Alpaca Male You referenced one piece of an extremely well put together video. Don't pretend like you could just as easily pull off his Rorschach style image fades, his panel stenciling, his color transition during the primary vs. secondary description, and I could go on and on about the technical details put into this video, but the truth is, it comes down to the amount of passion and research he puts into the topics. I actually learned something. And he did it in a fun and interesting way. That takes talent and it's obvious that his style of editing shows it.

Great video bubson. I read Watchmen in high school after seeing the trailer for the movie and I thought it was amazing (the book). So I gotta give credit to the movie for getting me interested, even though it was a pretty much a complete shitshow, spare some really well done scenes - like the intro fight with the comedian and Dr. Manhattan's transformation.

"An adaptation should never replace the source material." That's why I have mixed feelings on the Frankenstein films. They were important to the development of cinema, but they have totally replaced the image of the original novel in the public's eye. People think of the monster as Boris Karloff, not the intelligent but murderous character of the source material.
@cineturon
@cineturon 8 лет назад
So, it sounds like the monster in "Penny Dreadful" was very close to the literary character.

+Martin T. Considering the title of the show is literary, they better have been faithful!
@TheRhetoricGamer
@TheRhetoricGamer 7 лет назад
The same could be said of Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde. Almost all adaptations have Jekyll as a scientist who accidentally cursed himself to becoming a big, horrible monster. In the book, Jekyll deliberately enjoyed transforming himself into Mr. Hyde, who was an intelligent, short but remorseless man. Jekyll liked becoming Hyde because it freed him of moral and social burdens, and his addiction eventually consumed him. As a result of modern adaptations, most people think of what was supposed to be a cautionary tale about human behavior into a less interesting version of the Incredible Hulk.
@babywolf4238
@babywolf4238 7 лет назад
I disagree with that statement. You should always strive to make the best text possible, even if it means replacing the source. If this had resulted in the film being better than the graphic novel, then we would have gotten a great film.
@juantsu2000
@juantsu2000 7 лет назад
farmzombie I don't completely agree. If you are going to adapt something into a movie and adapt it EXACTLY like the source material, then what's the point in making it? However, you can't change the source material to the point where the spirit of the story is gone. Basically, when making an adaptation you have the job of making something original and necessary (so that it doesn't feel like milking the og story) but at the same time knowing which elements of the source material don't need changing so that the essence of the story is still there.

@Jacob Wood How is the movie garbage? It's pretty good as a film. It's not As good as the graphic novel course but however it is still a very good deconstruction of comic book tropes in superhero cliches. It also does a better job at executing most of the scenes from the comic better then the original pages in my opinion.

It was actually Fearful Symmetry, but I'm glad you pointed out this chapter. It's right in the middle of the graphic novel, and if you look at it closely, the entire chapter is completely symmetrical, from the panel layout to the motion of the characters action and even the colors. It's the most brilliant and overlooked thing ever done in comics. If you have the comic, I'd recommend going back and finding the exact middle of the book, then turning each page forward and backward to the beginning and end of the chapter (all about symmetry), and just be blown away by the genius of it.

Thing is, I never really understood why people called Watchmen "unadaptable", I thought it was pretty straightforward. Of course, that would mean they'd have to cut out a lot of elements, but I thought it could be done and Zach Snyder proved it. But then after watching this video, this guy has really opened up my eyes. It now DOES make sense why they chose the 9 panel comic layout, and why the colours were chosen, and many other things. Great video.

I love the movie, and I love the book. Both to death. But I never expect or want a comicbook movie to be a DIRECT adaptation. I appreciate the changes Zack made, and I visit both of these works of art on a regular basis. I cant say which I think is better because they are two different mediums, but I certainly dont think the movie is a step down from the book, and definitely dont think Zack missed the point of it at all. The movie and the book are both polarizing, even while being cult classics. Its a story simply not for everyone, but I love that its one for me.

@@jthodges4741 Yeah not really, point is it was a great adaptation into a different medium. You can't adapt symmetrical panel spreads to a screen that only shows one "panel". It was also by design the movie had lots of action and gore throughout and a rather bloodless climax (energy explosion), which was commentary on the action movie genre in general and audiences desires, not just comic movies. Comic movies weren't quite as prominent back then compared to now.

