🤓 Changing the glasses today and getting into some nerdy stuff! 🤓
Beginnings are never easy… that’s why I’m starting this series specifically for watercolor beginners. Over the years many of you have asked me to create a beginner’s course - walking you through everything I know about watercolor at the most basic of levels. And that’s what this series is all about! I’ll first be tackling supplies, but will dive into painting techniques and other watercolor tips I found important in my art journey.
TODAY’S TOPIC: Why is it that the wet into wet technique doesn’t always work? 😃 ENJOY!

Exceedingly helpful. Watercolor is a wonderful and frustrating method. Breaking it down into its components helps.

I REALLY need these beginner ones. Years ago I was pretty decent using watercolors, student grade, cheap brushes, this time around I went and got all artist grade supplies, Well, they didn't work at all like I remembered painting way back when! Every time I tried something it was a mess. I was actually intimidated by the process. It really does take getting used to the better supplies and your videos have the answer to every problem I have come across! I now have better control, I'm loving it! So a VERY big thank you hug for all that you do!

I learned that my brain understands perfectly the distinct and special nuances of this art, but that understanding does NOT translate down to my hand! Even with your excruciatingly clear instructions, I am a hot mess!

I think it's bc despite us knowing what to do overall, we don't yet know all the subtleties or nuances that can throw a wrench in our success. Like I can understand the importance of an underpainting, yet it's not until trial-and-error (and lots of online digging) that I figured out although I had the right paper and a decent technique, I just didn't understand the characteristics of my paints well enough to know which ones were better for first layers (staining) and which ones were better at glazing (transparents). Now I plan my paintings accordingly, to ensure I paint in the right order. Another example is water control, I knew that I had the right paper & the right paint ratio -- but it'd be until much later that I realized even the best quality papers can resist doing their job if they lose their sizing (which affects absorbency) over time. Sometimes it's not your materials, sometimes it's just you. One doubts themself, and so we subconsciously sabotage our efforts by applying the advice in a way that's not exactly like it was instructed. Maybe we don't realize it but deep down we're curious to see if we can modify the advice a bit or maybe we want to see what mistakes would look like. Either way, failure isn't the end of the task, it's just one step in many to growth & learning. Confidence is crucial in every stroke. We shouldn't doubt our ability, bc even the best artists make painting mistakes all the time. The magic of editing doesn't let us see those moments, but they happen. There comes a point when you realize you have to embrace the unpredictability of watercolor. She's not one to be tamed, but yet still taunts you to try in the exercise of play. It's challenging, but that's also what makes it fun.

She forgot to mention it’s not always the pain or the water. It’s the paper quality too-hot press vs cold press etc

I was like "what a good video with so little views" then I realized that I'm early hahahaha thanks for the video, the concentrated ones seem superior with any level of water

I learned a lot from this video, and I too plan on practicing with my new concentrates to get wet on wet "Just Right". I had to laugh when you said that the sheen thats "Just Right" looks like "fresh snow on a sunny day" because I grew up in Florida and have lived in South Carolina for the last 40 years, so I have never seen snow on a sunny day. :D I am also enjoying your new on line course because it is teaching me so much.

"it should look like fresh snow on a sunny day" meanwhile in the philippines-

I'm new to watercolor, but an experienced artist in other mediums. My problem was I was trying to do a background on arches 12" x 16" 140 lb paper block. I masked the foreground, waited for it to dry, then very generously applied water with a large mop brush. It kept drying very fast. It is a hot day, but I had no fans on, and AC was set to 74. How can I overcome this? I used a spray bottle, was that the right thing to do? Perhaps a humidifier in the room would help.

I think she means for us to look for the reflective sheen. Think of the wet surface of streets after a rain, or the morning sheen of dewey leaves. She uses snow bc it's white like your paper. Maybe a better example is the way the top of vanilla ice cream looks in the light, when it's just about to melt -- not frozen, not thawed, but soft. Idk I can't think of good examples, but hopefully you get the idea.

Question any suggestions for using watercolors in the desert? I live in Phoenix AZ and have found using watercolors here very difficult what with our high heat and low humidity. My water quickly evaporates or the paper gets soaked before I realize it
@brycenew
@brycenew 5 лет назад
I'm a total beginner so this may not work: wondering if a spray bottle with the nozzle adjusted to a fine mist, used to spray a mist of water over your paper and entire work every 5-10 minutes (or whatever) would help? Best of luck :)
@YourMajesty143
@YourMajesty143 3 года назад
Try getting a humidifier. It also helps if you use more water than what's typically recommended. There's also different types of paper which are better at resisting absorbency & allow you more time to paint. You can also try adding glycerin (or any other humectant) in your water to extend the moisture in your paints. I like to add it simply it makes my watercolor flow nicely, but try it to see if it improves things in your climate.

I'm rather new to water color but my understanding is that it has more to do with transparent and granulated paints? Does it not?

Like your AZ commenter, I too struggle with my artwork here in Northern Colorado with Very Frequent low humidity. Avg daytime here runs 9-15% regularly, & we Really feel it when it hits 25%. (Then monsoons hit & we see 40-80% & feel like I'm in a sauna! 🥴) Lawdy lawdy, what's an artist to do? I dabble in Acrylic/watercolor/chalk pastels (+ polymer clay jewelry) & really struggle to not overload with water/palette spray, & other mediums to extend the application or drying times. TY for these great tips, I've wondered wth I've done wrong when paint doesn't respond as I expect it too. Good advice to test test test before getting down to business.

Just curious, does paint flow from wetter to dryer areas in wet on wet or dryer to wetter areas? Thank you so much!
@YourMajesty143
@YourMajesty143 3 года назад
Dry to wet. Paint flows wherever water is. If anything, drier areas create a wall of resistance which is why you see backruns & cauliflower edges.

Would you be willing to try the liquitex acrylic inks? I have been wanting to try them out and they seem pretty cool, but there aren't too many reviews of them on youtube. I would love to see if you tried them out! Also, love the video! :)

Is there a certain type of paper this works best on? Are col pressed and hot pressed any different in absorbancy?
@lunakat5763
@lunakat5763 4 года назад
I noticed that it depends not only on which paint you use but also the paper.I did a test with one color on different 100% cotton papers some of the paint moved perfectly others stayed in one spot. Cold pressed works better with hot pressed the paint seems to stay on top of the paper.
