"The best skateboard in the world" is not very waterproof.
What are the weak spots and what can you do about it?

Top idea with the silicon. Just got to be wary about water getting kicked up into the motors now. Great vid :)

Thanks Max for posting this!!! A board north of 2K US$ should hold up to the elements better. I'm just waiting for mine to arrive & will be making it more water resistant 1st thing!

"its made by aussies and down there there is no rain, so what do they know" hahaha i love it. yeah it doesn't rain much here in Australia, the only times it rains tends to be in summer or if we get hit by a cyclone. other than that its normally dry as hell. but yeah even here where rain is occasional it would be 10x better if the evolve was waterproof.

And by the way, I can't stress enough how much evolve needs to fix their remote!!! It needs a dead man's switch like the boosted. Its way to easy to hit the throttle by mistake!!!

Thank you for the video! Actually a brilliant idea! I live in Finland and we have pretty much the same conditions as you guys there so I've been experiencing the infuriating problem of the lack of waterproof in the board. I think I'm going to have to go to store and buy some silicone! Have you tried it yet with some more scandinavian conditions? From my pretty short experience due the weather here I've learned that cold isn't a problem at all but even a little bit of water on the road causes a trouble. Does that cover all the holes and make the board atleast almost waterproof? Not like I'd be going to ride it in a bath or something but you know what I mean right? Thank you for the video it was excellent!

@bbanl 7 лет назад
Tuomas Uoti happy it can help you! I haven't experienced any problems after sealing the top plate. The motors seem to be pretty waterproof but I try to avoid wet conditions. But even if it hasn't rained for a few days, the roads remain wet in the winter and this solved the issue for me. I do notice that the battery is affected in freezing conditions and lasts a lot shorter!

Hey bbnal! Love the vids! Keep it up. I have a Boosted V2 on order but I'm thinking of getting an Evolve board. However, I am having trouble choosing and have a few questions: 1. Why should I go the Carbon over Bamboo? Isn't the bamboo more comfortable? 2. What is the ACTUAL range you get on your board? Do you get the 30km? Thanks!
@bbanl
@bbanl 7 лет назад
Juan Ma So Hi Juan, all 3 are great boards but the AT wheels are really a game changer if you want to ride on all kind of roads and terrain. Also the range of Evolve is amazing. To answer your questions, I have never experienced an issue with the stiffness of the carbon board. And I love the design with the battery integrated in the board is so sleek and amazing. But that is looks. I am preparing a side to side comparison of the boards which I will try to upload soon (plus waterproofing the bamboo GT) but I can already say that the bamboo board is a little bit shorter. As I am 193cm I like the extra few centimeters of the Carbon but for a shorter person a smaller board can be preferable as its more compact. The range of the Bamboo is slightly less but I have no real stats on that. Regarding range. I ALWAYS go in GT mode. After a week of getting used to the board you will too. I guess most riders will ride FAST or GT mode. Eco mode is just sooo lame if you are used to GT mode. Compare it with driving in a porsche or Ferrari with 80km/h on an empty highway. You go nuts. In Eco mode I have the tendency to step off the board when going 18 km/h and looking behind/around me a lot as its going so slow. That brings us to the range: in Eco mode you can reach a radius of 45-50km but I wouldn't know. In Fast/GT mode the range is 30km, which is excellent and more than enough for my needs. I read that the boosted boards get 7miles on slow and 4 miles on their comparable GT mode. That is less than 7km and would be for me a no-go even though you can take a spare battery along. I rode the GT around freezing point and the cold definitely eats into the range! I took a 23km trip and had to switch to Eco mode to avoid walking home (that's when I got the above Eco mode experience). I only would use it in emergency or to teach new riders. So in freezing conditions the 30km range of GT mode gets cut to about 18 km but I don't know exactly as I had to go to Eco to get home. The bamboo has a slightly lower range. Maybe 25km in normal GT conditions. Hope this info helps! Both boards are great. Bamboo will give you just as much fun for a much more affordable price. In the end you pay for the more expensive Carbon which is more sleek looks and you get a bit more range but the same top speed.

Have you tried removing the cover of the board since applying the silicone? I almost tried it already but thought to ask first that does the top still come off when unscrewing the screws? I want my board to be as waterproof as possible but I wouldn't like it to be permanently closing the board. Thank you!

The week point in waterproofing is the on/off switch on any of these skateboards. Till you can find a way to waterproof the on/off switch from the outside it will remain the weak point. This has been my experience. I have three electric skateboards and the on/off switch on every one has gone bad do to water. Now I just use a xt60 loop as a waterproof switch.

@bbanl
@bbanl 7 лет назад

Very nice video! Thank you for that! You mention that you ride using the bigger wheels most of the times. Two questions: 1. Is that for slower than riding the normal skateboard wheels? 2. Do you do that because riding normal skateboard wheels on cobblestones is so uncomfortable?
@bbanl
@bbanl 7 лет назад
Hi Volker, The speed doesn't really make a difference. With the AT wheels the top speed is still roughly 35km/h and I am 90+kg. The bigger AT wheels are just so much more comfortable to ride, certainly at higher speeds. Unless you ride on a perfect flat surface like asfalt. Furthermore, the AT wheels are much safer, certainly at high speeds. Just watch Casey Neistat regulary do a face plant on his boosted board with skateboad wheels when the wheels get stuck behind a small crack in the road. My skateboard wheels got stuck once behind a pine cone and also a stone can cause a nasty fall. I first hesitated as I thought the big wheels would take away the skateboard feel but that is not really the case. Off course if you are on a nice flat surface you can do skateboard tricks (breaking out the wheels etc) with skateboard wheels which you can't to with AT wheels but that is not my style so I am very happy with the AT wheels and only use the skateboard wheels for backup if the drive belt of the AT wheels would break.

