Also Jim Carey has talked about if we ever saw a sequel to this film it probably would be that Truman becomes miserable. I think unfortunately that makes sense as even if he and Sylvia got together, the psychological issues Truman would have of over thirty years being a test subject , would lead him to find it almost insurmountable for him to ever trust reality. Anyway as we found out in our timeline cameras are getting more prevalent and we are often seen and manipulated by others. Sorry if that’s a downer but I think it’s incredibly interesting and this film has and still does mirror what are future could become. That’s why the film ended where it needed to perfectly. Truman escaped a fake world said fuck you to a man playing god and got to something if not better, a truer reality.

@@Lilithly I've watched a TON of reactions to this as it's one of my favorite movies, and a shocking majority of reactors don't understand the whole crossing-the-fingers thing. That said I kind of get the confusion because 1) it's not made super clear that's what he noticed in the photograph, most people assume they missed something more important than that, or about the ring or something - and 2) crossing your fingers doesn't REALLY mean anything, it doesn't ACTUALLY negate the marriage; it's more just like something kids do in jest, so for an adult to do it as if it has any actual significance is unusual and a bit weird. Personally I always felt like it was probably the weakest of all the clues/breadcrumbs that slowly lead him to discover the truth, that they could have just cut out and it wouldn't have felt like the movie was missing anything. I guess it does set up the callback where he says "I'll cross my fingers for ya"....but still.

that specific scene hit me hard watching it earlier today. So much of my life has changed for the better in the last few years, but I remember being in the thick of the dark times and how it felt coming out of it. Of course there was validation and excitement finally reaching what has felt like only a fignment of the imagination for a while, but there is absolutely grief having to accept that so much of your life has been robbed of you. It feels a little bit like laying to rest part of yourself. I cried watching him hit those walls today. The dang movie is like 25-26 years old and I have seen it several times before, but not since I made it out of those walls in my own life. Ash and Hannah, so impressed by your discussion on this, especially when Ash starts theorising that some people would just prefer to live Truman's life unaware. This movie is frequently featured in beginner philosophy classes as it's an accessible introduction to the philosophical concept of ontology, i.e. the nature of existence. It was Parmenides who first asked, "What is real?". This movie, like The Matrix after it, asks questions about existentialism vs nihilism, and the struggle between truth and freedom: is the fact that you can perceive something enough to believe it's real, or is everything an illusion or an artifice? And if it's an illusion/artifice, would it be better (or 'freer') to know that, or is truth overrated and it's in fact preferable to remain blissfully ignorant inside the bubble? This was later developed further into the "simulation hypothesis" - the theory that we're all inside some sort of simulated reality. It's fascinating stuff!

IIRC the actor who played Marlon said his take on the character for his performance was to think of him as being in a dark place mentally from having been raised inside the TV show since childhood himself and simultaneously genuinely liking Truman whilst having been raised in a cult-like manner to routinely betray his genuine friend. Fucked up! There's deleted scenes on RU-vid where one hints at his discontent. I think Peter Weir definitely has a bunch of spiritual/religious subtext going on in this one, he's touched on those kinds of themes in the past.

Every time I see this movie, I wonder what happens next. Truman was like what, in his 30s, so for like 30 years, "the entire world" was watching him live this scripted life. Everyone knows him, and can literally recite back to him his whole entire life and every single thing that happened to him, so when he steps into actual reality, ironically, how would he be able to interact with normal people who aren't smiling in his jaw all day and know that they just want to get to know him and who he then becomes in the real world free from production. RU-vidrs like family vloggers, say this all the time...they'll go somewhere, and someone will be like, I was so happy when for your son when he finally got his drivers license, and it's like who are you and how do you know that vibes...but it's because its all out there, their lives are in a way a script that people subscribe to every day. That ----- is scary. You can't be anonymous, because everyone would want to know his story. People would be following him and telling them how much his life meant to him. I think he's literally go insane with trust issues and having to deal with an actual world where every day wasn't pleasant at all.

One of Carrey's best performances. In my opinion, his best one was Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind. It is in my top 5 movies of all time, and Jim Carrey completely disappears into the role. Kate Winslet is also fantastic in it.

Ash, you had a wicked good point when you said that some people would choose that life for themselves and embrace the delusion. Jean-Paul Sartre talked about that, how freedom is cumbersome and most people won’t chose it because of how utterly responsible we are for our own decisions

I watched a lady reacting to this woman the other day along with her husband you had seen the movie. She was the whole time completely unaware of what really is going on and that pissed me off. You guys are a breath of fresh air and kudos to the lady here who is so clever and expressive.

If I remember correctly there was this whole thing where they cut scenes that show his best friend and wife are actually married in their own behind the scene lives and the reason his friend always drinks is because he has an alcoholic problem from being on the show so long and being fake af to Truman

Okay but seriously, Hannah is scarily perceptive. She could probably understand the full plot of The Green Room (easy), Donnie Darko (medium), or even Primer (hard) on her first viewing.

If you thought this was amazing which it is you will lose your mind watching Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind! It is by far Jim Carrey’s best roles and one of the greatest movies of the 21st century. I would love to see Hannah’s interpretation of the philosophy behind it. Please react to it, it will blow your socks off!!

This is one of my all-time favorite movies, and I was lucky enough to see it in the theaters as a teenager. There are all kinds of little details that you'll only notice on multiple rewatches, and some great deleted scenes. Also, the movie is quite different from the original script. One of the early drafts was much darker and action-oriented. In the ending, Truman shoots down a helicopter, escapes off the set, has to sneak out of the studio, and nearly kills himself and Christof.

The finger crossing thing is to cancel out whatever you're swearing to. When we were kids we'd say "Sure, I promise," but if you had your fingers crossed it didn't count.

32:13 "Let's see what else is on." Exactly. Even if "The Truman Show" was the-biggest-show-on-earth, no one really cared of it. When it was over, immediately viewers thought that what-ever-else-show-next was the best thing ever again.

This is one of my faves. I've seen it multiple times. I had a weird moment when I was like 9 years old when I had a similar belief to what Truman was experiencing, (like, "what if everyone secretly knows me? and they're all in on something I'm not?)",,and then a couple of years later, this movie came out. That was quite an odd experience. Also, Hannah was amazingly perceptive when it came to the intent and agenda behind the show and the movie.

Oh Ash, if there is ever a way to interpret something you will read it the wrong way lol, Hannah was completely right about the finger crossing--it means the person doing the finger crossing is not "in it", like if I were to agree to something while crossing my fingers behind my back, it means I'm not actually planning to go ahead with what I agreed to

Many thanks us watching the movie say things like “why wouldn’t do this or that?” Or we question the inauthenticity of something because it doesn’t look realistic to us. Truman though doesn’t know better. His life has always been this way. Christof (Ed Harris) himself explains this nicely when he says “We accept the reality of the world with which we are presented."

Two things you may want to look into: A while back, there were three seasons of a show named "The Joe Schmo Show" where basically what happened is they got someone to sign up for a reality show, but it turns out that they're the only person who believes what they are filming is an actual show. The rest of the contestants are all actors that are trying to create these completely outlandish scenarios just to see how the one "Schmo" will react. In some ways, it's a bit like this show, but it's not the whole life. Second, if you really enjoy the conspiracy style stories, another good one to check out is Enemy of the State with Will Smith and Gene Hackman. It's an older movie, but it's superb.
