Yup. That scene's the reason I can't watch _The Iron Giant_ with anyone else. I have a reputation to maintain as one of those men who'd just grunt in annoyance if you shot him, and that scene makes me cry every time. Even knowing the robot's going to be fine, it's one of those scenes that knows how to punch straight into your chest and say "well, you won't be needing *this* anymore" as it rips your heart out and stomps on it. (The other one at the top of that list, the Timex scene in _The Fly II._ Jesus Christ, what a gut-wrenching scene. If Hell doesn't exist, God should invent it just to conjure up the people from that movie into real life so he can throw the scientists responsible for Timex into Hell and let them burn for all eternity.)

When he calls himself superman I cry everytime! Poor Iron Giant lost him memory in the accident, hence the dent in his head. Once Hogarth “dies” and triggers his red eye attack mode, I love that they animated the dent in his head fixing, demonstrating that he is back to his original destructive form. But Hogarth return even manages to break through that destructive exterior 🥺 definitely one of the best animated films, even with the infuriating villains!

@@vodkapigeon.4682 The ending scene doesn’t ruin the movie at all. In fact, it’s completely consistent with Hogarth’s statement to Iron Giant that he is good, and that means he has a soul, and that a soul never dies. What matters was that the Iron Giant choose not to be a weapon but instead to be a hero (i.e. “good”) like Superman, and therefore chose to do good and save the people he loved knowing that if he is a hero (i.e. good) his soul will never die. The ending scene is actually confirming for the audience that in fact “good” souls like the Iron Giant never die. Ending with the Iron Giant in fact being dead and gone forever would’ve actually contradicted the point of the movie. So…….

You should watch "The Iron Giant: Signature Edition." Signature edition is another word for director's cut. They add something that is not from origin of this movie. There are three scenes they add: (1) Dean and Annie are talking at the diner until Earl Stutz came to see Dean about the tractor, (2) the Giant's hand was watching the television about Tomorrowland, and (3) Giant had a nightmare about his past and what was his purpose.

There is a deleted scene where the Giant was dreaming. His dreams were somehow connected to Dean's TV, and Dean saw that the Giant was desgined to destroy worlds. That was the reason why Dean was so mean to the Giant when he almost killed Hogarth. I guess they deleted it because it was unnecessary, and that almost killing a boy should be enough reason to get upset. Plus it kinda gives too much away about the Giant's origins. Which in my opinion, i prefer it to be a mystery. I like not knowing where he came from, or what he was meant to do. Because the point of the movie is it doesn't matter where you came from. "You are who you choose to be".

@MissFlow

ah yes, the dream shows there are even more of him! To conquor/destroy planets, and this giant was sent to Earth to destroy. However the impact of his landing apparently resulted in the bump on his head and his amnesia. It would have been not too spoon feeding for me if they kept the scene in the final cut, because even with the dream sequence we still don't know a whole lot about the giant. Who made him? Where did he come from. All questions that indeed need no answer. All that scene explained is the giant's purpose, which we could tell already when he goes into is destructive mode later in the movie. This is clearly a machine meant to kill, but he went against his original purpose and chose to do the opposite:)

As I've grown up, the way the giant reacts every time he goes into gun mode is really moving to me. He's scared of his own defense mechanism. It just feels so real. When we're frightened and on the defensive, we can do things that would scare our "normal" selves. Great reaction. I cannot express how happy I am that you reacted to this movie. I'm glad you enjoyed it!

This is one of those rare movies where every single scene is relevant and every plot twist is beautifully forecast, from the Giant remembering Hogarth's words, to showing how it learns by mimicking him, to it think he's dead when he's just unconscious. Every single scene is necessary, and everything follows logically. I also love how Mansley goes from being mildly sympathetic at first to being one of the most hateable villains in all of animation, and yet it's a perfectly plausible descent. Truly one of the best-crafted movies of all time.

Fun facts: The most difficult challenge in making The Iron Giant is figuring out how to show off the Giant’s powers without killing anyone. Brad Bird (the director) would later on be the director of Pixar’s The Incredibles
@jamesmoyner7499
@jamesmoyner7499 3 года назад
The Iron Giant was Brad Bird’s first film and he had started out at Disney trained with the new generation of animators under the original group that worked with Walt which is why in both this film and The Incredibles he had Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston voice themselves as cameos. In this film they are the train guys who say they saw A Giant Metal Man, This film was not advertised really at all by Warner Brothers so it was a box office disappointment and only in the last 10 or so years has it gained a cult following also there is actually an extended cut which has a couple of additional scenes one in which shows The Giant’s mind being on the television in Dean’s place and his original mission which would have explained why he freaked out as badly the next day,

Why did Kent lie? Why did he do anything he did this movie? Paranoia; seeing threats everywhere, ignoring reality, and all that stuff. It's the definition of how to do a smart children's film that children can grow up with, and look back on all the commentary, setting, and subtext you didn't notice as a kid. This film still holds up and I'm glad that it's becoming more and more popular. 😎

