Water Filters- One of the Most Important Things You Can Own!
I think water filters are really important. No matter which one you choose, you should own a water filter and keep one in your rig or bug out bag at all times.

There’s so much to learn and consider before choosing the RV life on the road

Yup, but there's so much that people can't let all this stop them from getting in the RVs, vans and minivans. I've been thinking about a water filter system for the minivan I've been living in for two years. 😄

Good idea to pre filter the water going into the bag with cheese cloth or the like. Keeps the really big debris from going into the filter.

Back-flushing the hollow reed filters should be done every other use for it to last. They clog fairly easily and ALWAYS have to be protected from freezing temperatures or they will FAIL. 🌿💦

the backflushing on this one is different than the Sawyers, etc... and much much easier, not that those are hard. Seems to good to be true, but I've seen the MSR website product demos and they explain it. Bob demonstrates the super simple process for flushing this MSR Guardian Gravity at 7:15 in this video, and yes, as Bob reiterates, it should be done each time, but unlike all the others I've seen, you just twist a valve.

Backpacking thru hikers mostly take the Sawyer Squeeze (around $30), not to be confused with sawyer mini or micro.

Be careful not to let the filter freeze, as it will be ruined. I left mine in a shed between trips and it must have frozen - next time I went out there was zero flow. Luckily I had enough gas to boil water instead. That was an expensive mistake!

Putting a water purification tablet in the filtered water would be a good idea. Best to use flowing water to fill the bag if possible. And having the bag in the sunlight is good to. Some nasty viruses are killed by uv light.

If I'm not mistaken Lifestraw has a setup where you can filter water into containers, but I could be wrong. The Gravity Filter looks really nice even if it is a little pricey. Keep the good stuff coming Bob.

If you're really concerned, get a desalinator. The price goes up 10x, but nothing larger than an NaCl molecule can get through it. No viruses, prions, amoeba, bacteria, minerals, nothing. You actually want to add a little minerals back because otherwise the water can be so pure that it's not good for you. You also need to be careful not to use water with petrochemicals, or too much sludge in it. Prefilters are important.
@billredding2000
@billredding2000 Год назад
"You actually want to add a little minerals back because otherwise the water can be so pure that it's not good for you." That's a persistent myth: Nothing wrong with "too pure" water (aka: distilled water) -- it's not going to hurt you at all. -- BR
@MikeTrieu
@MikeTrieu Год назад
@@billredding2000Well, you will get an electrolyte imbalance if you don't also supplement with the range of electrolytes your body needs to run your muscles and organs. I drank a lot of distilled water one morning, did some pretty intense work out in the garden, and then a couple hours later, I was suffering from debilitating muscle cramps until I drank some electrolyte powder from Costco mixed with a glass of water. Muscles calmed down in about 15 minutes after that.
@KabobHope
@KabobHope Год назад
@@billredding2000Correct. The only reason to add minerals back is for taste and if you're talking about a survival situation that's the least of your worries.

I have a military grade extremely fine water purifier that I take on kayaking trips and long river cruises etc. It is awesome EXCEPT it will clog VERY quickly if you put muddy water through it. So a lower grade pre-filter should be used to get 99% of the impurities out first THEN run it through the purifier. That way it will last for many thousands of litres of water.

Will these filters handle water from lakes that have blue algae blooms ?
@jeanwatson189
@jeanwatson189 Год назад
I wouldn't try it! The filter would remove the algae but the algae would already have produced toxins. In public water treatment they have coagulants to remove such toxins, but that's not a home treatment. I believe the only methods we could use on the road would be distillation or reverse osmosis.
@timgillman

You reverse the flow to backflush, so you are using some of the clean water you just filtered.

I was taught to boil the water (then let it cool down) before drinking it, to purify it. Is that not safe to do?
@janefreeman995
@janefreeman995 Год назад
Yes, the cdc recommends boiling for 1 minute. It can be inefficient and inconvenient and of course uses the power source. I'm coming from a backpacking perspective. I've used a sawyer filter that claims a $30 -40 filter will last 100,000 gallons. It's only 2oz and can be set up as a gravity filter or squeeze a plastic bottle .... uses the same thread as most water bottles. It's time tested since thru hikers have been using them for over a decade. When I travel I carry a Katadyn befree that has a faster water flow but clogs up faster and lasts 1000 liters before changing the filter. I think wall mart carries sawyer.... I think there's a home version as well. One thing tho is they are ruined if they freeze. I'm not sure if his expensive one would be the same.
@jeanwatson189
@jeanwatson189 Год назад
Boiling water will kill protozoa, bacteria and viruses. It won't do anything about most chemicals, eg agricultural pesticide runoff, industrial chemicals, etc. If those are a concern you could follow boiling with an activated charcoal filter.
