I need help with this question, please? 1. In water at ambient temperature, the solubility of MgCO3, CaCO3, Mg(OH)2 and Ca(OH)2 is about 10.6, 15.3, and 9.0 and 1600 mg/kg, respectively. Show that stoichiometric application of the lime soda process should leave a residual hardness of some 31 ppm CaCO3 equivalent.

Dr. Sturm, in the PE Env Eng practice exam book by NCEES, a hardness example problem shows concentrations for CO2, Ca2+, Mg2+, Na-, Alkalinity, SO4(2-) and Cl(-). The solution only includes the meq/L of CO2, Mg2+ and alkalinity in determining the amount of lime (CaO) needed in an excess lime two-stage system. My question, Shouldn't the calculation of eq. wt CaO include the meq/L of the calcium ion as well? The solution correctly adds the amount of excess lime in the sample water analysis, but why exclude Ca? I cannot solve this problem the way NCEES has? I think you're a better source than the practice exam writer(s). Also - and forgive me if this question is dumb - but why is CaO used and not CaCO3? Thank you, Dr. Sturm.
