just MWAH 🤌🏼 Bellissimo! • Trivia: The music used was influenced by Russian composer, Tchaikovsky from his ballet version of “Sleeping Beauty.” For example: the Disney studios took the waltz of the ballet and added lyrics, which was made into “Once Upon a Dream.” • Do your prefer Aurora in pink or blue? I’m personally team blue ✨💙✨ because I have a thing for blondes in blue, for some reason idk 😂😂

I was so excited when I heard about this reaction yesterday that I had trouble sleeping, and even had a dream of you watching/reacting to this movie because of the passion I have for it (I may need help lol). For Sleeping Beauty is my favorite movie, not Disney movie or animated movie but my favorite movie ever. I love the beauty of this film, how every brick on the wall has so much detail, even down to the leaves. It clearly became "the moving tapestry" it was envisioned to be. Which forced the plot to be more simple so that the animation could be at its best, even the comedy had to be "sophisticated" to uniform with the style. I love that they used the music from the ballet of the same name, and Mary Costa's warm operatic voice as "an extension of speech" for Aurora. Aurora is one of my favorite princesses because she lived as a peasant but even so behaved and moved not just as a princess but a queen, showing that you can choose how people perceive you based on your behavior and not just what you appear to be. In addition she is regal, dignified and the "personification of femininity". I love that they used the character more than in the fairytale and gave her many layers. And Im glad that this film eventually received the financial success it deserved, not that money determines how great the art is but that it rewards its greatness. Lastly Im very happy that you took the time to visit this "treasure". :)

Timeless classic. The Maleficent movies are trash compared to this masterpiece. Fun Fact: Eleanor Audley--one of Walt Disney's favorite voice artists, most memorably as Lady Tremaine in Cinderella (1950)--initially turned the part of Maleficent down, much to Disney's surprise. As it later transpired, Audley was in the midst of battling a bout of tuberculosis and did not want to tax her voice too much. Fortunately, she recovered in time and accepted the part.

Maleficent is probably one of the creepiest Disney villains for me--at least in animation--with her laugh, anger, turning into a dragon, but what especially sends me is when she lured Aurora to prick her finger. The silent stare paired with the music matching the animation and the fairies coming to save her is not only creepy in every way, but also brilliant in every way. Only Nick could make me smile at his reactions to the opening credits of the film! Yup, this is the same Maleficent. She started the trend of villainous characters getting their own movie(like "Cruella")The movie is more from her POV though. I'd suggest it down the line, though the story is way different than this one in terms of the fairies and all(Maleficent is less "mistress of all evil"and became more "person who was screwed over".) Fun fact: Eleanor Audley, who does the voice for Maleficent, also voiced Lady Tremaine(Cinderella's wicked stepmother). You can find black and white images online of parts where they acted out scenes, with her wearing the cloak and horns! The entire final scene, with Maleficent on the tower and the music as she creates obstacles for Philip, up until her death, is still one of the greatest movie scenes of all time for me. If you want to see the scariest male villain in the early Disney era, check out "the Black Cauldron". The Horned King is definitely terrifying.

Of course, but there’s so much in the film to appreciate. The backgrounds are beautiful, and the music is amazing, both from Tchaikovsky and George Burns, I mean, the climax score as Phillip is escaping from Maleficent’s castle and fighting her as a dragon is phenomenal. Speaking of Maleficent, she is, without question, one of THE best Disney villains, top 3 easily. The art of this movie is so beautiful and to me the most original of all Disney movies. The homage to medieval painting art styles with flat perspective and cubic shapes in the vegetation mixed to it 😍 Plus the music is so great, most of it is taken from Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty ballet and reworked a bit to get along with the story. To me the best part that of the movie is when Maleficent guides Aurora in order to fall into her trap and find the spinning wheel falling into her deep sleep. This is scary and fascinating at the sametime, the lighting effects and the music are perfect 👌 AND, what I also love about it is that Aurora isn't the main character. The story is entirely seen from the three fairies's point of view, except for the part in the woods with Aurora and the Prince of course, and it works so well ! I will love this movie forever

This is one of my favorites of all Disney animation, for two main reasons: 1: The look of it. This has some of the most impressive visual styling ever -- angular and medieval and squared-off, unlike any other Disney (the work of the artist Eyvind Earle). 2: The music, which is all (except for the kings' drinking song) derived from Tchaikovsky's "The Sleeping Beauty," one of the greatest and most beautiful of all 19th-century ballets.

