I'm learning watercolor for the very first time. I have found your videos to be the MOST helpful out of so many I've watched. I've been practicing these leaves and they're not coming out quite right. You said in the beginning NOT to curve ur stroke. But, for the 2and stoke, the bottom stroke, we DO curve slightly?? Thank You so much. I was so lost on everything until I found you and your wonderful videos. I enjoyed you love art school one SOO much I've been practicing these dang on leaves for days lol. I just couldnt thank you enough or explain how much you have already helped me. 💕💕
@JennaRaineyChannel
@JennaRaineyChannel 3 года назад
Hey Crystal! So a compound stroke should do the “curve” for you. When you apply pressure to a round brush it’ll get fat, and as you get closer to the tip of the leaf, you’ll gradually release that pressure so the width of the leaf tapers to a fine point. This will naturally give the leaf a curve without you having to curve your brush! Also, just wanted to let you know, I have a new leaf tutorial coming out Friday (good timing for all if you leaf practice). I show how to paint ten different, easy leaves. Definitely don’t miss it! Happy painting! ❤️

A long time ago, I read an instruction book about Chinese painting. The author said that master painters can spend years practicing bamboo leaves to learn how to do them perfectly. In the true chinese tradition, painting is as much a spiritual/meditative practice as much as an artistic process. The mental image and mental relaxation (that alpha state that your brain goes into when really 'in the zone') and hand and brush and paint are all one. Over and over and over again, every day, filling up pages and pages with these leaves. You're only considered a master at them after doing them literally hundreds of times.

Where have you been all this time. I am so glad to find your sites. Just a beginner with the handicap that I'm and 80 years old beginner. Thanks for your refreshing, informative, and relaxing way. I don't find many tutorials in real time. Most of them are 15 seconds to maybe a minute...too fast to keep up.I'll try to find your book. Keep up the good work. You are just too cute and nice and original and relaxing and knowledgeable. Thanks. Diane.

Thank you so much for this tutorial and for the patience with which you repeated so many times how exactly to hold a brush and apply the pressure. Just as you said, once I got to my paper, I was about to do it in a different way so... thank you for knowing exactly where we, as beginners, would go wrong and for trying to help us! The exercise seems straightforward and simple but it does make such a difference! I love my new leaves! 🙏🏻

I'm a newbie to watercolor. I tried your technique and I succeed a few times but this will take me a lot of practice. I did the straight line and I applied pressure on the brush then slowly lifted and my leaf had parts missing on the leaf and I loaded my brush? I don't understand what problem is? Then I used a different brush a 12 and it worked just fine? It might be the brush but it's brand new? I was using a 6 like you used. I don't know but thanks for the tutorial. I will be practicing. 😊
@JennaRaineyChannel
@JennaRaineyChannel 5 лет назад
You'll get it, Jane, just keep up that practice! It took me a long time to get it just right. Try a variety of different levels of paint on your brush and mess with how much water you add... you'll find that right combo that gives you what you need for those leaves. It does take practice tho, so keep it up! You'll be painting leaves in no time! Happy painting!!
