Well I am pretty new this year but so far the round brushes are my favourite as well as square brushes, but I am just learning. My first love is sketching and I agree that drawing skills are essential in any medium of art. :)

I don't know why dagger brushes don't get more love - a single brush that can do virtually anything. Also interesting are "Asian rounds" with a core of stiffer bristles inside an outer layer of soft bristles. They may be made of animal hair but that is horse and goat hair commonly and not wild animals.

I am now an ancient lady who started watercolour painting decades ago. In my childhood, people would scoff at the idea of synthetic brushes and insist that you would never succeed unless you wiped fur from a dead animal across your paper. I'm so glad that you highlighted the excellent modern synthetic brushes. Thanks for a great video, Michele.
@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber

No problem! Ethics aside I actually prefer the 'spring' of a synthetic.

I am so glad to have come across a vegan watercolorist.I have several animal bristles brushes (they were inherited- very expensive japanese calligraphy brushes, excellent for watercolours) and they look beautiful in a jar, but I just can’t bring myself to use them. They give me the creeps .I start thinking about how they were sourced and I can’t paint. I admire anyone who openly says they are vegan or vegetarian. I am still undercoverr. It is a lot of pressure.

Michele, I am with you on the usefulness of the toothbrush. In my watercolor painting, it is great for doing splatter, grass, dapping, stippling, etc. Your toothbrush is also very useful for cleaning your art supplies or in your home. It does a great job at getting in those tiny corners or around the water taps.

Thanks for all your suggestions and knowledge.

This was definitely a wonderful favorite video of the various brushes and how they are used to paint with. Your explanations & examples are very informative and helpful for helping me to decide on what I want & prefer to choose as my favorite brushes. I had found Anne Kerr’s brush video a while back and I find it interesting that she also has your first three brushes as her favorite brushes as well but her fourth & fifth are different from yours, a rigger & Hake brush . You’re right that it definitely depends on what subjects you’re painting on too. I am finding that I too have a set of favorites I use all the time as well. Mine is a #10 round brush, a #6 round brush, a 2 inch flat brush, a #0 rigger, a fan brush, & a Medium round waterbrush that I can’t do without. Thanks for sharing this wonderful information with us.

I have a lot of brushes from painting model railway wagons people and scenery. When i started painting and drawing i had 3 Derwent waterbrushes, i found these very useful.I bought a big cheap set of waterbrushes, some had bristles that wouldnt hold their shape some had barrels that leaked. I matched the poor bristles with the leaky barrels and binned them. the remainder are surprisingly good. I find a hake good for putting down big washes. I find as i began to find when painting figures about an inch tall that round brushes that are surprisingly large can still do fine work. I am not a vegetarian but find synthetic brushes are very good they perform well and are cheaper than natural brushes. I am going to try a toothbrush and a cheap makeup brush. A really useful video.

Except for the magic color mixology and your chemistry knowledge, which such dedication to get to your level ... I'm starting to get it. Taking comfort in the knowledge that I can watch it again and practice. I'm trying to go 'from 0 to 60' in a week, except just excitedly waiting for essential supplies to arrive. As a professional cook in my working life, I see the value of mis en place. Space to work, minimum tools, light, storage, order order order! I could be more tidy and this is a small place here! Logistics aside, I've just been binging your videos randomly. All the paintings I have finished, 2, that I like, are related to Neurographica, just messing around. That's when I decided on water color as a paint medium, though I never seriously tried it before. Oils would just give me an instant inferiority complex, like o no, I'm not as good as the old masters lol. I used to have a set of acrylics as a teen. Fun for modern and abstract stuff I did at the time. It did dry far too fast and then became impossible. It would easily peel off any 3 dimensional object i tried to embellish! Now, I feel it's not a responsible substance to flagrantly overuse. Sad because it makes great sweaters. But they'll never biodegrade! 😮 I look forward to more orderly lesson consumption soon. 😊

