Hi Friends, In this review I am testing violets from different brands: Daniel Smith, Holbein and a more afordable alternative Jackson's Artist watercolor. I test value range, wet into wet, texture, staining and many more. Honestly, I was surprised by the results.
Hope this is informative.
Happy painting!
Nina

Hello, what’s lovely comparison! For the mineral violet composition PB29 stands for ultramarine blue and PR122 is quinacridone magenta, I have this color and I’m obsessed about it

I think you just saved me a bunch of money. So tempted to get some Jackson's Artist watercolour during the current sale.

Me as well. I have a few Jackson's watercolor choices to try in my favorites list on their site, and will be removing them!

Hiya Nina, Jackson's Artists Watercolour paints are made by Sennelier and contain honey. The original violet that you didn't like, was it Winsor and Newton? Winsor Violet is single pigment, PV 23 and is very popular with many Pro ' painters, and has a very dark and wide value range. Thanks Nina, x

Oh, I did not know about that. Many like Sennelier. The Violet that I used was gifted to me. It was a trial run. I'm not sure if they improved it, just in case, if they did, I don't want to say the brand name. Ive heard only good things about W&N Winsor Violet and wanted to buy to test, but something stopped me. Don't remember what it was, either it wasn't in stock or the hue ☺️

@@nvfineartstudio7296 Despite the fact that the paints are produced in the same factory, they are not the same. Exceptions are cheaper pigments, then the colors are really very similar. Otherwise, JACKSON paints have more binder and the paints are not identical. But the cobalt blue is already on a different pigment PB 72 instead of the standard PB28. PG7 is added to viridian, which also makes it a different color than viridian should be. Thus, the colors are not the same in their properties, although they are similar. Unfortunately)))) because Jacksonart is much cheaper.

Thankyou! Interesting that they put Pbr25 brown in the Mineral Violet.

Agree! But when I look at these three pigments I see how the mix of them makes MV. MV looks very similar to the Permanent Brown but missing red + blue. wish they share more info about the pigment choices.

It's funny because I was gifted a couple palettes on Van Gogh watercolors by my husband for my birthday and they're SOOOO vivid for being between student and professional grade. I also have a few tubes of Daniel Smith and honestly, I prefer the Van Gogh.

Interesting. You said you liked the holbien over the Daniel Smith paint but the holbien was the wrong colour for shading. So have you found a use for the Holbien colour and how did you do this ? By adding black ?

Hi Sand June, no, I'm not using it at all at the moment. But it's ok, it's not like I'm going to stop painting any time soon 😊. It may grow on my in the future. I always change colors in my palette (I used to love raw sienna for example, now I'm more inclined to yellow and golden ochre). I don't want to mix it as the whole idea was to have a "mix of alizarin and ultramarine" always there. I like to paint shadow wet on wet and it saves time having Carbazole always there.
