I love to paint realistic lifelike eyes. Cats have fascinating eyes with lots of different colours and many tiny details. I start by applying some soft washes of paint and then gradually build on the details which bring this eye to life. Feel free to leave comments or questions below.

Thank you Melanie, have fun and take your time. A little tip is to make note for the time for certain sections you may wish to head back too. 😉

Hi just found you on U Tube recently and enjoyed this video . Was the drawing of the cat eye enlarged so it was easy to record or a normal sized cat eye ? I heard you say you used a double 0 brush and a # 5 brush were there others ? And do you not mask out your highlights ? Plus I heard you should only use transparent colours on doing eyes ,what are yours thoughts on this ? Thanks, hope to hear from you real soon . Also from Newcastle ,Ontario, Canada .

Thanks for your comment, you've asked a number of questions, so I'll just go through them in order. - The details on the size of the project and the materials I used can be downloaded from this page: devonartist.co.uk/youtube-downloads/ - The video shows how I deal with the highlights, and no I do not mask them off - This blog post gives even more information on this particular painting: devonartist.co.uk/paint-along-with-paul/ - I use opaque white, and I'm a firm believer that you should paint the way that makes you feel happy, as there are no laws about painting, and you do what works for you. Again, this blog post explains this in more detail: devonartist.co.uk/which-style-of-watercolour-to-choose/ I hope this answers your various questions, and thanks again for following along. Paul 🎨

I have done watercolor for years but still consider myself an intermediate (especially since I have not practiced regularly since starting college). I decided I wanted to build my skill with animals especially fur since I am already pretty good with birds. I just found you and you are the best RU-vid I have found, thank you so much for posting these videos.

Thank you very much Cianna, that is a lovely, kind comment. As a fellow bird, wildlife painter I do see where you are coming from. Developing your fur work is a good way to achieve a much more realistic feel to a painting. It's taken me 40 years to get where I currently am.........I'm still learning! LOL Paul 🎨
