I'm putting together a watercolour palette especially for Karlyne Holman online classes. She's a wonderfully cheerful and fun teacher, with very unique techniques and 'let's see what happens' attitude.

It’s so coincidental that I found this video. I’ve been looking at a lot of these colours through my own reasearch & this was so useful, thank you! I’m new to art & watercolour so I’ve never heard of Ms Holman but I will definitely be checking her out ^_^.

Ha ha ha SO glad to hear I am not alone. I may have one more 'filling the palette' video filmed and another one in the pipeline. Basically I am addicted to putting together palettes. It's so much fun isn't it? I have been using this palette, I used it in my sunflower speed painting video ( ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ILCByrY34Q4.html ) and love it. Haven't used all the colours yet, but the ones I have used, I really like them. Quinacridone Rose is my all-time ever ever ever favourite colours so I am happy to see it in any palette. The sunflower was the first time I used quin gold, quin burnt orange and the antwerp blue. They are all wonderful. I love how vivid the antwerp blue is, it's a great alternative to indigo and mix much better with the quin gold and quin burnt orange than indigo does. I'm putting together a transparent palette and maybe a opaque palette next, but I will definitely be using this palette to take part in rest of her course.

Oto Kano dude, I’m a complete and total palette junkie and spend a LOT of time making a zillion different travel setups. =>.

YES! I'm the same with the Quin Rose. Used to be a big Quin Magenta fan, then I came across Quin Rose. Now Quin Magenta doesn't even get a look in! I love how warm and intense the Quin Rose is. I can just stare at Quin Rose all day. Quin Gold is definitely my close second, how amazing is that colour? I started off being a Holebin girl, but I am slowly moving onto Daniel Smith because their colours are just something else! Yeah I obsess more about putting palettes together than painting. It's not a great habit but don't we all just want that one perfect palette? Then like the search will be over and finally get on with some painting?

I nodded throughout this exchange, as I'm a bit absurd about my palettes as well!! And Quin Rose! Though, I might love Quin Pink more... It's visually exactly the same as quin rose, but it's a different pigment so perhaps a bit more reliable in terms of being one color, where PV19 is like 10 different hues. I'm never making a palette hoard video because I don't need that kind of shaming in my life lol

I recently switched to a foldable palette for a studio set up, and what I did was use a palette knife to lift/scrape the paints off and stuck them on my new palette. There are some left on my old palette, and I feel so bad about wasting them since they're Daniel Smith paints. So I used the stains until what's left are stains that are stuck on the plastic haha Really enjoying your videos and you have a very nice voice. Found out about your channel from Denise and now I'm subscribing :D

Thank you so much for coming over from Denise & subscribing! :D I have exactly the same issue, what to do with old paints in the old palettes. I have several old palettes lying around that are shells of their former selves with just few dots remaining. Really need a good way to store them in a more compact way.

I love the look of that palette you're using for the color theory class! If it's not too much trouble, can I ask what colors you've got in there (or what class it was you're taking if they've got a list on their website).

Hi! I found you through Denise’s channel and am enjoying your videos very much! This is an interesting palette, I was wondering though why aureolin yellow? I have read on Jane Blundells site that this color is not lightfast and indeed turns grey quite quickly, so what does Karlyn use it for? Greetings from the Netherlands, Frouke
@OtoKano
@OtoKano 6 лет назад
Hi Frouke! Thank you for stopping by. Great question. I know Karlyn's obsessed with getting as transparent a colour as possible. She also priorities non-staining colour above staining colour. The aureolin is the more transparent colour than the win yellow, so I think this is why she has it in her palette. Great info about lightfastness, thank you I didn't know that and I was just about to go into a new series using aureolin. You have saved my bacon. I love the Netherlands! Whereabouts are you? I would move there tomorrow if I could.

Oto Kano I live in the south, in Brabant, a mostly catholic area and in full carnaval crazy mode right now, have you ever experienced it? Everyone doing everything that their god forbids before they fast until easter (I think it’s easter) (and they mostly give up after 1 or 2 days haha). I love it here, been here for 25 yrs now. Where do you live? I detect a British accent?
@OtoKano
@OtoKano 6 лет назад
Oh the festival! No I haven't experienced it yet, but would love to. We honeymooned in Amsterdam, and since then keep going back. Love The Hague and also Otterlo for the Kroller Muller. What got you to move there? I live in Edinburgh, Scotland, but my accent is from all over the UK.

Hi Frouke, it's me again. I did some digging around about Aureolin. As you said, most Aureolin are made from the pigment PY40, which is notorious for fading very quickly. However, I seem to have got lucky. The Aureolin I use is from Holbein and they don't use PY40 at all! Their are made from PY154, PY175, PY150, all of which have pretty decent lightfastness. So I would recommend using Holbein's Aureolin if you decide to give this palette a try.
@froukebo
@froukebo 6 лет назад
Thank you Oto, I will buy the holbein aureolin as I am on a permanent hunt for the most transparent yellow. I wonder if Karlyn uses this same one or the winsor and newton one, which I once had and watched as it turned grey on my paper :) I find the holbeins in general difficult to layer as the underlying layer lifts quite easily, maybe I'm using the wrong technique. Have you ever used the old Holland watercolours? My husband lived in Nuenen, where van Gogh grew up, and we actually got married in the church where his father was a preacher! It is tiny and cosy and it was a beautiful day. BTW, I just had a look at your website, I like it! But I assume it is still under construction?

yup it's 'Color Foundation' by Stephen Quiller. You can find it over on Artists' Network TV. If you like the stuff they have on their website, I recommend going for the annual subscription rather than paying per class.
