Water Etching on Ceramics: Creating a Fun Design with Underglazes

Water etching on ceramics is a technique that creates a slightly raised surface, ultimately resulting in a tactile texture that often gives a piece of pottery additional interest. Adding an underglaze as part of that process and design can give the final result even more depth and interest - not only in feel in the hand, but also a visual moment for the eye.

Inalways enjoy your videos. Is the piece bisqued or greenware. Looks like bisque? Like your haircut by the way.

Thank you so much!🧡 The cup is bone dry greenware, not bisque. As for the hair - thanks! Just keeping it simple🤓

Once bisque fired, do you add a clear glaze and then send through the kiln? I'm brand new to ceramics, but learning a lot and this technique looks really fun!

It is fun and so many possibilities! And yes, after the bisque firing I apply a clear glaze then fire it again. Thanks for watching!😊

Are you applying this to green ware or bisque? Can it be done with either? Good videos thank you. 😊

This is applied to bone dry greenware. It wouldn't work quite the same with bisque-ware. The areas that were waxed would feel a bit raised from the rest of the surface when applied to bone dry greenware, but not on a bisque-fired piece. Also, if applied to bisque-ware (application of underglaze then wax before washing off), you'd have to fire the piece a third time in order to add a glaze because you need to burn off the wax in the 2nd firing before applying the glaze. Hopefully this makes sense! (And thanks for watching!)

Thanks for the great video, Rebecca. Can you tell me if you would need an oil based wax resist for this process? If so, do you have one you would recommend? I only seem to be able to find water based wax resist. Thanks again!

As you may have discovered, there are many wax resist brands on the market; the one I use is Reed Wax Resist and it is water-based. I've never used an oil-based wax resist. I'd be concerned of the effect it might have when burning off in the kiln - maybe bad fumes or smokiness. Hope this is helpful. And thanks for watching!

A week later… I just read an article by Maggie Boyd and she highly recommends an oil-based wax resist for her water-etched wares. She doesn’t mention a brand tho. Just thot I’d let you know. =)

Thanks, Rebecca. I just did an experiment with water-based wax resist, shellac, and mod podge. I think going forward I am going to go with the shellac (my kiln is in it’s own separate shed). Thanks again for the great videos and your response. 🤗

What brand you use for the wax resistant? My is water soluble, I think doesn’t work for this technique 🤗 lovely demo

It's Reed wax resist. The only downside is waiting several hours for it to really dry and harden before using the water. Some folks use something stronger - like a varnish - but I don't like the smell and the added odors when firing. You need good ventilation! Thanks for watching - glad you liked it. =)

Thanks so much - glad you liked it! In this video I’m using a low-fire terracotta clay that is bone dry. The technique would work on a mid-range (cone 5-6) clay too.

hello...will u pls tell about the firing temperature?

I’m working with a low-fire clay body so I bisque fire it at cone 04. After applying a glaze I fire it at cone 05.

a total waste of velvet underglazes especially since its expensive if you get wax on another part it's a real problem
