Absolutely Gorgeous Piece❣️ When you print your reference photos do you print on photo paper? Do you change the quality settings on your printer? Thanks 😊

I print normal settings on regular copy paper. I refer to it for some things but work more from the image on my screen as I paint, which is more vibrant.

I always use Frisket High tack film... its clear, acid free and and doesn't leak at all. It comes in different size rolls and it super handy to have in the studio, it is easy release too. It is used by alot of people that do airbrush work. This packing tape is actually very acidic, and the cheaper the tape.. the worst it is. If you ever smelled cheap packing tape ( or packing tape in General ) you will get a strong wiff of almost a strong Vinager smell... I know all about this lol, I was a chemist for Dow chemical company for 14 years before I followed my dreams and became a full time professional artist and Bookbinder. We made the adhesives for 3m, locktite, gorilla glue, etc etc. The adhesive in packing tape is cut with very harse solvents to remain extra sticky for packing boxes. It has acids in them as well, that arent neutralized to keep the adhesive from drying out. The cheaper dollar store ones will literally use acidic acid and distilled vinegar to cut costs in production... so that why the cheaper packing tapes have a stronger smell to them ( it literall will attract bugs, it is basically like those flies strips cut down with strong solvents) . So iam just giving you a friendly heads up on that 😃. I always have art vids playing on my studio monitors while iam working and creating in my studio and Bindery... and I always enjoy your videos. Hope you have a good day.

Thanks for the tips Deejay. I have used the Frisket film although perhaps mine wasn't high tack as my very wet washes totally leaked underneath. Perhaps it was because I was using cold press paper as well (slight texture). I have had very good success with the cheap packing tape. I haven't worried about the acidic properties of it as it's not on the paper long enough to be of concern. Good advice about the acidity though, especially if working on a project where it will remain on the paper for a long time. I will have to pick up some of the high tack Frisket and see if I have better success next time. Thanks!

@@shelleypriorfineart well I hope you didn't take my comment as any disrespect towards the way you do things... just a heads up incase you didn't know. The gallery I have a contract with is a tad bit extreme with things like that... anything that comes in contact with original artwork, that can not be reversed. That goes for the process, packing and any Shipping... not archival, yata yata yata lol. Iam sure you know how that goes. So it is deeply ingrained into my being 🤣 I catch myself worrying sometimes with things that don't matter, like sketchbook stuff and so on. The high tack frisket film is definitely much better than the regular film ( it almost has the same tack as the packing tape, and it forms to any surface with texture ), and the low tack film. It works absolutely perfectly with cold press papers ( rougher or smoother ) and I've used it many times on rough Saunders Waterford, perfect clean lines 👌. I learned it from a friend that does alot of professional airbrush work, and uses 100% cotton watercolor papers. I said the same thing to him when I asked what he was using to get such clean lines..." frisket never works for me, I bought a roll " He said that he only uses the High tack film. But yes, it works amazing on watercolor papers. Completely saturated, soaking and multiple washes... it is a life saver in my studio. It saves alot of time because it comes in different sized rolls... very long and wide that can be easily applied to a full imperial sheet of watercolor paper. It's clear and cuts very easily, you can feel when you are cutting through it clean on the surfaces you apply it to. I definitely wouldn't put the word out on it, if I don't use it myself lol. Anyways, I always enjoy your videos in my studio and I hope you grab a roll of the High tack, you won't be disappointed. Have a great one 🙂

Shelley can you use staples on your gator board , I'm thinking of getting one ,I've not been doing my paper right ,I don't think, I am just a beginner and have just been wetting the top off my paper for wet on wet and taping it on cardboard that I have coated with a matte finish clear coat can of spray ,and then tape it down and wet my paper , right now am afraid to buy quality paper because Arches paper is 26 dollars for 12 sheets ,afraid to waste it ; and know my way is wrong ,but must be careful of cost of things ,I am 73years old and not much money ,but I do so love to watercolor so I'm not using quality items ,but as I improve will spend what I need , at least I have you Shelley ,I watch you everyday over and over because you are the best teacher on RU-vid , I just so want to paint something someone would want to buy ,not that I would sell anything because my daughter wants everything I paint ....lol...

Hi Linda. Yes, absolutely you can use staples on gatorboard (regular not heavy duty staples). I have a video on stretching watercolor paper here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yotWHF1sKeY.html It's my opinion (and that of most watercolor painters I know) that the most important material you can have is quality paper. If Arches is out of your budget, there are other brands that are also 100% cotton that you can try (W&N, Saunders Waterford, Fabriano Artistico). I would suggest investing in one sheet. Cut it into smaller sizes or turn it into a sketchbook (video link below) and use it for learning what the paper does with small studies, rather than for something as precious as a complete painting. Don't start by trying to create something that someone will buy. That's too much pressure. Give yourself permission to experiment, play and stretch your 'watercolor legs'. You will discover for yourself how very differently other papers behave. This is not wasting paper, it's a learning opportunity and a chance to get familiar with the characteristics of your materials. Use both sides too. Remember that if you struggle to achieve the techniques you see online, it may actually have a lot to do with the paper on which you are working. Make your own sketchbook out of a sheet of watercolor paper ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oO1yppftymQ.html

I'm excited and grateful to find this, as I've been wanting to try this technique but could imagine lots of potential pitfalls which you addressed. My biggest concern has been how I could know how deep to cut to ensure I cut only through the tape but without cutting or even denting the paper. How do you know that? I love your teaching and videos, thank you so much!

If the paper tears it is mostly likely due to the type of paper rather than the brand of tape. I used Arches 140lb cold press and dollar store tape.