Some of the facts about the film and other information: -The artstyle of the film was something Disney had never done before and he wanted the film to have a basically moving tapestry look to it because the last few films where Mary Blair had her look for the films such as Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan watered down when it made it to the lead animators and background artists Walt insisted that wasn’t going to happen on this film so he brought in renowned artist at the Time Eyvind Earle to help keep the look of the film the way he wanted it to be. So this was one of the first times the character animators had to match the style of the background artwork instead of the other way around, -Mary Costa who voiced Aurora was a young opera singer and yes is still alive and is the last of the original three Disney Princess voice actresses as Adriana Casoletti who voiced Snow White lived until the 1990’s, and Ilene Woods who voiced Cinderella lived until around 2005 or so, -the music adaptation from the famous ballet works perfectly here and gives one of the best climaxes ever in not just a Disney film, but in film in genreal and has even been regarded as one of the best sequences ever in a film along with the Chariot Race in Ben-Hur which came out the same year in 1959, -this would be the last fairy tale film the studio made until 1989 with The Little Mermaid as while this film was mildly successful being one of the top money makers of 1959 it just cost more to make than what the box office totals were and Walt would be so disappointed in the number that there would not be a reissue of the film to theaters until after Walt’s death, -on a more interesting note there is reused animation reference from this film more specifically when Aurora and Philip are dancing and their parents are off to the side that would be used for the final scene in 1991 for Beauty and the Beast when Belle and Adam are dancing and you see Lumiere, Cogsworth, and the human version of the featherduster. I put that because she is listed as having three different names across different media:ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uM13nF6JScA.html -this film was nominated for Best Adaption or Score Treatment Oscar, -okay even I have to admit that there should have been more time spent with Aurora and Philip and I came with a rough idea that would go between the scenes of the Fairies taking Aurora into the forest and Maleficent showing her frustration there could be a scene or two of a young version of both of them meeting in the woods and playing together around ages 5 and 8 (this is just a rough estimate) and then again around 10 and 13 and this idea could work with the story as it is because I figure at least it would be unlikely for them to remember the other after only meeting a couple of times and at young ages so when they encounter each other again as the film shows it would be like a faint idea they met before, but to them it would only be like Once Upon a Dream, -speaking of that Once Upon a Dream was the only song that was spared being cut from the final version of the film as an earlier idea of the film had a whole bunch of songs which were cut when the film was reworked, but the people working on the film begged Walt to let it stay in and this film from rough concepts and ideas the finish project started in early 1950’s and took the whole decade being worked on, -the Raven actually has a name even though it is never stated called Diablo, -the sleeping guard the fairies almost run into when they go to rescue Philip is a caracature of one of Disney’s leading artists Marc Davis who was the supervising animator for both Aurora and Maleficent: 31:33 -the whole fighting between Merryweather and Flora over the dress color was actually taken from the animators deciding which color the dress should be, -the final battle sequence was done by Woolie Reitherman who was in World War 2 and did air combat and it would not surprise me if the final scream Maleficent let’s out is a reused scream from Snow White when the queen falls, -when you think about it Maleficent’s plan to keep Philip prisoner for 100 years is diabolical as he will age to an old man all awhile Aurora is in an ageless sleep so when she did let him out and goes to awake her she would not want to be with him, also in the french version of the story the film is based on Aurora did sleep for 100 years and Charles Perrault’s version of the story has six or seven fairies instead of just three, -this is going to be a little confusing, but I’ll do my best to explain when this film was released it was the studio’s first animated film to be fully done in the widescreen process and in multi track stereophonic sound which was recorded in Germany, now here is where it becomes strange when the studio was making the previous animated film Lady and the Tramp it was being made in the regular Full Screen aspect ratio, but around halfway through production this new process came along called Cinemascope created by 20th Century Fox and basically a fancy term for a special widescreen aspect ratio so when Walt heard about this he said for Lady and the Tramp to basically be made twice once as they were already doing and again in this new format, but since all theaters were not ready to show films in that format a lot saw in the regular 4:3 ratio, I brought all of that up because many think Sleeping Beauty was the first animated film to be made in widescreen, but that distinction goes to Lady and the Tramp, With you now having watched Sleeping Beauty. I’m not saying what you can or can’t do, but please heed my warning when I say stay away from the film Maleficent. I consider it one of the worst Disney films and one of the worst films I have ever had the misfortune of being stuck watching. Basically everything you loved about the villain of Maleficent is thrown out and make her a misunderstood character and to make her look better they have the three fairies turned into dumb idiots that always bicker and basically have Maleficent raise the child she cursed because the fairies are too dumb, and the good king Stefan that loved his daughter is instead the villain of the film. The voice of Queen Leah also is voiced by Verna Felton who is also Flora in the film. -Maleficent’s voice luring her in s trance to the spinning wheel is saying “Aurora”, People think that Maleficent’s reason for cursing the child is rather weak, but it makes sense as refusing to send her an invitation is basically the equivalent of ignoring one of high nobility and Maleficent scorn makes sense plus the fact she just loves how evil she is.

