Why do you think The Martins and the Coys was cut and censored?
How would you rank the segments?
The Martins and the Coys
Blue Bayou
All the Cats Join In
Without You
Casey at the Bat
Two Silhouettes
Peter and the Wolf
After You've Gone
Johnnie Fedora and Alice Bluebonnet
Finale: The Whale Who Wanted to Sing at the Met

Mini Disclaimer - Our Make Mine Music movie commentary is not intended as a replacement or substitute for the Disney animated Classic Movie Make Mine Music. Definitely support this film if you can... even if you have to dust out the DVD player to do so... It's definitely worth it :)
Wiki:
Make Mine Music is a 1946 American animated musical anthology film produced by Walt Disney and released by RKO Radio Pictures. It is the eighth Disney feature animated film, released on April 20, 1946.
During World War II, much of Walt Disney's staff was drafted into the army, and those that remained were called upon by the U.S. government to make training and propaganda films. As a result, the studio was littered with unfinished story ideas. In order to keep the feature film division alive during this difficult time, the studio released six package films including this one, made up of various unrelated segments set to music. This is the third package film, following Saludos Amigos and The Three Caballeros. The film was entered into the 1946 Cannes Film Festival.
Plot (IMDB):
In the tradition of FANTASIA, MAKE MINE MUSIC is a glorious collection of musically charged animated shorts featuring such fun-filled favorites as "Peter And The Wolf," narrated by the beloved voice behind Winnie The Pooh. In addition, you'll enjoy such classic cartoon hits as "Casey At The Bat," "The Whale Who Wanted To Sing At The Met," and "Johnnie Fedora And Alice Bluebonnet," the whimsical adventure of two hats who fall in love in a department store window. Every member of your family will have a favorite in this musical medley of fun and fantasy from Disney.

As for hats on horses -- that was a thing early in the 20th century in the cities of the US and Europe, when horse-drawn carriages filled the streets and people thought the hats would keep the horses cooler. Eventually scientists tested and found that hats actually made the horses hotter because they didn't get enough air circulation! -- but by then it hardly mattered because automobiles etc. were replacing horses as city transportation anyway.

Casey at the Bat is actually a famous American poem from 1888 and is taught in most public schools at some point. Casey has reached folklore status similar to Paul Bunyan or Johnny Appleseed despite those two being based on real people (allegedly). Casey’s Corner works as an homage to the short from this film, but is more based on the character himself being an American icon since Main Street, U.S.A. is an optimistic, patriotic representation of an American town center. This is why the statue out front looks nothing like the Casey from the movie. Also - my music teacher in elementary school showed us Peter and the Wolf and until a few years ago, I had no idea it was from a Disney movie!
@EdizAndBen

I always wondered why the Casey on Main Street looked nothing like the character in the movie! Thanks for this!! Now I only know Johnny Appleseed from Melody Time, I don’t think I’ve heard of Paul Bunyan… unless he’s in an under appreciated Disney movie I don’t know about 😅

Disney's "Paul Bunyan" is a self-contained short animated film from 1958. Like many others, it has been repackaged and reissued in many ways over the years. I have it in a "Vault" DVD collection of all the Disney animated shorts that were neither Donald/Mickey/Pluto/etc. nor a Silly Symphony. And while everything @berjo516 said about "Casey at the Bat" is right, in this movie we get only an abbreviated adapted version of the poem, surrounded by this new "Casey, the Pride of Them All" song.

I loved you guys commenting on all the segments of "Make Mine Music." I first saw this anthology in its first release. (Yeah, I'm 81.) I was bored with the monochrome ballads, and still am. The animation for "Claire de Lune" has been re-combined with that music. "Blue Bayou" was always a real snoozer. There are several efforts on RU-vid that compare the two versions. But they were experimenting on some new techniques. The tracing of frames of filmed action, as in "Two Silhouettes, was and is called rotoscoping. Ralph Bakshi later used it in his 1976 version of "The Lord of the Rings." My faves of this group are still "All the Cats" and "Peter and the Wolf." Did you catch that Prokofiev had written that "on spec," hoping Disney would embrace it. He was one of a great number of artists and musicians who fled Europe to the US in a great brain-drain prompted by WWII. Dali and Stravinsky were also among that number. Keep up your good work. I've been waiting for you guys to get to Make Mine Music! Your reactions did not disappoint, and my hopes that you would rate the 10 segments was not only met, it was surpassed -- you each did one! Oh joy! Ben's fun facts were as accurate and informative as always, too. I own a videotape of the movie, bought decades ago when it was available complete. I suppose The Martins and the Coys makes them so fearful of being attacked for promoting violence (either guns or domestic) that they don't even want to test its reception. I think audiences should be allowed to think for themselves, but that's becoming an increasingly unpopular concept. As a (classical) music professor, I always want to like Peter and the Wolf more than I do; I think the animation and the narration dumbed it down too much and made it too cutesy. But the jazzy ones still hold up, and there's a certain kind of fun and fascination just discovering what was thought entertaining in another era. Thanks again!

