@woodbbl

I almost skipped this reaction as I didn't much enjoy the show, but I thought it pretty likely Nick would enjoy, and I was curious how much he knew. I'm glad I did! The way he went in is exactly how I WISHED I'd gone in, but it was spoiled before I ever saw it, which I think is a big reason I just couldn't enjoy it. I was, thankfully, given a second chance with this because it really was fantastic seeing it revealed to a viewer at the same time it was revealed to Nick. And I'm very much looking forward to The Martian! I enjoyed the heck out of that one.

Yeah, the fact that they intentionally killed off his "dad" to give him ptsd and a fear of water in order to keep him there just... absolutely disgusting. I get that it was an actor, not his actual dad, but as far as Truman knew, that was his father, completely. Intentionally putting someone through that pain is just.... it's so horrific
@morley364
@morley364 3 года назад
And honestly for all intents and purposes, that WAS his real dad. It was the person that raised him, who he called Dad, just like any other kid raised by a non-bio parent. Only this parent agreed to abandon and traumatize him when his boss told him to. The absolute horror of realizing your parent did that INTENTIONALLY and sat and watched you grieve through a TV screen is insane.
@IulianYT
@IulianYT 2 года назад
But from the point of view of screenwriters - it is awesome. After his "dad" returned to his life, Truman kind of realized that his long lasting fear of water is unmotivated, so he could sail freely.

@@IulianYT I don't think the idea of being lost, nearly killed, with amnesia so you miss out on 20+ years of your life, would make the sea less frightening. Truman took to the sea in spite of his fears because he was more afraid of being trapped. He would have ended up do it that way whether his dad returned or not, in my opinion. His dad returning was just one of the many clues to his situation that helped him figure out what was going on.

Well, and I loathe to admit it, but that's a very human reaction too. Even if this marriage is all Truman has known, he's not an idiot. He knows it isn't working, for whatever reason. If we're talking about faves, I've moved into more thought provoking ones (such as Nolan movies). So, if you say that's a masterpiece, then my taste is god-like. It so happens to be your favorite, so you're biased. Just because it's you're fave movie and someone says it's so-so, you don't get to tell them they have poor taste. My class actually made a school play out of this. It was amazing! We had half a car on stage, several cameras filming and broadcasting live on a giant screen at the back of the stage. We promoted local companies and had a lot of fun little product placement, some real some we made up. And the storm and the rain at the end was wild! I would love to perform it again and again.

Your reactions are so pure, bless you. I had no clue what it was about when I first watched it and someone told me it was based on a true story and I was so gullible back then, I believed them (I figured it out a little later). It's fantastically done as you warm to Truman, laugh with him and when you realise it's a tv show and he doesn't know, you really start to feel bad for him and then as he figures it out, you just want him to succeed in leaving. I hope he reunited with Sylvia. Jim Carrey was an underrated actor at the time, honestly.

Yes, everyone knew the premise going into this movie. I've never seen someone figure it out while watching, and it was so satisfying! I was able to see where they were drip-feeding the viewer the information. Other people have said it's a masterpiece and I agree. Easily one of my top ten movies of all time. Everything about it gets full marks: the idea, the execution, the design, the writing, the acting, the editing. Just an extraordinary piece of cinema.

Hey! So usually people cross their fingers to signal they’re lying. Usually it’s done behind someone’s back, often as they’re making a promise or vow. Marian crossing her fingers in the wedding photo was her signaling to herself either consciously or subconsciously that it’s not a real marriage.

When this came out people didn't know it was a tv show either. In some ways it was more alarming as reality shows didn't really exist as a tv genre in 1998. The whole concept of filming regular people in their day to day lives emerged later. The only shows that existed were scripted shows with actors: sitcoms, dramas, etc.

Did you forget about "The Real World"? That was on MTV in 1994 or 93 if my memory serves. I remember not because I particularly hated the show (though I watched very few episodes of it) but because that was the time that MTV started to really change its programming until it became a bad joke to call it a 'music ' channel. Also, I'm reasonably sure I remember hearing about some other proto reality show in the 50's or 60's (like many things the idea is not a brand new idea but goes back) but I can't remember the name.

This movie was directed by Peter Weir, a truly great director. It contains what I call the "Weir moment", which happens in all his films: the lead character experiences a very strong, pivotal emotion which the audience _is not allowed to see._ In this film, it's when Truman realizes the sky is not the sky, and he freaks out and starts crying and beating the wall, but he does it with his back to the camera so we don't get to see that first moment of realization. Of all the signature techniques by directors, this is my favorite, because it gives the character authenticity by giving him _privacy,_ the intimation of a real person with aspects no one else can witness.

It's possible this movie was inspired by JenniCam. Back in 1996 a college student, Jennifer Ringley, set up webcams in her apartment that streamed 24-7 to the web. Of course there was no real streaming in 96 so it was just a still photo but you could refresh the webpage and see a new shot every time. It was controversial because you could see her doing -everything- except in the bathroom.

Well I am two years behind on watching this reaction but I made it and I loved it! Over the years i have heard references to this movie like New Girl, but it wasn’t until this year i finally got around to watching it. I knew what the premise was but the whole him being under camera for his whole life, did not see that coming. At first I though missing girl, island, maybe he had amnesia and had gotten into a storm, various scenarios why he was on a tv show. It allowed for some mystery thankfully. 6:53 loved that reaction, the light falling was suspicious but Truman could dismiss it, the rain though makes no sense. Yes some areas of a city will get rain while another part doesn’t but a singular spot like that uh uh. 27:53 this is the part where I hope Truman sued the hell out of the company, producer, director all of them. From using him, the emotional and mental abuse, to forcing a partner on him which could be a dark lawsuit once going down that road.

I am never able to see this as a "happy" ending. 1) He is never going to be able to trust anyone ever again. Everyone in the world will know him on sight, and that will have an effect on every interaction they have with him, implicitly or otherwise. And how can he be sure that they didn't just make this whole ordeal as a "midlife crisis" episode, and are still filming him in secret and feeding lines to everyone he meets? 2) All those people cheering about his escape *also* cheered when his "dad" came back -- despite being explicitly told that the creator faked the dad's death for the specific purpose of traumatizing Truman. They don't care about Truman; they care about the *drama*. They would have enjoyed it whether he escaped, was forcibly returned, chose to stay, or straight up died in an artificial storm. At *best* they might have thought it was an "unsatisfying ending to the series" but they wouldn't actually care that he was *killed* for trying to make a choice that the creator didn't like.

This is a metaphor for truth (TRUman). The whole world is a metaphor for the false mind, all controlled by the ego (the director in the sky). Finally he leaves into the real world, or the human leaves the world of thier fantasies and illusions made by thier ego, and enters reality. Its a spiritual parable :)

I really love how speaking to the show creator is essentially a parallel to talking to god, since that man WAS the god of Truman's world. And in the end Truman rejects god's fated path for him, and chooses uncertainty and getting to live a genuine life with people who truly love him.
