Dr Clare Kambamettu investigates the state of Ireland’s ageing and fragmenting water infrastructure and explores how we can safeguard future water supply with demand growing daily.
---------------
Water is our most precious resource, without it life would not exist. As an island nation with 70,000km of rivers, thousands of lakes and over 100 days of rain annually, we have an enviable supply of freshwater. And it's understandable that when surrounded by so much water, there is an inclination to think that it just ‘falls from the sky’. But how many of us know and understand the true cost of supplying a growing population with an estimated 1.7 billion litres of drinking water a day? It’s not just domestic use, Ireland’s biggest industries, pharmaceuticals, tech, agriculture and data centres also have enormous daily water demands and are putting new pressure on an engineered water system that’s already stretched past it’s capacity.
This demand is further compounded by an ageing infrastructure that leaks close to 40% of water back into the ground. Having an increasingly urbanised population combined with increasing demand, threatens the Eastern region regularly with shortages. How will the system cope with future impacts of a changing climate?

The beautiful pipeline at Ballycolen Duvlin 15 that you are laying is for the Data storage centers each side of where they are laid, beside the giant resovoire, it's not just the 15% energy that these data centers use up , so please tell the truth, I voted green and I still can't legally use my E scooter,

Wow I commend ur knowledge @Kevin McMuhammed..it’s it just awful that the greens have led us down this double standard path. Imagine if u stopped let’s say driving ur 3 litre diesel car around the city.. and u breezed around the city on ur e scooter..what a difference to ur carbon footprint. Fingers crossed common sense will prevail.

@@coolcat7830 it's the main reason that I voted for the greens, because I can use my partners car most of the time, i don't need a second car, but even her catalyst converter was stolen during covid because we can't park the prius near the apartment, because we don't have a parking space to charge it, the greens never built any extra jail or prisons since they got into power, this only encourages criminals to come here for criminal financial enrichment,

Why don't they install turbines to the water network the you can generate electricity all the way to your house by running the tap

Why the individuals not trying to harvest the rain water at home and rather buying the water at Irish systems?

I love eco eye but this piece is clearly a bit biased, nobody in Ireland cares about water meters it's the government's attempts to mandate water charges is what people don't like. Also not a fan of the way you use the term "populist" to describe people's attitudes to water meters and charges.. like do you really the Irish people to bend over and let the government f*** us with policies we disagree with 🤣

Anything funded by RTE is FG/FF Gov Propaganda - RTE always pushing Gov narratives. Thats why I don't watch RTE anymore.