"Casey at the Bat" is definitely one segment of this package film that didn't entirely deliver in terms of a good pay-off. There's actually a sequel to this part made as an individual animated short from 1954 ("Casey Bats Again") that manages to provide a proper epilogue to this story and give Casey a better outcome as he learns to be a proper father and come to terms with the string of bad luck that seems to follow him... somewhat.

I don't think there's any grand reason for Make Mine Music to not be on Disney+. Just simple laziness on the companies part. They'd need to search their vault for the full unedited copy of the film which probly won't get many streaming views. D+ is still missing several well liked but low key movies and shows. No Aladdin, Tarzan, or Buzz Lightyear show. No Herbie movie with the evil Herbie car. No IMAX cut of Tron Legacy. While the Simpsons managed to get it's proper aspect ratio fixed due to fan backlash, other shows/movies just won't get the same level of attention..

Is this movie actually banned? I just think it's a forgotten movie that never got any traction over the years. Now Song of the South, THAT one is banned.. I hope you guys cover that movie. I'd like to see your reactions to that. Now, if I were to give Make Mine Music a reason to be banned, my guess is because the whale is singing the "Short'nin' Bread" song, which is apparently racist? Though I've heard that song my whole life in so many past movies, cartoons and TV shows. Again, I think it's just a forgotten movie that Disney has no desire to put on Disney+.

Prokofiev was also one of the first major movie composers of his time (prior to him, there was Gottfried Huppertz who worked with Fritz Lang on "Metropolis"). He (Sergei) worked with renowned film theorist and filmmaker Eisenstein on two movies with sound: "Alexander Nevsky" (1938) and "Ivan the Terrible" (1944-1946). These two movies's scores were influenced by 1920s-30s Hollywood movies, but also with deep Russian/Soviet folklore and traditional music, both sacred and secular.

The Martins and The Coys is based on the real family feud in Appalachia between the Hatfields and McCoys. There was a very good mini series made about them not too long ago. Definitely recommend. "The Hatfield-McCoy Feud involved two American families of the West Virginia-Kentucky area along the Tug Fork of the Big Sandy River from 1863 to 1891. The Hatfields of West Virginia were led by William Anderson "Devil Anse" Hatfield, while the McCoys of Kentucky were under the leadership of Randolph "Ole Ran'l" McCoy."

The reason it's not on Disney+ is almost definitely because all the various drama surrounding the unavailability of an uncut version in America, probably involving them not wanting to put the uncut version on a streaming service for Americans, but not wanting to put a cut version there either because the movie has always been available uncut everywhere else. As for the reason the Martins and Coys segment is "banned" in America, it's almost definitely because of the gun violence. Had it been because it was "offensive" to southerners they'd have banned a lot of other stuff as well, and had it been because of the domestic violence they'd have banned it other places. Gun violence is really the only good explanation for why America wouldn't want it but nobody else really cares. As for the segments, Johnny Fedora is my favorite - super catchy song and the story really does hit you in the heart. Peter and the Wolf is a good concept but the presentation here isn't great, with way too much talking over the music. Prokofiev intended for the narration to go between the music segments, not on top of them, overpowering them. You can find uploads of other performances on RU-vid that match the original intent. The Martins and the Coys is a good and fun song, but this is an annoyingly bad performance of it with way too many wacky and gimmicky ways to sing the various verses. The barn dance segment drags too, and has nothing to do with anything. Casey at the Bat is great, I think the unfamiliarity with the poem and the subject matter in general just made you fail to get it :\ After You've Gone keeps getting cited as a highlight of the movie, but I never got it. It's just boring. Maybe I fail to get it:P Without You is my favorite of the interludes by far; great song, great singer and very appealing animation with the rainy window. It'd be in my top 3 alongside Casey and Johnny.

