At the time True Blood came out, Twilight was huge, Vampire Diaries was on TV and vampires were firmly in the teen melodrama genre. With this show (airing on HBO) they wanted to put the sex back in vampires and reclaim the genre for adults again.

Sookie is 25 and still a virgin because she can read minds and so far everyone she has dated was weird in his head, so she needs someone that she can't read. The series is really good and starts out being BETTER than the books, but ends up just weird and strays off the plot entirely, which is a shame because some really fun things happen later in the series.

For me, it was just the last half of the last season. WTF was that?? They were wayyyyyy too attached to Bill and kept him around far longer than he deserved to be. I'm rarely one to go "but in the books", but in this case the books *were* downright better on that subject. In the books, when Sookie left Bill and then started seeing Eric, Bill had the decency to stay gone for the most part. Not TV Bill. TV Bill decided to go stalker.

The accent René is doing in the first episode is Cajun. It's kind of like a mix of southern and French. The actor does an okay job of portraying it, but a lot of the other southern accents are way over the top. I live about an hour from where the fictional town of Bon Temps would be located. Nobody talks like that. 🤣

Vampirism has always been a metaphor for marginalization, but the show (and books) directly link it with being queer. Coming out of the "closet" becomes "coffin", a blood borne illness targets the community and their sexual partners (Hep-V in the show, Sino-AIDS in the books), they have similar civil rights issues, etc. Plus, vampires are naturally very fluid sexuality and gender-wise by nature. Once you reach a certain age, you could give fuck all about labels or the petty ways humans see you. Season 2 is widely acknowledged as the best season. Season 4 is my personal favorite, even if Jason goes through some truly horrendous things in it. There's at least one character who experiences horrific trauma each season. I'm not a huge fan of the last few seasons of the show, but they are better than the books. In fact, the final novel is so unforgivably bad, I had a conspiracy theory for a while that Charlaine Harris wrote us an ending that we all would hate so much that we wouldn't want her to continue the series. That way, she could move on to something else. There are 14 books and 3 novellas in the series, so it's hardly surprising she'd want to move on to something new.

True Blood changed the shape of television. It was the first huge show of its kind, it defined HBO's new direction of highly produced tv with shorter season arcs, and is a huge part of the reason television looks the way it does today. I never really liked the final episode, I think Bill should have found a way to allow himself to pass on without making Sookie do it. But I was glad she chose to keep her light. But the main thing I don't like is Jessica and Hoyt. They're a couple for a while in earlier seasons, they just got back together here before this episode. And I don't like Hoyt at all, I think he's a small town "nice guy" and Jess is better off with no one (or with Jason). Instead of the random Sookie lookalike that just showed up a few episodes ago, lol.

This show had a lot of potential and, for me, never completely met that potential. It wasn't afraid to get into hard conversations, but didn't always know how to complete the conversations it started. And while some characters, like Jason, got interesting arcs, others, like Tara (who was also my favorite) never were able to shine the way they shoud have. They did also introduce a few too many kinds of supernatural creatures in my mind (though I understand this was an issue with the books as well, and is kind of hard to get away from in this genre.) However, I did used to watch it with friends as it was coming out, so it has a special place in my heart, and I respect them for never being afraid to try new plotlines.

Here we go! I really enjoyed True Blood. Instead of a standard teen drama, it's a more adult and serious supernatural series, with excellent characters throughout, a rocking intro song that gets stuck in my head for weeks, and its own unique take on vampire lore. Also, having vampires of all different ages who are prominent characters is interesting. It is definitely high on the sex-o-meter, though, LOL. I love the first/middle/last intro to shows. It's fun and different from other reactors. Tara is a gem.

I think it speaks highly of a show that you can really so invested on a character's arc just by watching bits of their story. You know this show actually gets the deep south pretty accurate, when you go mixing in vampires and Jesus it's a hoot to watch edit: The weird accent is Acadian, aka Cajun. These people speak French that's a different dialect than France or Quebec. His people being from Acadia up in Canada, left out of that area and ended up down in Louisiana. Some fascinating history if you get curious to look it up.