Agreed, the "Duck and Cover" scene was played for laughs. However, the sad part is that everyone these days thinks that was just nonsense to keep people from panicking. No one knows that up to 90% of the deaths from an atomic explosion are preventable. For those who don't want to read a long annoying comment know that, 'Duck and Cover' and 'Shelter in Place' aren't there to keep people from panicking, they were conceived of by engineers who dedicated years studying Nuclear Science and Low Altitude Blast Physics to maximize casualties to the enemy and minimize casualties on our end. Duck and Cover isn't there to protect people from surviving a bomb going off directly over your head, but it can protect you from the 2.8 second 300 mph wind the bomb would cause which would blast through any glass windows and blenderize anyone standing behind them. One of the big things about Nuclear explosions is that they're on such a massive scale, there is a tremendous time delay between the flash and the shockwave. Far out at 8+ miles, you've got up to 20 seconds between the flash and the boom. (What an A-bomb actually sounds like-ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-szBRTPaoCM4.html&ab_channel=venera13) Normal people, not recognizing the bright flash in the sky (brighter than the sun), would (of course) rush to the nearest window to look for what caused it. Unless they live on a mountain high enough to see the approaching blast wave traveling at 343 m/s the next thing they're going to witness is a face-full of glass. Get down, preferably under something sturdy (to reduce body surface area), cover your eyes and ears (to protect sight from flying glass and hearing from the approaching deafening blast) and wait till the blast wave has passed. "Duck and Cover can't protect you?" Tell that to Yulia Karbashiva, a 4th grade teacher in Chelyabinsk Russia who told her 44 students to duck and cover when a meteor exploded in the sky on February 15, 2013. None of the children were injured, the only one who suffered lacerations was the teacher (who was standing up). After that, anyone surviving the blast would most likely panic, jump into their car, try to escape the location and get caught up in a traffic jam of thousands of people all trying to do the same... right in the middle of the descending fallout. Because some of the fallout would have such a short half-life (Shorter the half-life, the more powerful the radiation. The hotter it burns, the faster it burns out) it would be incredibly dangerous to be outside. However, because it has such a short half-life, the radiation levels will drop significantly in a relatively short time. 1 hour after the blast the fallout should peak, and radiation levels could be around 1000 R/hr. However, at 2 hours, 480 R/hr. 100 R/hr at 7 hours and only 10 R/hr after 48 hours. Most of the radiation coming off of the fallout would be alpha and beta particles with some gamma rays. Alpha particles can be blocked by as little as a sheet of paper. Beta particles are harder to stop but can still be blocked by as little as some tinfoil. Gammas are the problem, but even these can be attenuated enough to cause little to no harm. Close vents to the outside (don't want to breath toxic/radioactive fallout), get to the center/basement of your house, and put as much mass "stuff" between you and the outside as you can and hunker down for 2-3 days. After that you won't get a fatal dose just by walking outside. (For more information check out the presentation-ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WprJQ7WYdJY.html&ab_channel=AtlasSurvivalShelters)

This was one of my favorite movies as a kid. Comedy, action, drama, it had everything a great movie needed. And yeah, Mansley was a jerk. His pride meant more to him than anything, and nearly got a town wiped off the map. But when the Giant roared before blasting that tank, that's one of my favorite rage screams I've ever heard. I don't know what Vin Diesel channeled to sound *that* furious, but he really sold the pain and fury. Not a word spoken, but I could feel the sense of "YOU WANT ME TO BE THE BAD GUY?! FINE! I'M THE BAD GUY NOW!" vibes.

Little fun fact, this are the same character designs as Disney's The Incredibles, Brad Bird was still in love with 2D animation, but when Disney saw the box Office for this movie, they forced him to go full 3D, and he after all those years of experience, had to learn everything from scratch, he still wanted to live to his expectations

There is two extra scenes added in the film when It came out on theaters in his 15 anniversary, which you can find in the extended version or on youtube: - one is a scene with Dean and Hogarth's mom at the dinner, which leads to the scene of him talking to the old man. - the other scene is after the "Souls don't die" scene, which is about the Giant having a dream and been transmited into Dean's tv, which explain why Dean starts having about the Giant all of the sudden. I recomend watching those scenes, since it explains a little some stuff in the film.

The Harry Connick Jr character (Dean?) is a Beatnik - they were a subculture that arose in the late 40's, early 50's, and were known for being into art, poetry, jazz and, ahem, the happy kind of smokeables. They were also into politics, often left-leaning, and many of the major beat poets were involved in shaping the peace movements of the 60's. There's been several movies about the beat generation, people like Jack Kerouac among many others. Edit: Also, the reason Vin Diesel got the role of Groot in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies is because of his performance in this. He is a *much* better actor than most people give him credit for.

Fun Fact: In the director's commentary, several of the production cast discussed on how the Giant will give a good first impression on the townspeople within a short span of a minute or two. Which then they figured him saving a couple of kids would be the best introduction into warming up to them. The voices of those kids? Brad Bird's sons, apparently.

Such an underrated masterpiece! It was the directorial debut of Brad Bird, who went to direct animated films like Ratatouille and The Indestructibles, but also Mission:Impossible Ghost Protocol... Vin Diesel was The Giant's voice and that's why he later voiced Groot. The director said that its initial concept was "what if a weapon had a soul ?" Actually, on the extended cut, there's a dream sequence from the giant, explaining that he ACTUALLY is an Invasion weapon originally.
