I have that same heater (installed 2016) and am currently dealing with the same problem. I used blue teflon tape and dope over the tape when I installed it. The nipple on the cold side just disintegrated. I think it’s a metallurgical defect.
@richk3c
@richk3c 6 месяцев назад
Most likely nothing to do with the teflon tape or whether you use dope or not, but rather you are attaching a copper pipe to a galvanized nipple. These two dissimilar metals should NEVER be connected together. It is better to attached copper to a brass nipple like he is doing here in the video, but even better if you use a dielectric union between the nipple & the pipe. I just checked both my hot & cold water connections on my water heater and the connections are pristine like the day it was installed back in 2010. Yup, the plumber used a dielectric union. Check them out...well worth it!

roto-rottor came out yesterday for the something, the dude told me that since the heater is 20 yrs old it's not worth replacing those two inlet tubes. I wonder now after seeing your vid. I touched the insulation and it was bone dry. there was water in the pan. so I vacuum it out, opened the pressure valve and it blew out old gunk out of the pipe outside. today there was some water around the down pipes and pressure valve only, not the pan. all three look crusty😁. he said $300 to replace the inlet tubes or $1400 for a new water heater install. still waiting for them to call to schedule whatever I decide. maybe I should call another plummer🤔 water heater is still working fine

I wouldn't use them because they probably aren't as good as the ones sold by plumbing supply houses. Take, for example, toilets that are sold in big box stores. You will typically find cheap steel bolts packaged with that toilet. The same toilet sold in a plumbing supply house will probably have brass bolts. That isn't always the case, I once bought a Mansfield Cascade tall toilet from a supply house and it came with the cheapest steel bolts they could possibly find.

Aren’t you not suppose to apply heat to the inlet and valves?
@heinzotto1194
@heinzotto1194 Год назад
If the nipples have “heat traps” (gaskets to prevent heat loss), you shouldn’t apply heat so that the gasket doesn’t melt. The nipple he put in doesn’t have it. Either way, he applied heat pretty far up, doubt it would have done any damage

You put the brass nipple. The original one is eqipped with galvanized nipple, isn't it? I think a brass lasts longer.
@daveh681
@daveh681 6 лет назад
Those di-electric nipples don't work because nothing separates the outside of the threads from what you screw on there. Even with Teflon tape you end up with a metal to metal connection that will carry the free electrons between the dissimilar metals causing corrosion and then leaks. Add that to the fact that water heaters always create moisture from condensation and that moisture wants to evaporate out the top right next to the nipples.
@jasonmushersee
@jasonmushersee 6 лет назад
what works is a di-electric union. bottom half is steel top half is copper and insulated with a acrylic sleeve so the copper never touches the tank
@skylinefever
@skylinefever 6 лет назад
This might explain this thing I saw when a subcontractor installed a new water heater at my mom's house. They connected the new water heater to CPVC pipes, then connected those CPVC pipes to the existing copper pipes.
@evanheffley1625
@evanheffley1625 5 лет назад
Galvanic corrosion (the thing that the nipples are trying to stop), happens when the WATER (electrolyte) touches dissimilar metals. The plastic inserts make a bridge from one type of metal to the other (from the waters perspective). The metal to metal contact on the threads has nothing to do with galvanic corrosion. That being said, the effectiveness of the nipples is questionable in my opinion (plumber).
@daveh681
@daveh681 5 лет назад
The last few threads on the nipple will be in contact with both water and the dissimilar metal.
