This video will show you how to layer watercolor and colored pencil to create vibrant images with lots of depth! The left side demonstrates how to draw over a subjective wash of watercolor, building up layers and layers of color. The right side shows how to use colored pencils to more fully develop a watercolor painting by adding detail and texture.
I'm using Arches hot press watercolor paper, Prismacolor pencils, and Daniel Smith watercolors in this video.

I was searching for how to best combine watercolor and colored pencil. Thx for the tips. The way you let that expression come to life is like a face that pushes through the paper while suddenly hearing a faint heartbeat as if life emerging So vivid Cheers~

W prismacolor I use mineral spirits or Turpenoid with a brush to melt the pencil like watercolor pencils. That way washes won't affect it like it would a watercolor pencil. Hate the white specs under my pencil on watercolor paper. I can use a sharp tip and do 6 layers of pencil on Stonehenge but still use this technique to blend areas smooth like hair curls and pupils...

Thanks for this, I am getting into color pencil from graphite drawings, wanted to see examples of watercolors used for Background as willing entire background with color pencil will take much longer, Both eyes look great!

Thank you so much for sharing! This is exactly what I was searching for and, as a beginner in watercolour, but more confident in handling coloured pencils, I was not sure whether mixing watercolour (as background) and coloured pencil was 'acceptable'. Though, I am not sure what my watercolour teacher will say, but I will give it a try, present my artwork - and see what happens :)

There's nothing unacceptable about mixing media! When I began working with watercolor, I found it easier to add the details with colored pencil. As I got more confident in my painting abilities, I used less and less colored pencil. However, sometimes it is just a nice combination and aesthetic choice for one's work!

Hi Jescia. I finished my shell painting using your technique, did a wash for the scallop, and then did the detail work in coloured pencil. I didn't quite manage to get the colours and curved shape of the scallop right, but decided to leave it as it is for fear I would ruin the whole painting if I do more. It is still a real big hit and miss with my watercolour paintings. Sometimes it works, many times it doesn't. My favorite way to create black is combining payne's gray and sepia. In watercolor it looks much more interesting once its dry.

I think you should have only drawn the eye and eye lids on the left and left the water color in the aye as well. Now it looks like the eyes are floating over the water color. Amazing nonetheless!

Thank you so much for the lessons Miss Hopper. I would like to learn how to watercolor now that I am older and I have more time on my hands. Do you have any suggestions for a semi retired old man who has always wanted to learn how to draw and eventually try watercolours? Thank you!
