I've wanted to test out all of the watercolour brands I've been curious about for a while so, with some encouragement from friends, I decided to turn my impulsive watercolour purchasing into a review.
Hopefully, this audio is better than my Dapper Raccoon video.
The watercolour sets included in the video:
Rembrant: www.jacksonsar...
Schmincke: www.jacksonsar...
Sennelier: www.jacksonsar...
Daniel Smith: www.jacksonsar...
Winsor & Newton: www.winsornewto...
Paper used: moleskine watercolour sketch book

Hey everyone!! Thank you so much for your feedback! I have attempted to strip the music from the video but found that I can't because it's not copyrighted. I will likely do another comparison video in future, as I don't know where the original files have gone.

Loved this!! Thank you for taking the time to take these out and review these on camera. These supplies aren't cheap, of course, and once I start buying a brand I want ALL their colors- it's a sickness, haha! I would love to do something like this, but I don't have the courage to get on camera. I have Schmincke, M. Graham, Daniel Smith, QoR, and Van Gogh- at least half of each brands offerings, save the QoR. Bravo for being so brave!!

Thank you so much❤☺️ this comment made me smile. I completely understand what you mean about the paint purchasing sickness. I'm admittedly quite the addict myself. You should definitely make a review video! I'm terrible at talking to camera and I'm a little self loathing but once you edit you'll eventually become desensitized to yourself talking and I'm sure other people would love to know what you think, myself included. If you do make a video, let me know. I'd love to watch it!!

Haha, scared by Schmincke made me chuckle, they're my personal everyday paints because they're the most readily available paints where I live. Also the Sennelier are probably an acquired taste, they do layer beautifully and allow for gemlike results, I find. Good for your for using black! :D And yeah, you're not the only one to purchase more than one brand of watercolours in one go.

Thanks for commenting❤ I do really like the schmincke palette. I went through the black so fast though and it tends to reflect light. I think I've developed a preference for Daniel Smith, the colours seem to be the richest and the black is matte.

Sennelier are one of my favorite colours too! Schmincke is the only brand i never tried because i they seem not so colourful and too expensive for the results i saw in other videos - but thats only my personal taste;-)
@UTleochi
@UTleochi 4 года назад
@@user-ic5xu4jh6z Schmincke are extremely reliable paints and give very natural results. They don't jump at you as Daniel Smith watercolours do, and most of them don't granulate much. There are some granulating colours, too, but most of the range are made with very finely ground pigments, so as to allow for very smooth application. I think Schmincke are best for botanical, portrait and very detailed painting. They layer superbly and gain luminosity the more they are layered. But you are right, they seem to be expensive in most countries other than Europe where they are some of the more affordable brands, especially when they are on sale. For me Daniel Smith cost more than double or triple the price of a 15 ml tube of Schmincke.

I own all the paints you reviewed above ..Each have own advantage in their own way For Ex. W&N 's quality,Sennelier's Transparency,Schmincke's Consistency ,and Rembrandt 's Vibrancy.But Personally My Favorite is M.Graham is absolutely stunning and next Daniel Smith for its large variety of single pigments.For European paints Rembrandt and schmincke are my favorites,Even some colors in Old holland 's Barock Red are gorgeous..Above all My secret and personal favorite is St.Petersburg's White nights,with that i can paint all day!!!!!

Thanks so much for your comment! I'll have to check out M.Graham when I've got the funds. I've found that I like Schminke's colour range the best but I love the vibrancy and opacity of Rembrandt and Daniel Smith. I'd love to see your work! Dm me on Instagram (_thewoodlandnymph_) if you'd like🥰 happy painting!

 is Winsor and Newton professional watercolor set considered really professional? I am a graphic artist that just bought a set,with the ideea in mind that I am buying some good quality pro stuff. I have second thoughts looking at it because Schimncke looks better. Can you give me an opinion on that? Have a great day

This is very informative and usefull. Thank you and thanks to those who have added their useful reviews based on experience of various makes of paint. (May I respectfully suggest - keep the music to a minimum, for the intro and end; your voice is lovely and that's what's relevant here)

