(Zone 6A, Illinois) I picked my sugar baby watermelons last year but some came somewhat hollow but still with 1 inch of flesh & seeds, any thought on what was the issue? (Edit) 3:20 you answered my question! Thank you!

Those were two lovely beauties, Christa. Remind me again, did you grow those in containers?
@ChristasGarden
@ChristasGarden 3 года назад
No, those were both grown in the ground. We also had some watermelons planted in containers and they turned out nice. I posted that video back in August. Hope you are doing well Deborah! I can't wait for this winter to be over with.

Hey Christa, I noticed in one of your previous videos you grew "Orange Tendersweet" in a Burpee package. What did you think of this variety, and how does it compare to Orangeglo? Those Orangeglo watermelons you grow look sooooo good!! I can't wait to try one this year. I also got some Klondike seed with your recommendation. Have you ever tried Leelanau Sweetglo? I'm in zone 5b here in SW Michigan, but only because the winter low temperature is colder near -20 on rare occasion. My summers are usually pretty warm (similar temps to your area), and I have about 140+ day growing season between frosts. When do you like to start seeds indoors?
@ChristasGarden
@ChristasGarden 3 года назад
I start my watermelon seeds about 4 weeks before I plant them in the ground. Plants go in the ground usually about a week or two into May. We are frost free here by the beginning of May. The watermelon seeds are started indoors sometime in early to mid April. Klondike is still my all time favorite! No, I haven't tried Leelanau Sweet Sweetglo but I will definitely look it up and check it out. Orange Tendersweet was good, not as good as the best Orangeglo I have ever had. They are worth growing though.

I am so impressed with the way you grow your watermelon. I have tried two years in a row to grow them in containers and fail ever time. Not sure what I'm doing wrong but they only get the size of a golf ball and then they rot off. Any tips from you would be much appreciated!
@valeriesanchez3074

Maybe needs calcium
@ChristasGarden
@ChristasGarden 3 года назад
It could be blossom end rot and calcium could possibly help with that. Sometimes there is enough calcium in the soil but the plant will have trouble using it due to stresses on the plant like lack of water and other environmental problems. You could try a soil test . It could also be a pollination issue. If a flower is only partially pollinated and a fruit starts to form, a lot of times it will grow a little and then rot. Do you have a lot of bees? You might want to try some hand pollinating to help things along.

Hi Christa, do you ever thin out the number of watermelons per plant, or do you just let them set as many they want? I'm interested if restricting the number of watermelons would lead to noticably better/sweeter watermelons. Would love to hear your thoughts on this topic. Thanks!
@ChristasGarden
@ChristasGarden 3 года назад
I don't usually thin them out. My plants typically only produce 1-2 watermelons per plant, sometimes three.

The watermelon is overripe. It is impossible to weigh on such a soft surface.

Hi Christa, I was wondering if you could help me out with something regarding my watermelon plants. Recently the leaves have been curling upward and I'm wondering if you could help me figure out why. Am I overwatering? Underwatering? Inconsistent watering? Or do you think it's something else?

What do you use to fertilize your watermelon and how often
@ChristasGarden
@ChristasGarden 3 года назад
For the plants growing in the ground, I amend my soil with manure, compost, etc, at the beginning of the season. When planting, I add some granular fertilizer and blood meal. Once the plants vine out and start flowering, I fertilize them with a liquid water soluble fertilizer, usually Miracle Gro. I might fertilize them again with a liquid fertilizer at some point in the growing season. I don't always do it a second time. Plants grown in containers will need fertilized more often.

Question for Christa. I have watermelon plants that have tons of flowers on them. Some plants have many small fruit. Have you ever cut down on the fruit per plant? Also I'm setting up drip irrigation. How much water would you think would be a good start point? Thanks.
