Agreed. This is definitly one of the strongest women in fiction. Knowing the risks she faces an owl and a cat, that's like facing a tiger and a dragon for a normal human. Unarmed, no armor, no nothing.

That's my favorite thing about this movie. An ordinary mom is the hero, not because she has any innate special qualities -- in fact, she's textually less intelligent and more fearful than almost all the other characters -- but because she is a mom who is going to fight for her kids no matter what. It's extraordinary.

People think beig a hero is being physically strongs and all that jazz but it's about strength of heart and willinglings to go the mile against all odds plus she's a dedicated mother too

Yes, absolutely. As pointed out by others, she is just a regular mouse and her husband was gifted with great intelligence. She's in a strange, fascinating, terrifying world but she's driven by the desire to protect her children and she's both brave and tenacious. Mrs. Brisby is a wonderful character

The sequel was a huge contradiction to the first movie since it claimed Timmy was the chosen one xP

And then proceeded to take that WAYYY too creepily and neurotically over the edge throughout the 80's. (Qv. "Land Before Time".)

@@aarroncannon1590 No, The Day TV Cartoons Died wouldn't be until three years later in 1985, when animators suddenly decided their industry was to celebrate their fourth-grade childhoods that led them to take up the profession, make sniggering, immature cartoons for other animators, and complain about how badly Hanna-Barbera toons looked as a kid. While over at Disney, they were making The Great Mouse Detective. :)

I cant say i entirely disagree with that, alot of movies i enjoyed most as a kid and remembered were darker. Nimh, The Last Unicorn, Coraline, to name a few.

Don bluth was a great Artist he drawn all this himself

@@jasminkrieger8464 Don was an amazing artist and a creative powerhouse, be he absolutely did not do all the art for this movie by himself. He certainly did work on it, but so did his 2 producers (Gary Goldman and John Pomeroy), as well as 8 other people who came with those three from Disney.

This movie is what made me fall in love with animation in general

@@captin3149 oh, good one. It is really a US thing, I can see this happening while living pretty far from there. And does it make sense to you? I am glad I was not treated as a kid if I had some lack of intelligence. Like most kids are today watching Peppa or Dora for example.

@@alissonlares2926 I mean, I sorta see where they're coming from in wanting to protect kids, but in my own opinion, sheltering them from everything actually hurts them, and in some cases I feel makes them incapable of functioning well as adults, but then they become adults with that mindset, and drag us all even further down. The view from a sinking ship is a poignant one....

All Dogs go to Heaven is another dark one, but strangely memorable and likable.

He was a staple in my childhood because of the voices he did. What a fantastic actor. R.I.P Dom DeLuise.

I highly recommend Watership Down, but that one is dark as well, just a word of warning.

The book was based off a soldier's WW2 memories.

That poor young girl.

It's really hard to watch now, knowing the abuse and trauma Judith was going through while she was recording for that movie. Her breakdowns were such that the adults in the studio and her agent were alerting the police. it was sad that her mother didn't have the courage for the sake of her daughter.

Eh, people say this but kids movies these days have touched on stuff I've never seen when I was a kid in the late 80's. Stuff that had me chilled and going "Crap, this is supposed to be for kids." Maybe as an adult things are different and you're wiser about the world. Movies I watched as a kid, like this one, never scared me or had me feeling dread or emotional. More than likely because we just are not mentally developed in that area yet, who knows. I watched my old favorite movies as an adult and wince at some of the absolute horrors that blew right through me when I was kid. And yeah, there are totally movies out there that are just soft fluff but we had them too in the 80's. I just think that they are not expressing darker themes the same way like they used to. And plus, what was a dark topic to us in the 80's is not necessarily a dark topic to kids 40 years later.

Eh not really. More like every animated movie back then had a G rating slapped on it without the raters fully checking what it's about.

"We're Back" wasn't Bluth, it's a Spielberg movie. (Also I'd argue he did a lot of wrong with Troll in Central Park, but I like his highs enough that I'm happy to overlook the lows. XD)

I don't know which is more tragic of an 00's childhood-- Thinking that Howl's was a GOOD Studio Ghibli movie (just for being the second anime to see in a theater after Spirited Away), or the impression that Spirit and Atlantis were good, period. Oh, the lost post-90's, pre-Tangled/Ralph generation... :(

don’t be a hater. in my opinion, Howl is a good movie, and Atlantis remains one of the greatest Disney films of all time. why waste your energy being negative to people who are enjoying something?

In the book, and this is heartbreaking, when the Rats left the rosebush to escape the exterminators, they knew that if there were no dead rats in the warren the exterminators would know something was up... after all, rats sleeping in their den during the day, surely some of them would die before they had a chance to try and escape the poison. If none died, that means the rats were aware of what was going to happen and evacuated appropriately. Which is not a thing normal rats would be capable of. And any rumor of unusually smart rats may cause NIMH to catch wind of their trail at last. So a dozen of the rats volunteered to stay behind and sacrifice their lives to save the colony. As the exterminators dug up the warren and pulled out the dead rats they found, Mrs. Frisby could see one of them was unusually large... Brutus, brave loyal Brutus, the guardian of the front gate, and another could well have been kindly Justin, there was a resemblance, but Mrs Frisby was too teared up to look any closer and honestly didn't want to know if it was Justin or not.

@@GuukanKitsune I remember when I read the book thinking the same thing, that one of the rats COULD have been Justin, and I swear I lost sleep over that! But there were sequel novels, and in them it's revealed that Justin survived.

i agree with all you said.. and i think it's part of the unfortunate new generation where "cartoons" are made to be makeshift babysitters. not to be watched with parents as most of us did to understand how potent and magical don bluth movies were. I hate everytime i hear a reactor mention one of these movies as 'dark' or 'not for kids'.. which, yes, not for this generations kids who need everything to be PC clean and safe, but i watched it as a very young child and adored it b/c it was a family event viewing.. and even if i was still too young to understand the complexities of NIMH (as in, medical testing mice), i was still afforded the unique parallel wonder that my parents felt in their own way, while i felt the same from a childs perspective. and now as an adult, i've become the parent able to understand that even deeper layer my parents had. ❤

Yeah, it's pretty rare that anyone one-ups the book, but they pulled out all the stops on NIMH. One of my favorite movies ever.
