JUST DO IT! is a series of tutorials that I will provide for those who may wish to jump straight into the action! Based on my tutoring experience over the years I have recognised that we all learn in different ways and at a different pace from each other. These "Just Do It" sessions are aimed at those that are in a transitional stage where they feel a change of style and direction is needed.

Very appealing work, Howard. Though I counted maybe three times I thought the ugly had come to stay. Thankyou for the encouraging words.

Absolutely stunning…and those calligraphic marks with the rigger just create so much movement into a static image

Painting loose and fun are my goals exactly. Your narration of past experience while painting is a great help.

Best loose watercolor tips I’ve heard in my many years of painting! I also find using a pen for line work a great help in loosing up & giving me direction. Excellent!!

Fabulous painting Howard. Like you, I suffer from painting too tightly but watching your (and others') loose style inspires me to try my gut instinct on further paintings. Thanks for your narration too which compliments your style🙂.

I really love this loose style but I must admit I gasped a few times especially when you put that dark shadow over the buildings as I thought you’d nearly finished! But it certainly brought the painting to life! This lesson has taught me that you have to be bold sometimes and also to build up the layers in order to create better effects.

there is SO much useful and helpful information in this video. i really appreciate it, and agree with everything you say! thank you. (i also love using a non-waterproof pen with watercolor and letting the ink bleed into the washes. it instantly makes all the buildings look decrepit. :)

I find my use of charcoal pencil for preliminary sketching works for me in my watercolour painting. Judicial use of charcoal also works for me at the end.

Just seen your channel. Love the painting. Am the same. I can paint detail but have become bored and wanting to learn a loose painting. Have been trying but ending ripping up in frustration. Thankyou so much for your commentary

Yes, it can get a little frustrating. Paint lots of different subject matter and expect lots of bad paintings. It doesn't hurt so much! Good luck!

Your channel is wonderful. I’m new to the art and soaking up all I can get. Your style is very nice indeed. You mentioned Waterford paper. Can you elaborate?
@howardjones2159
@howardjones2159 2 года назад
Thank you, glad that you enjoyed the video. My watercolour paper is; Saunders.High White. 140lb. NOT. Surface in most of my videos, however I can recommend two others: Bockingford. 140lb. NOT surface and Arches, 140lb. NOT surface. Hope this helps.

You use alizarin crimson a lot in this paiting. Is it the permanent version? Thanks for super videos.

I use both the permanent (when I can get it) and the modern alternative. I haven't really noticed any difference in performance. They both stain in much the same way.

It looks like you place your paper on cardboard, I’ve not seen this done before, what are the advantages? Thanks, I enjoyed your results despite watching in horror as you painted the shadow colours with a large brush!
@howardjones2159
@howardjones2159 2 года назад
Hi David. Interesting comment! I mainly use three types of watercolour paper (no cardboard) Arches, Bockingford and Saunders Hi-Whiite. Nearly always 140lb. NOT surface. I sometimes use 90lb and 200lb depending on what I'm painting. I also sometimes use Rough surface but never HP (smooth). If I can be of any further help then please don't hesitate.Thanks for your comment and I hope that this helps! Keep in touch! Howard

@@howardjones2159 thanks. As to cardboard, I was referring to the board on which you had placed your paper. Regards, Dave.
@howardjones2159
@howardjones2159 2 года назад
@@Sherlock2022 Ah ha! Sorry David! My bad! Yes quite correct, in the videos I place a piece of cardboard on my easel, but this is purely aesthetic for a clean looking work area. It looks better in the video than having a messy background. It is not essential and I certainly do not bother doing this in my day to day painting. Most of the time I tape my watercolour paper to a piece of plexiglass (perspex) or a varnished mdf or ply board. Hope this helps! BW Howard