Snyders Adaptation of Watchmen is a "superhero movie" about Superhero movies. it shows this extreme violence that was becoming popular and mainstream at the time and it asks us "do we really like this" we see him "parody" and give those inside jokes to show how we look at cape films. snyder uses the same concept moore did with the "graphic novel and how its laid out" idea and adapts that to the film.
@matthewknudson8610

I keep imagining what a good and proper film adaptation of Watchmen would even look like? Who would direct it? Who would handle the cinematography? Who would be casted as whom? What changes would this adaptation feel needs to be made? Will it have the inverse politics like Snyder's did? What would even be the appropriate runtime? Should it expand across more than one film? Will a faithful adaptation even happen in my Moore's lifetime? Will it happen in mine? Will it ever? But the most important question I find myself asking is - Where can I get my hands on this near perfect graphic novel and read it again? Great video dude.

I think that comic as an art is underrated . Comic must be greater than a film if is well done because is more intimate experience. You can watch a film with your friend. But when you are watching and reading a comic book, you are alone and you are more catapulted in the world of images 'cause you have all the time to read and think and see the details. In a film you do not have that "space" in which you can think about and the entire scene could be lost, passing fast away. In every comic you make the time , the reader is in some way a part of the "direction". But in the fast internet era everything is lost in a blink of an eye. No time to think about it, that's what is the real "mainstream": fashion without thinking. That's why I love comics.

I'm sorry, I read how his(Gilliam) movie would've turned out. He wanted Dr. Manhattan to turn back time and stop himself from being created and then have the characters turn into comicbook characters? to what end? Snyder's ending was both meaningful and beautiful. His execution unique and powerful. He's in a very unique position as well. His art is very divisive, normally people shouldn't like these kind of art in the first place and over time develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of them. The more I think about his films the more I understood why the divisiveness. His style is both generic and unique where most "unique" films focus on depth and the meaning of it's art, the more generic films focus on spectacle. Which is exactly how Snyder directs his films, both with substance and actual entertainment. A good mix of both, very unique. Unlike Nolan who can't seem to keep a good balance of both, but rather have very interesting stories to tell. Snyder knows how to incorporate beauty with meaning. In short, the myth that Snyder is all visual no substance is a lie. Any person with a brain knows this to be true. EVERY Snyder movie has substance, he's just so good with making his art look good that people take the meaning for granted. It's just that undeniable that he makes beautiful films. He's the perfect director for watchmen, just look at how he sequences it. Even in MoS his sequencing is awesomely unique. It's undeniable he is a true artist.
@jonathanstarsmoure5791
@jonathanstarsmoure5791 6 лет назад
MrSquifler "Can't make a meaningful film" Now that's just spite. So you're actually staking your intelligence on that? There's no meaning behind how his Watchmen changed the ending? How the violence is so vulgar in the early stages of the film and then how the climax was so ironically abrupt? How MoS's sequencing is pure art where his flashbacks are in conjunction to certain events? How Krypton's fate foreshadows earth's? And how it is used to make across the point of traditionalism and radicalism? Please explain.

Watchmen is constantly lauded for its writing (which it very much deserves), but I don't hear as much praise for the visual composition of the art, which is just as complex and important -- if not more so. Each panel frames a moment in a purposeful way that carries dense symbolic meaning and it's this that keeps me coming back and discovering new connections with every read.

Yeah I felt the movie ending made way more sense, would they really be able to figure Jon was the cause of the creature coming from another dimension? It was surprising and awesome but the explosions make better sense, every survivor would recognize what, who, done it. This movie is so under-appreciated. I read the graphic novel just before it came out and the movie blew me away.

***** And that was a stupider idea than the one from the movie. Uniting the world against a known threat is easier and makes more sense, than inventing a new fake one that no one has ever seen before. The movie just did this particular bit better than the comic. Its not a personal attack against anyone, it just fits the world better.

Great video! I agree with almost everything, 2 issues I have. 1) there is blood and gore in huge detail hanging off the ceiling in the comic when Dr. Manhattan vaporizes then men in the restaurant so I'm not sure Snyder's violence was overdone in respect to the comic. 2) the suit Ozy wears in the film is in fact a parody of Batman's suit, you're right on that but costumes in the comic were often meant as parodies of comic book costumes. So isn't the films version a parody of comic book film costumes perfect for a film adaptation? I think al lot of the violence and costumes are meant as film version parodies the way the comic was a parody of comics. What do you think?

To some extend, I must respectfully disagree. I never liked how every movie adaptation is judged in categorys of "that is not, how it is in the book, or comic, or whatever". Those are just different mediums, having different strengths and rules. You are absolutely right, that a comic has a way of telling a story, that is way different of the the way, a movie can. But that way is not by default better or worse. It is just different. So it just makes sense for a movie to step away from the source material at some points, to tell a story that does work on film. And for that reason I don´t think it makes sense to compare a comic/book with a film. The question should be "does the movie work as a film?" and "does the comic work as a comic?"

