A timegrapher is a device that listens to the ticks and tocks of a mechanical watch, and gives you a visual representation of the health of the watch movement, so you can fine tune its performance. If you do watch repair or watchmaking on mechanical watches, a timegrapher lets you adjust the watch's timekeeping accuracy and helps you optimize how strong it runs.
This video is an unboxing, setup and description of the Weishi No. 1900 Timegrapher.

Jeez, sorry for all the harsh comments in here! Seems people are unable to understand that not everybody making youtube videos is doing so with the intent to provide professional education and service to the viewers. It's okay to make videos about something that is interesting to you because you want to, regardless of your knowledge. I enjoyed watching, thanks for making it!

Thanks Matt! I appreciate your kind words. I've learned a lot since making this video, so maybe it's time I did a follow up. 👍🏼

Just received my 1900 and was amazed they used a metal prong on the end of the microphone. Scratched the first watch I put on to check. Taped it with a single piece of electrical tape and turned the gain up. Seems to work just fine now.

The scratch is a bummer, but thanks for sharing your fix! Same is true for my unit, and at first I buffered everything with a microfiber. But now I have a better feel for it and don't use the cloth or cause scratches. Gotta say, the microphone is so sensitive in the unit that it can pick up a watch beat before I fasten it down, just by holding it near the sensor. So I doubt that your tape trick is going to affect the reading. 😃

How do you determine Lift Angle? Is a web site available for stock ETA & Val Joux movements? Just subbed. I have this machine! Thanks
@WatchWithMike
@WatchWithMike Год назад
Thanks for subbing… I'm glad to have you onboard! To find the lift angle, I have just been using Google and searching, either by the watch model or by the movement caliber code. I usually check 2-3 sources because I have found bad information on the web about such matters. If multiple sources agree, then I am fairly confident the info is correct. 😄

Thanks very much. I did as you suggested and was amazed at how many other parameters were affected. What I didn’t do is check other sources. I’ll hit that next. Thanks again and boy am I glad I found you!

I'm curious what movement you have, because despite the Weishi machines defaulting to 52 degrees, the 2824-2/SW200-1 is supposed to be 50 degrees, and I believe the Valjoux is supposed to be 49. But like the other guy said - I'd get your watch cleaned/serviced. +18 a day is okay, but we also don't know what grade of movement you have.
@WatchWithMike
@WatchWithMike Год назад
I don’t remember which movements I have, but I know those watches definitely need to be serviced!

You are talking microphone and you put a cloth to protect your watch. Do you think it changed the numbers? Thanks Mike
@WatchWithMike
@WatchWithMike 2 месяца назад
Great question! I don't think the cloth changed the timing of the watch. If it had any effect it would be on the amplitude, but I don't think it would change it by much. The microphone is so sensitive I have had it read a watch that wasn't even sitting on the telegrapher yet, but just sitting near it.

Help please! Bought used tudor black bay 58 m79030n caliber MT5402 Time graph Test period 4s Lift Angle 49 degrees Wind 30 times let it run for 1 hour Then I tested it on timegrapher amplitude was under 250 so I wind it 20 more times then my readings were Dial up +1s/d Amplitude 262° Beat error 0. 3ms Parameters 28800 Vertical crown left -11s/d amplitude 189° bet error 0.3ms Parameters 28800 Vertical crown right -7s/d Amplitude 197° Beat error 0. Oms Parameters 28800 Dial face down -1s/d Amplitude 255° Beat error 0.2ms Parameters 28800 Does the watch need to be repaired? Should I return it? Thank you

Oh gosh, I'm not sure I'm qualified to answer! But the inconsistencies could mean that the watch needs to be cleaned/lubricated. Was it serviced recently?

You haven’t had the watch serviced in 50 years? You’ve undoubtedly caused significant wear on the internals.
@WatchWithMike
@WatchWithMike Год назад
@sebii - Great point! This watch DEFINATELY is overdue for a service. In defense, it was only lightly worn by me in the 1980s and has spent the last 35 years in a drawer, so there is hope. :) I appreciate you commenting!

@@WatchWithMike The watch may be 43 years old but since it was not used all that much and because they already were using synthtic oils in the '70s. Synthetic lubricants don't evaaporate or gum up like mineral-based lubes do. Synthetic watch ols becamse forst available in the 1950s and became ever more popular. I doubt the movement has been damaged or that it shows excessive wear. The fact that it runs pretty well after sitting for such a long period of rest is a good indicator that nothing juch is woring with the watch. I wear my automatic watches regularly and I wear them for up to 10 years most of the time between services. What gets replaced is isually the pallet fork because the pallet jewels wear, and the rotor bearing and of course all seals and gaskets (which I have replaced aevery 3 years since I;m a swimmer). I put a little piece of sticky tape on the metal part of the watch cradle/clamp on the timegrapher and it protects the watch case.

Uh... I don't mean to be unkind but why in the world would you go on RU-vid to demonstrate a sophisticated watch analytical tool when you know absolutely nothing about? It was embarrassing to watch how you couldn't even figure out how the microphone stand rotated to get the watch in the face up position. It's kind of like somebody who knows nothing about firearms demonstrating how you check if the gun is loaded by looking down the barrel.
@WatchWithMike

Hi John, when I rewatch this video, I also realize how little I knew about the timegrapher at first. This channel is my story about my learning curve… and showing my inexperience has been encouraging to others, especially when my subsequent shows show improvement!
@johng.6222
@johng.6222 Год назад
@@WatchWithMike Well... Most people who view RU-vid Don't immediately subscribe to a person's channel and then watch all of their videos. Typically they're looking for a specific thing to watch especially with a topic like time grapher and if they see your video I doubt seriously if they would be encouraged to watch others to see if you've improved. So my constructive criticism would be to take a few minutes to learn about the time grapher before posting an embarrassing video such as this... But I guess that's my opinion, huh?