Sennelier student grade are not good but the artist grade are very fine and good pigmented colours wich look very nice- i use only tubes. D.Smith are nice too and Van Gogh were my first colours but they can look a bit dirty after mixing. Later i bought White Nights- but not every colour is really lightfast, so i choose them seperately and its fun to work with them. I also have Mijello Gold Class- not toxic, high pigmented- but some dont like them because they are not so transparent and the flow is not good( without oxgall). Martha Grahams look only nice if i dont mix them:-/ so they are to expensive, never bis them again! Thanks for your video- i liked the background music:-)

@@TheWatercolourNymph yes, i bought them because they were not so expensive but you need a real good brush to get enough colour on it. Pigments are not so fine as in artist quality. But you use artist grade here, so i wondered you dont like them. They are beautiful if you mix them- Standard colour sets are a bit boring and quality not so well as selected seperately:-)

Great video🧡 Can I ask something? Do you have any information about Sennelier's lightfastness? I can not decide between W&N Professional and Sennelier...
@TheWatercolourNymph
@TheWatercolourNymph 3 года назад
Thank you!♥️ Sennelier and Winsor & Newton are pretty on par when it comes to light fastness. Certain colours and pigments fade faster than others. So reds (particularly alizarin crimson) will always fade over time and genuine pigments tend to fade faster than synthetic. If you're really concerned about fading, avoid paints with PR83 in them. I hope this was helpful☺️

@@TheWatercolourNymph Thanks❤️ I just can't decide between Sennelie/WN and Schmincke... I'm doing my research but the more I do it the more negative things I seem to find:(

I totally get what you mean! I personally prefer the texture of Schmincke and the boldness of the colours. I like winsor and newton but their quality tends to be inconsistent.

@@TheWatercolourNymph So far I've seen reviews about mission gold pure pigment, schmichke, sennelier, winsor and newton, white nights, daniel smith.... There are too many options (for example, ı just heard about mission gold pure pigment today) and some of them are really expensive in my country. I hear lots of good things abour schmichke too but I think they are one of the most expensive ones here, sad story:(

How can you possibly judge from such tiny swatches.???
@TheWatercolourNymph
@TheWatercolourNymph 3 года назад
Hey Anne, sorry about that. I was trying to fit everything on the one page so I could see the differences in pigment. I was doing what I could with the resources I had at the time. (After buying all of those paint sets, I didn't have the budget for more paper😅) After using all of the paints for a year, I'd say my first impressions were more or less exactly the same as now and I still stand by my thoughts on winsor and newton's viridian being the weakest of all of the colours. I bought a new pan because I thought there was something wrong with it, but had the same result. The overall quality of the paints doesn't differ much from brand to brand. Choosing which brand to buy is more so down to what consistency you like ie. If you prefer something creamier, stickier or dryer or if you prefer tube to pan. Personally I started off really liking Schmincke and Daniel Smith but now I've gravitated more towards Rembrandt. I hope this was somewhat helpful, Maeve☺️💜

Love the music and orbs! I was wondering about the actual pigment name with pigment color number on the tubes. The given paint names can be deceptive. Schmincke has three Ultramarines. So Im not sure which one you are testing. One is multi pigmented with some PB29 in the mix. Of the other two, one is a green shade called Ultramarine Finest and the other a red shade and much more granulating like most French Ultramarines are. Many of Sennelier are multipigmented too. Does the Veridian have real Veridian in it? PG18? Some brands use Phthao Green PG7 for Veridian. I have several brands and love testing them but need the pigment numbers to know exactly what I have.
@TheWatercolourNymph
@TheWatercolourNymph 4 года назад
Thanks so much! The schmincke ultramarine I used was French ultramarine (PB29). The Schmincke substitute for Veridian in that set was Phthalo green (PG7) and the Sennelier substitute was forest green (a mix of PBk7,PG7, PY42) I hope this answers your questions😊 Happy painting!💜

If you are still having trouble finding the brush part, check out watercolors by Allen Jay Quesada channel, he just did an opening of the Rembrandt luxury pocket box and he shows the brush in that. It should be the same as it is a standard design of travel brush on all Rembrandt and Van Gogh sets when they come with a brush
