A review of my first encounter with Caran D'Ache Neocolor 2 crayons. I painted a study of a juvenile Cardninal. I used a limited palette of red, yellow, ultramarine blue, violet and white and a Payne's gray watercolor pencil. The paper was 9 x 12 Stonehenge hotpress.

Thank you for the very helpful demonstration. I have seen mostly videos where people are using these not very sensitively or realistically so it was reassuring to see that they can be handled in that way.

I used use these pastels a few years ago and loved them I have recently just returned to drawing/ painting… and using them again, I love them, and Derwent Inktense blocks I enjoyed watching you It looks like your fearless self discovery is teaching yourself something new, I loved you sharing your observations as you progressed discovering things about this medium and gaining insight about this medium …. I have been doing both, doing artwork myself, and learning from others … I just thought I would bring to your attention, by sharing with you, a couple of other artists who are using these crayons I watched these today I saw another demonstration of how to use this medium and the advice there was: use very small amounts of water, and build up colour with blending, and intensity by over layering….the program was by The Frugal Crafter Lindsay Weirich called “Why don’t I use these more?” Using Caran D’Ache Neocolour 11 (2) Twisted Art Designs 12 Neocolour 11 (2) Caran D’Ache Pastel Technique Wishing you happy painting and the joy of it

Thank you. I appreciate your sharing with me. There are so many new variations on media out there to try and to experiment with.

I'd seen a few demise when I first purchased the neocolor but I wantedvto use them as a watercolor more than a crayon which is why I used more water.

Hi, I am just about to watch your video in full, but noticed you wondered what the stickers were fore. There is a sticker for each of the products that come in the red tin. Each tin is identical, and so if you look closely at the stickers you may notice a pencil shape with Neocolor II on it. Attach that to the outside of your tin. It is transparent, so all you see is an inoffensive white outline against the red. I have Neocolor I as well as II, and so each tin is identical, so the sticker is very helpful indeed. I can just imagine myself going insane constantly opening the wrong tin. Hope that was helpful to anyone else who also wondered at their purpose? Best wishes from Scotland.

@@JoanMansson I thought your video was utterly perfect. It is rare for an artist to use something for the first time and release a video about your learning curve. The results were beautiful, despite your not yet having fully mastered the medium. I can well imagine, that 1 year on from this video, you are ably showing your mastery.

Thank you: this was a very helpful introduction to a new medium.. One question: when the painting has dried, is it as ‘fixed’ as watercolour or does it have the vulnerability to smudging of soft pastel and oil pastel?

It doesn't smudge when it's used with water. It does dry like watercolor does. I'm not sure how long it takes to cure when it's used dry.

How do you get those long leads on your pencils? Please! 😮

I use a Kum Automatic Long Point pencil sharpener. I bought mine at Hobby Lobby. It's a handheld sharpener with two openings.