I'm glad that you liked the movie, I love Sleeping Beauty as well and the final battle with Prince Philip against Maleficent in her dragon form which is such a cool scene.

You know, people always talk about how Hunchback of Notre Dame is the most underrated Disney movie, and while I sorta agree, I think Sleeping Beauty is even more overlooked. Sure, Aurora could have used more character development, but from an artistic perspective it’s absolutely gorgeous! The art reminds me so much of the scenery in The Last Unicorn. (And Aurora has the best singing voice 💕)

@jf k A subtle princess, you’re right. I always felt Aurora was misunderstood as well. Your comment is pretty insightful about her character qualities!

Maleficent is a good solo story, but it goes on a different path than Sleeping Beauty. As long as you don't focus too much on what you see in this movie, I think you may enjoy it. Idk about the sequel, but I thought the first one was an enjoyable watch.

And it also has another servant that has the title of a lord while being a butler and a musician advisor called Lord Rogers while Sleeping Beauty has a majordomo named Lord Duke (or just the Herald or Duke). Sir Rothbart is kinda like Maleficent but he’s a warlock.

That’s funny that you noticed that she looks similar to the godmother in Cinderella considering the fact that she is also voiced by the same actress and this was the next movie after Cinderella came out in 1950

Maleficent is definitely top 3 Disney villains of all time for sure. Few even come close to how menacing and powerful she is.

It is my opinion that live action Maleficent takes place in an alternate universe and has no relation to this movie. Her personality is just so different from here that it seems unfair to mesh them together. Edit: I vote for the green dress! I love Fauna the most! 😭

I love your earnestness in watching movies, Nick. Thank you for sharing your experiences with us. Me being 33 I still try to be enthusiastic when I see these again for myself. That being said, the background art in this movie looks incredible in the highest resolution. My father pointed that out to me. He's a painter. If it hadnt been for him I wouldnt be into animation and film. Pinocchio was the first Disney film he introduced to me. I was 2 then haha

If I remember correctly, every background is portrait level is what Walt Disney wanted and it's beautiful 🥺

"Now shall you deal with me ol prince, and all the powers of HELL!" There is no doubt that Maleficent is one of the scariest and one of the iconic Disney villains. as soon as she transformed into a Dragon, all bets are off.

The thunder & lightning use to scare me when I was little, it made Maleficent seem even more malevolent & evil!

Charles Perrault lived in the 17th century under Louis XIV, about two centuries before the Grimm brothers… The music is taken from Tchaikovsky’s ballet « La Belle au Bois Dormant » which means « The Beautiful Maid in the Sleeping Forest ». Tchaikovsky’s grand mother was French and had educated him with the stories of her childhood. The ballet is really difficult for the ballerina enters and immediately dances the long and difficult « Adage à la Rose » (Rose Adagio) and has immediately after one of the longest variations (solo) of the classic repertoire. Beautiful music !
