Coning is a rate-sensitive phenomenon generally associated with high producing rates. Strictly a near-wellbore phenomenon, it only develops once the pressure forces drawing fluids toward the wellbore overcome the natural buoyancy forces that segregate gas and water from oil. Bottomwater can be pulled into a well by excessive producing rates: this may occur in either an oil or gas well. This problem is called "coning" and is indicated by increasing water oil ratio as flow rates are increased. Clear sight tubes are a waste of time. You CANNOT see the oil in the tube unless it’s black like the oil Jed Clampett saw when he was “shootin at some food”. I hauled crude oil for years and 90% of it was clear like water. You can’t see shit in that clear tube. Just measure it with color cut the old fashioned way. 😏
Carroll Heard You’re the only person other than myself that I’ve ever heard say that. If you have high gravity crude oil in the water like the area where I haul out of that clear sight tube on the load hose doesn’t mean shit. Only the low gravity dark oil can be seen in that tube. Most drivers think that sight tube is a Godsend but they can’t see any better than I can. I hauled crude oil for Sunoco before I hauled salt water so I know what the different gravities of crude oil looks like. Most of the drivers are just pretending that they know what they’re doing but most of em don’t know shit.
When I don't have a sight glass I use my bucket and when I feel I'm close to hitting oil I'll close the main valve and open the one inch check valve. I'll usually have an empty water bottle and sprinkle some fluid onto it to see if it's oil water or bs.
No containment for loading? I do the same job in the Marcellus Shale and the pads have loading containment. Also, we don’t climb any tanks we use a computer terminal.
‘Tank bottoms’ is just unwanted fluids in the bottom of the oil holding tanks. “Pulling bottoms” is just that, pulling fluids from the bottom of the oil holding tanks. When and oil tanker arrives, they connect and take a sample. If more than a certain percentage of unwanted fluids shows up, they’ll reject pick up. Facility company will dispatch for a vacuum company to pull bottoms. A vac company will arrive, usually within a couple hours, and vacuum the bottom of the oil holding tanks of any water. The clear nipple poster mentions is a ‘sight glass’ used to see the color of fluids being pulled. Oil sometimes looks brown. When you see oil, stop the pull. You can see how low the output line if you pause at 1:02 it’s just mere inches from the base of the holding tank.
