this is a lot different than geoff lawton's ideas of water management. He does use ponds, but, usually he builds swales that catch water near the top of the property on contour so that the water drains into the soil as it goes down hill. He doesn't want to keep the water on the surface, but wants it to drain into the soil. Basically, not collecting at the lowest point, catching it, and draining it into the soil at the highest point before it reaches the lower points.

However - as there are situations in very poor countries maybe without any diggers available there are examples where people built dams only with spades - using all kinds of material. Please have a look at the work of Rajendrah Singh in Rajastan, who presented his work on the Water Symposium 2012 in Tamera. The principle is the same, the methods are simpler, but highly effective. Good luck.

Danger of starving? Not at all. Water retention is a benefit also for the areas downstream. Different from dams, it does not take water away, but gives it time to infiltrate the soil in a large area. It makes the water flow in a smooth and stable way and protects of droughts and floods further down.

The water retention dam was a cleaver solution for the community, as shown in the film. It was built basically for the community. However water dams have pros and contras such as the creation of a micro-climate and evaporation, elevation of the phreatic sheet, dams alter the flow regimes and physical habitats, sediment transport, water temperature and chemistry. A population of algae, benthic macroinvertebrates, riparian vegetation, and resident and migratory fish will be created with the dam.

I think it's a wonderful concept and I admire Sepp's vision for a sustainable future and his dedication. Why waste all that rainwater by letting it flow away when it's so badly needed by people and the environment? It's going to rain the same amount whether we catch and reuse it or not. He's not damming rivers, so the outcome isn't the same and can't be compared to conventional dams. It's just catching rainwater like I do in my rain barrels; just on a much larger and more efficient scale.

@ricbraun1 The big dams built on this earth create a huge environmental damage and in fact have more contras than pros! But the water retention spaces are alternatives that empower the people to create autonomy food and water. The negative effects of dams will not appear in these decentralized and natural systems if they are built in the right way.

All deserts and Mediterranean type climates can benefit from this type of water retention. Yes, deserts do need protection from floods! It is a common misconception that they do not, when in fact the lack of top soil causes flash floods during even small amounts of rainfall. If the springs and ground water increase the micro climate is improved, thus allowing for more rainfall in the area as well.

So I only have to use the already existing landscape with its ups and downs to dig a further deepening into the already existing deep zone. Then I push the outtaken dirt to the outskirts around the deeper area. You are right. That should be a much smaller area to be worked on. Thanks. :) Then I better look out for a dynamic landscape. BTW: I stumbled over the jena-hof, one of the less lucky projects. I hope I will never have to face such a disappointment like that. :(

Small dams are better than big dams, but there are still costs to water retention landscapes. Tamera relies on the catchment upstream, if someone came in upstream from tamera and built their own water retention landscape then the people of tamera would be in danger of starving. Tamera was built in the middle of some badly damaged land, so they improved the landscape,but there are places where doing this would be damaging the land.

@GMgracemedia They do create autonomy, which is great. Is it possible though, that certain things that we think are beneficial have adverse effects that we are unaware of? A bad example of this would be compact fluorescent light bulbs vs. incandescent, there is a trade off of mercury exposure for increased efficiency. Thanks!
@opcn18
@opcn18 12 лет назад
But Tamera doesn't need protection from droughts and floods. Tamera needs a large catchment area, which 'Tamera 2' would deprive them of. Tamera needs those flood in order to fill their reservoir and push up their water table and humidity. If they lost those floods then they would lose their water and lose their food. The rainfall in that part of the world can only maintain such a lush environment if it is amplified through a large catchment.

i'm not sure if i can put this lightly, but, did you read what i wrote or? did you reply to me on accident meaning to reply to someone else? i don't see how anything you said applies to what i was saying or the content of this video.? I understand those concepts, i've seen Sepp's other works, and i've done similar things before. i'm not discrediting ponds, but like in this video, or on flat surfaces where contour catchment is not possible(no grade), you pump from the pond
@GamlGandalf
@GamlGandalf 11 лет назад
I just found out that a pond 2km to 1km with a depth of 3 mtr is extremely expensive, especially on a stony ground. I would drop one 0 each, so that 200mtr to 100 mtr with a depth of 3 mtr is still something like 45.000 Euro if it costs 1,50 Euro per m³. That's so crazy. Sepp Holzer spend a lot of money for the ponds on his ground. Maybe it is better to buy an excavator straight away and to dig your own.

@shoopdeedoop
@shoopdeedoop 11 лет назад
Actually it is fairly similar, look at Sepps other videos and you see, he does try to retain water and let it seep naturally into the surrounding soil. Sepp also builds swales into his landscapes but he calls them by a different name. Basically on his property he uses terraces and swales, as well as "hugelkultur" raised beds. All of which are designed to allow water to permeate into the soil.

@GamiGandalf: The idea with the water retention spaces (=lakes) is not to dig them but to use the natural shape of a landscape like a valley and build an earth dam at the narrowest spot. For this you have to dig only the deep zone to get the material for the dam, and the part of the valley will be flooded. It still is expensive - but not quite as much as you say. And such a big lake would also not be necessary - but this depends on the general situations.

Since Tamera builds the water landscape,a spring popped up and provides downstream areas with a permanent flow of best quality water, even in summer! I don´t know which kind of landscape would be damaged by water retention.But of course it is at first place a possibility for renaturation in areas which are damaged through erosion, deforestation, floods, or droughts. However, it is true that building water retention spaces is work and thus costs money, if you are not doing it with your own hands.

Let's say you want to feed approx. 5 persons in an area which is stoney and appear to be dry on a hill but still wet enough that there are waterefficient plants growing like olives for example. Can a sea stay stable in a dry area once it became green? And how big should the pond be? How much does it cost to dig a whole let's say 2km long and 1km weight and 3 meter deep in an european price? Is there a need for an entry and exit at the pond so the water keeps being refreshed?
@opcn18
@opcn18 11 лет назад
But Tamera is up on the hills side. Deserts do need protection from floods in general, but Tamera is probably up on a 10,000 year flood plain. A flood that big would break the dam of 'Tamera 2' anyways. So when they need the protection they haven't got it.