That was wonderful Michelle. It was very interesting to find out the real goods on sable / fur brushes. For me, for ethical reasons also, that is done. I am brand new this year so, although I have used toothbrushes for spattering, it never dawned on me to paint with one - thanks so much for that tip. Wonderful walk through. I am like you, I use always the same kind of brushes -around three or four in my craft room and just the water filled brushes outdoors - . I can imagine how confusing it must be for a beginner to have this overwhelming amount of brushes and not knowing what to get. I started watercolours later (after starting with oil and then trying acrylics ) so I had already discovered the joy of minimalism. Everyone should have a teacher like you. Thank you Michele again for a well rounded video. The best advice here I thought was to use the largest brush you can. The most annoying thing with some teachers is that the use miniscule brushes for large areas. Even if you are a botanical artist some washes are large and it is impossible to get them even with a small brush. But like you said it is a personal preference and subject matter. I really grew to like a dagger. It is easier to paint edges with it than a normal round brush as it is flat and it has a point and holds more water than a small brush. I do love my ragged toothbrushes too. So useful. I use a palette knife to splatter as my fingers get too much paint on them anyway. And even masking fluid is easy to clean from it.

Here is some trivia for you. As a pathologist, I have studied the microscopic appearance of synthetic fibers, plant fibers, and animal hair fibers. From a mechanical standpoint, animal hair has plates or scales, which probably help retain fluid, but potentially could hold debris from wood pulp paper. Cotton fibers are twisted, and stick together, and similarly is why cotton "paper" holds water better , and is cleaner than cellulose (wood pulp-rough) paper. Synthetic fibers are very smooth, being extruded during the manufacturing process. While they may not hold water as well as animal hair, they may feel smoother when dragged across the paper, and not as likely to attract dust or paper debris. So both brush types have pros and cons, and that is why cotton "paper" is preferable to wood pulp (rough)paper (except for the expense haha)

Yes I know about hair structure because I trained as a hairdresser years ago, we also looked at wig making, where I learned that all the hair needs to run in the same direction (no doubt the same with brushes) or the scales cause it to tangle :-)

Still a beginner, but I pretty much only use the same three brushes, a flat brush for b/g washes (smaller than the one you show), a medium round brush, and a small round brush (smaller than the one you show) for fine details. Now I've tried using some of those more unusual brushes you demonstrate, but I can't get the knack of using them ...

Some of these stranger shapes of brushes have very limited application.

How do you store your brushes, especially those that you use infrequently? Dermestid beetles love the taste of natural hair bristles and can leave you with a hairless ferrule in short order. I still like my English Labrador dog hair brushes, home made(and my dog likes the brushing).

Oh I must try to make a home-made brush sometime... I just store my brushes when clean in an upright jar in a glass cabinet. I had to google Dermestid beetles. Although they do live in the UK I don't think we get them indoors much. I have never heard anyone speak of them. Most of the creatures that cause problems around the world just can't be bothered here, the weather is too cold most of the time! :-)

And after a recent exoerience, practice a bit with any new untested brushes on some scrap or towel. I bought a bargain assortment that shed like crazy ruining my painting. Lesson: test new brushes and cheaper isnt always a bargain.

Do you suggest doing a color wheel if you want to be a watercolor artist
@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber

I personally don't find them helpful, but that doesn't mean they aren't if you know what I mean. I tend to think of colors in more of a family tree type way, primaries, leading down to secondaries etc. So if you feel a color wheel will help you then it's a good idea. Technically they are correct, whether they are helpful depends entirely on how you learn best, do you feel drawn to them or do you find them confusing. Have a look at my What are Primary Colors video to see an alternative way of explaining colors.

@@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber Thx for response. I will def check out primary color video. I really enjoyed the brush types video. I did get several ideas about backgrounds. I do have color charts with all my paints and have a color wheel, which I purchased, but rarely use it?

Love your very helpful info, thankyou. I also avoid animal hair brushes, just not necessary these days and always involves animal abuse which I won't be part of.

Interesting! Maybe I'm weird, but have they ever tried making brushes from human hair? I'll bet we brunettes would be just perfect for that experiment!
@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber
Not sure. I trained as a hairdresser, it's probably possible.

I find the content of your videos ver informative, however, I think the information would be easier to absorb if you slowed the pace of your speech. Tx.
@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber
Believe me it's an ongoing battle with my hyperactive self... meantime slowing the video speed in settings will help a little :-)
