Another reason this is interesting is that we all have ancestors or relatives (however distant) who fought or could have fought there. Knowing their stories helps us to honor those individuals, but also our distant relatives who might have been in that position. Well worth doing more studies. I hope such projects can get further funding.

Emotionant evenimentul.

When I visited Waterloo back in 2017, I came across a guy sitting in a field near Hougoumont, a huge map spread out before him. Tickled by my curiosity, I decided to have a chat with him. Turned out his name was also Phil, he was ex military and was rehearsing a tour of the Waterloo battlefield he was going to give the year after. He happily summed it all up for me, but what got me by surprise back then, and something you also did not mention, was him not knowing about Grouchy’s strawberries ‘incident’ 😉 To this day, if you talk about the battle of Waterloo in a French speaking environment, sooner or later ‘les fraises de Grouchy’ will be mentioned for being the reason why Napoleon mistakenly thought the Prussians were Grouchy’s men and, according to some, lost the battle. This is solely based upon the story that Grouchy turned up late at a critical stage of the battle because he had enjoyed a late breakfast of strawberries. It is probably only an anecdote; let’s face it, scapegoats haven’t been invented yesterday but, according to Phil, there apparently is a scene in a film about that battle in which they kept showing Grouchy eating strawberries, the meaning of which had, until I told him about it, eluded him. Anyway, thanks for this, keep up the good work! (+Waves to ex-military Phil in case you happen to read this 🙂)
@I_Don_t_want_a_handle
@I_Don_t_want_a_handle Год назад
Grouchy, like Ney is much maligned. It was Napoleon who chose him to chase the Prussians, too late to catch them and in the wrong direction. No strawberries were required to cause the battle to be lost. Incidentally Grouchy fought a valiant retreat, defeating the Prussians several times whilst the grande armee threw away it's weapons and legged it.
@Lev_Kornowska
@Lev_Kornowska Год назад
@@I_Don_t_want_a_handle I totally agree with you but to this date, any French person I spoke to immediately greeted me with them fruits...it is deeply engrained in people's minds. But I will say the following: albeit some of them were very good at French history in general, none of them were experts regarding the battle itself. The more expertise you got, the more you understand that it is almost certainly mere scapegoating. Therefore no,, the fruits are not the reason for the loss but it is difficult to accept defeat hands down, the truth was consequently not necessarily something some people were after. Obviously history is not my background. I am specialised in anaesthesiology and intensive care next to being a digital artist. I had to go and check, quickly found out that there is way more to it but still felt it worth mentioning nonetheless. 🙂

He of course like most British Army commanders of the time and indeed 100 years later would syurvive the Carnage they plotted and planned. Returning to the timeline of Wellington its interesting to note his fear of the new industrialising towns and large accumulations of the working classes of the 1820's like Manchester, which he fretted over possible uprisings and revolutions against the Minority aristocratic establishment of England that he was very much party .

It is sad to think of the loss of all those men, and the suffering that they and their horses had to endure for power hungry rulers that couldn't care less for them. True indeed are King Solomon's words, that man has dominated man to his injury.
