In the sequel HANNIBAL (2001), we receive another course in the history of diembowlment, and its place in society. Or at least for one certain Italian family. We also are reminded that, at some of the finest restaurants, chefs may appear table-size and prepare the most select dishes for diners. Once I get past the replacement of Jodie Foster with Julianne Moore (which I noticed at first but quickly skipped forward), we have an engrossing tale. Another caution - if you catch "Gary Oldham" in the opening credits, good - becuase that's the only time I recognized him - his name printed. The introduction of the Hannibal tales is - as other commenters mention - 1986's most excellent MANHUNTER with a powerful William Petersen playing the central retired FBI agent tracking another of Dr. Lecktor's serial-killer clients played powerfully by Tom Noonan. In 2002, recognizing the aging process was soon to overtake Anthony Hopkins, MANHUNTER was remade as RED DRAGON. This is a good-enough remake but I'd recommend seeing MANHUNTER first because the weakness of the remake is in casting alone: it's the physical presence and 'power' of Tom Noonan & William Petersen vs. little Ralph Fiennes & milquetoast Edward Norton. They do adequate jobs but the power of the original two actors drove the interest in the series.
Manhunter was the original of the book series to be adapted of Hannibal Lector with Brian Cox as the cannibal Hannibal. Silence of the Lambs is technically a sequel or even an unintentional reboot 🤷♂️. Red Dragon is a remake of Manhunter but with Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal (Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal). The sequel to Silence of the Lambs and Manhunter/Red Dragon is Hannibal which, sadly, Jodie Foster didn’t return as Clarice Starling but with Julianne Moore.

I see it's making Summer film festival rounds, too, in 2024. Like most every film, no matter how many times audiences watch home-video versions, the Big Screen and Jammed Theaters add vast dimension that leaves audiences saying things like, "It's like I've never seen this movie before!"