I stumble upon this just now, so sorry bout that. I heard that the reason why many broadcasters from about the 1910s up until the 1950s sound like that is because of the limited technology of the era. On top of the fact that most early studios were in New York where there was a noticeable presence of Italian immigrants who left their mark on the medium, broadcasters back then also had to train themselves to emphasize the vowels in a distinctive fashion on their audio transmissions as the qualify transmissions for radio receptors and early TV sets wasn't the best to say the least. Radio broadcasts would often suffer the effects of static interference from electromagnetic imbalances on nearby power lines or what have you and in the case of early TV sets they consumed A LOT of energy and were quite delicate so the highest audio volume was pretty low on top this. Early video transmissions for the PHILCO TV sets of the 1920s even had people doing hand gestures as the image was of such poor quality that people was often required to use their entire body to convey the message, luckily this didn't last much as I cannot even fathom how hilarious it would be if every broadcaster had to spastically move about like Sportacus in Lazy Town.

In the late 80s to 90s Disney had a Disney Music TV where they set old animated segment to modern music at the time, and "All the Cats join In" was set to the "Rock this Town" by the Stray Catsru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_ZkoH5Ar5vU.html&feature=share. No wonder its so hard to find. I never knew it was from this, thanks for sharing. Also, they showed Casey at Bat as a separate segment, didn't know it was a part of this too.

I watched this on RU-vid back in 2012, and the only segments that have stayed with me are "Blue Bayou" (which, without the Fantasia trivia, probably wouldn't have, even though the animation is some of Disney's best), "Peter and the Wolf," "Johnnie Fedora and Alice Bluebonnett" and "The Whale Who Wanted to Sing at the Met" (which is probably my favorite of all of them. The post-Fantasia package films all have a tendency to blend together, but I think this is pleasant enough for what it is. It's good in spots, and even the worst segments don't seem particularly awful.

Seeing your video on this film that I haven’t watched in years made me realize a lot of the segments aren’t as good as I remember. The ones I do like are: Whale Who Wanted to Sing at the Met, All the Cats Join In, After You’ve Gone, And Peter and the Wolf, So is the next film from 1946 where the main good thing is the animated segments (Song of the South) or the film from 1947 where the second segment is far superior to the first (Fun and Fancy Free)?

I don't know why, but even though they kill each other, they give off a certain air of innocence and simplicity, almost like a family fight......but they actually kill each other. And in the end, of course there is disagreement, but him being a man makes it easier (he literally met her punch with his strong chin) but he must also want to impose himself despite that. For them, conflict is the spice of humor and love? The ending is not pessimistic, almost Romeo in Juliet, but instead of the young people dying, the adults die.

I know I'm coming in late here, but I'm not seeing it in at least the first few comments, so putting it here just in case. The song "Shortnin' Bread" has very awkward connotations, being a 1) plantation song and 2) a Black and White Minstrel song. While Willie the Whale's version sounds fairly normal, in many versions of the song the heavily stereotyped African American accent is very evident and overused. So, yes, not a song that ought to be really sung today and particularly awkward in a Disney movie. While its use doesn't make this Willie the Whale Make Mine Music animation racist (at least in my opinion), it was definitely more appropriate in the '40's (though still pretty darn racist to be perfectly honest).

Disney Plus has no more content :( I remember being excited to see some of the old donald, goofy and mickey cartoons between 30s-60s, and possibly even some repackaged programs like Donald Duck Presents and Good Morning MIckey, or carousel of colors or the wonderful world of disney (mouserpiece theater even). nope... none of that.. not a single episode. they used to have a handful of the old mickey cartoons, like donald's dog laundry or mickey and the seal, but they have since removed a lot of these programs. what the heck is the point of disney plus anymore??? heck, they didn't even bother to put the wuzzles because of some "fat jokes" that rhinokey and hoppo did. then there's dumbo's circus... it was purported that disney had lost the original reels to this show, and it was believed to be true for the longest time. nope... disney have now claimed they do indeed retain the original reels for this show AND HAVE NO INTEREST IN REMASTERING AND RELEASING THEM BECAUSE OF LACK OF INTEREST! Disney is for the pits, I say we sue them out of existence, take the rights to their IP and redistribute it to the masses. Time for real change.