David Schuster The plot came up short with Zack Snyder's adaptation and he missed a few key details and some symholism that was presented in the novel. Also the mastermind behind the whole plot in the story was, in a way, very fatherly and loving and wise. In contrast, Ozzy in the movie looked like he would stab the heroes in the back at any given moment.

@marcogianesello6083

Yeah, things is watchmen's directing is terrible. It manages to essentially copy paste the plot and yet be so tone deaf in its aesthetic that it misses the point of the original entirely, while owing every single quality it possesses to it. That's just a bad adaptation all around. It' not different enough for the ideas change, and it's not well made as far as portraying them goes
@bigpictureguys8415
@bigpictureguys8415 8 месяцев назад
They made the vigilantes seem like they had superpowers. That fundamentally changes the source material in a way that warps the message. Different medium or not you shouldn’t change a central tenant of the property for no good reason. Coulda done those fight scenes without the over the top flare

Snyder's Watchman is just okay, it doesn't have the subtlety and grandeur of the Graphic Novel, but no true adaption should shoot it word for word and scene for scene. The whole point of adaption is the adapt to a new medium and in this case it's film. Though I do admit I did like the whole Nite Owl beating the shit out of Ozymandias scene since that's what I wanted to happen after Rorsach died in the comics... the asshole who caused it to happen to get a smackdown. Though it's better in the comics with just Ozy asking Dr Manhattan if he did the right thing and the good doctor telling him nothing ends.

I really loved watchmen movie,how the visual novel was a meta narrative tackling and focusing on things which are usually not cared about,Snyder creates a meta fiction where he tackles the usual norms of superhero movies,it was interesting,if you can't adapt the source,adapt the idea behind it and make it unique

Snyders movie also doesnt respect the build up at all. We never get a complete origin for Rorschach for example but the opening titles show young Kovacks before you as the viewer are suppose to even know Kovacks is Rorschach. He also shows Veidts plan in the first 10 minutes of the movie..revealing KARNAK before you are suppose to know it exists. Its one big spoiler!

How do you propose to put all those issues in one movie? I found watchmen very good and a fresh take on film making.(never read watchmen) I read the first few pages of watchmen and I like how detailed the first night owl was with his life, but you can't, you just can't put that in a 2 hour / 3 hour movie. He took the concept and put it in there and I loved it. Loved how the criminal was so close to them and how theatrical it all seemed.

First I want to say that I watched the movie first... and it is really good. I read the comic later... and it is significantly better. Secondly I completely disagree with "an adaptation should only be seen as supplementary." I think an adaptation should stand on it's own and needs to make changes to adapt to a new medium or to add new or different ideas. Look at Disney adaptations.

I'm always gonna love Watchmen (film) soley because of Rorschach. Talk about perfect casting. Can't see/hear anyone else. The moment he loses control and butchers that creep felt real (and SUPER satisfying)! Everything with him was outstanding. Movie gets a lot of (valid) shit, but Snyder did some good. I instantly felt the history of partnership between Rorschach and NightOwl II

I remember seeing the trailer for watchmen in theaters. I clearly remember the trailer stating "the most celebrated graphic novel of all time" and my friends and I laughed, saying "how can it be the most celebrated if none of us have ever even heard of it!?" We were around 18 at the time. I went to see the movie in theaters and absolutely loved it. I read the comic in a single sitting a few days later. If it wasn't for the movie, I would have never known about Watchmen. I clearly appreciate it as a masterpiece now. Mind you, I wasn't a huge comic book nerd or anything but I'm half japanese and have been reading manga all my life and have been to my fair share of comic book shops. edit: forgot to make my point, the film may be flawed from those that loved the comic from before. but it absolutely did a terrific job of reintroducing the watchmen to a new more desensitized generation and getting people like me to seek it out. Spoilers: This is an unpopular opinion but I prefer the ending of the movie over the comic. It made more sense to me, and I thought the story flowed a lot better that ozymandias would use doctor manhattan's tech and energy to destroy NY (and other major cities) rather than introduce extradimensional beings at the very end of the comic (only in NY if I remember correctly). It really threw me off when I saw that squid monster at the end of the comic. It felt like it came out of no where rather than seeing John constantly working on the machine that was used in the climax of the movie. It also made more sense to me that doctor manhattan could no longer stay on earth because of what adrian did in the film rather than just not wanting to be on earth anymore. Still love the comic as a separate thing from the movie though. Just my two cents as a person that was introduced via the movie rather than the graphic novel.