In the first season Sookie is 25, just still rather inexperienced because the whole mind reading thing has made it difficult for her to actually interact with guys and it not go to shit. Ergo how she ends up with vampires/supernatural figures who are harder to read. This show plays with a lot of American South tropes, which is usually underrepresented in vampire media. Rene in the first season is going for a creole accent, which is a combined kind of French/southern/Haitian thing pretty central to Louisiana/New Orleans area. The whole SA thing with Jason in the 4th season, is a....weird inbreeding were pantger plotline. And Eric is normally a very older, dominant viking vampire and then he got his memory erased and turned into a sweet little puppy dog really 😂 By the last season he is back up 'himself. And the meaning behind Bill saying her killing him would mean she could be done with vampires - is that vampires are very attracted to fairies. Drinking their blood can lead to them feeling stronger being able to be walk in daylight for short amounts of time. And it's where her mind reading power comes from. So he thinks if she gives up the last of her fae power, she'll be human and not get dragged into as much supernatural chaos.

They had the right message in theory but in practice they really treated their black characters horribly compared to their white counterparts

From what I remember (having watched this all a while ago), the show had pulled Sookie and Bill apart with so much betrayal etc. that in context it felt forced to bring them back together with such love and trust here, but watched like this it really works! You’re also kind of interestingly in Hoyt’s shoes regarding his romance with Jessica - as far as he remembers, they’ve just met and had an immediate connection, but then she explains to him that they actually had a very intense romantic relationship that he had erased from his memory. I was eagerly awaiting your response to Bill’s goopy death - it’s how all vampires die in the show, and I remember being glad that they didn’t back down from it in this instance, but yeah, if you are not expecting it!! The last couple of seasons imo were disappointing. Bill was born near the civil war that’s how old he is. Sookies gran died in season 1. I kinda go back and forth on the acceptance/integration/racial/gay/etc metaphor as presented in this show (and vampire stories in general). I get what it's going for, and it *does* do some interesting exploration. On the other hand, real world minorities aren't superpowered life-draining casual murderers who can rip your family in half and hypnotize you into thinking you did it. The anti-vampire humans in this universe aren't exactly wrong; even the well-intentioned vamps in this show lose control over themselves and kill people pretty frequently. I mean, cool, got it, thank you for exploring this idea Alan Ball, but my societal "othering" isn't exaaaaaaactly because I'm a literal Halloween monster constantly sitting inches from exploding the people around me into gore, y'know?

Interestingly enough, Eric is the second oldest vampire in the show, second only to his own sire, Godric. Eric was a Viking, and in that one scene you were looking at, I believe he was speaking Norwegian, or at least he used the Norwegian word for "crocodile". He's over 1,000 years old. (On a side note, his sire, Godric, was a Gaul from the time when Caesar invaded the area and claimed Gaul for the Roman empire.)

Like I hate spoilers and will shut down conversations if they enter spoiler territory for things I’m interested in. But if I never plan on watching or reading something, I will tell people to spoil away, and would happily sit down and watch a final episode under those circumstances. Also, whilst rare, spoilers have occasionally encouraged me to try things I had otherwise planned to ignore. Tyler did the beginning, middle and end of Buffy, got a sackful of spoilers, and that doesn’t seem to have ruined his enjoyment now that he’s watching the full season. And his commentary shows how little he knows about what’s coming, because the spoilers were incomplete and out of context.

Everyone is different though of course 💜

I enjoy Dylans content, but..the fact that this is a trend now is infuriating to me. I don't want to sit here frustrated over everything you missed asking questions, I want you to commit to what you are watching and deliver the pay off, because you will enjoy the ride so much more KNOWING what everyone's motivations and stories are. I was exited for the beginning of the episode and unsatisfied by where the half way led. Are we that lazy to not just watch content someone else created without being lazy fucks. I say this in caring frustration.

Are you calling me lazy? My content is analysing. I've often made hour videos on single episodes and cover multiple shows all the way through at a time. I'm currently covering three shows episode by episode. This video took me weeks to make, but because I didn't have time to commit to a FOURTH show of several seasons I'm lazy? Sorry but coming onto someone else's comment section talking about another creator and branding me as a 'lazy fuck' isn't 'caring frustration'. If you're going to make this kind of comment maybe do the barest bit of research into the creator you decide to offload it to. I'm familiar with Dylan's content. I like him. While we do reaction content we do not make the same videos. If you don't want to sit there frustrated because you don't like the format why are you clicking on a first, middle, last? At a certain point that's on you.

Sure. I can't believe this is how you met Eric and Pam for the first time. AllI was saying, was that you, the way you are and what you do, took something away from us who enjoyed this show, I mean I never willingly want to see Jason shirtless ever again, but just skipping like that... don't shit on me about how many shows you are doing and what not, then don't do it if you can't commit or you don't have the time or it isn't a priority. That's all, I very much enjoyed Hil house, that us how I found you and after that the good place. You are maybe right in some ways but it doesn't make me wrong all the same.