bbanl Great, thank you very much! I just rang up Evolve, Germany. They told me that the AT Carbon GT is at the moment at over 2k bucks :-(. I think I need time to save the money :-)
@bbanl
@bbanl 7 лет назад
Yes, unfortunately they come at a price. But life is too sort and a fast car is much more expensive and less fun! :-)
@bbanl
@bbanl 7 лет назад
o, and just to complete the picture. Evolve states for all GT boards and versions (bamboo/Carbon/AT/Street) the same top speed (42km/h or 26mph). With my weight my cruising speed is 35-37km/h and uphill it drops to around 30km/h which I find pretty amazing. Having said that, the big difference is the battery life. Evolve has an amazing battery life which really makes a huge difference (Casey Neistat seems always to be out of battery on his Boosted board :-) ). The range on Carbon GT Street is a whopping 50KM! (31miles) Carbon GT AT is 30km/18miles so there is the real difference of using the comfort and versatility of AT wheels. But 30Km is a fantastic range (other boards have around 7 miles and I saw in a review of Boosted that if you use it on the fastest mode it drops to 4 miles). That would be for me totally unacceptable, even if you drag along a spare battery. With Evolve the range is also shorter if you go at top speed (and to be honest, eco mode is sooo boringly slow...) the range drops to about 20 km with the AT, which for me is still enough. The GT Bamboo series are cheaper but there the range is shorter. 35km/21miles for street setup and 21km/12miles for AT setup.
@VolkerSternemann
@VolkerSternemann 7 лет назад
Thanks a bunch! Sounds pretty convincing :-). Tricks are not made for me, really :-). I am far too old for that kind of stuff. Actually I use these things also just to have a fun and comfortable ride to my office if my appointments allow me to do so or to visit some friends. And that's perfect even with the board I already have, except the range, which is about 2 or 3 kilometers too lame. But still this is good to read because in my area we have plenty of sideways for bikes and skateboards and stuff, all made with cobblestones. It feels like breaking the board to ride on them :-).

@bbanl
@bbanl 7 лет назад
Succes!

The new ones seem to be set up better. Mine had MUCH more hot glue to seal up the holes on the underside. Also, my lid had foam under it to give a better seal. I also noticed I have a lot of double sided mounting tape under and around my battery, that I don't see in your video. My cap is attached too.

So did this work after you waterproofed it? Does the lid stay closed well?
@bbanl
@bbanl 7 лет назад
Hi Gary, the lid is perfect. It stays closed, doesn't look different vs before and definitely holds the water out much better than before but I have not had the balls to put a hose on it :-) Also the open area around the charging area are waterproof now. So I feel much more comfortable to ride on wet surfaces but still would not recommend riding in the rain. I do think Evolve could improve their boards by making them really waterproof. By the way, the motors are not the issue. They can withstand the water perfectly. The issue is water entering the internals of the board.

My board was dead for about a week because rain got inside of the lid (shitty design if you ask me) and I was so mad and scared, evolve told me no warranty since I bought it used, (even though I PAID MORE than normal, 2,500 usd because they were sold out forever) and I was very mad. but it started working perfectly, and now it's better than ever, I will remove the griptape and add a new layer of griptape over the entire board covering the entire top part for most waterproofing ability.. hopefully this works.

spellemann h 😀 So far so good! I have been out on wet roads and even off-road in wet conditions and the board was fine. I do want to stress that it gets pretty messy when the streets are wet and muddy as the wheels throw off dirt. The toes of your shoes get muddy and your jeans too so when it's wet, skateboards are not very good for commuting to work. But at least I am not afraid to ruin my board!
@Adrian-yt1vd
@Adrian-yt1vd 7 лет назад
bbanl, so when I buy this board and do the modification. I don't have to worry about commuting in the rain? I want to use this as a daily commute, so it have to be reliable in the rain as well. I live in Norway, so the weather isn't very stable..
@bbanl
@bbanl 7 лет назад
spellemann Hi, I Would definitely not use this board for daily commute in the rain. First of all, boarding in the rain is no fun at all. You will arrive totally dirty at your work with the water plashing up on you from the wheels. Before my adjustments, water would come in everywhere and you would be sure to ruin the board after the first trip through the rain or over too wet roads. I feel now safe to go with the skateboard over roads that are partially wet if by change my son went to school on the board and while at school the roads became wet due to rain. Or, if the roads are still somewhat wet but the rain has stopped. In the end, this board is just not designed for commuting in the rain. And in Norway, you would need snow tires and chains half the year anyway 😜 Lovely country by the way! I will go snow kiting on the Hadangervida early May! ✌️
@Adrian-yt1vd
@Adrian-yt1vd 7 лет назад
bbanl, okay. Thanx for the info! Think I will buy this board anyway because of the wheels. There's a lot of gravel roads here, so those wheels makes a big difference. I have looked at the "Action Blink Qu4tro", since that's water resistant and have motors on all 4 wheels. But since it have normal skateboard wheels I don't think I'm not going to buy that one 😅 nice! I've been kiting there myself, it's really a grate place to kite if you've been doing it for a while. The wind can get very brutal, but if you know what you're doing that just makes it more fun 😄

Victor Treptow they indeed don't claim it to be waterproof and I don't intend to go out in the rain. But before waterproofing the carbon GT it malfunctioned due to water coming in after standing on it with wet shoes while riding on wet surfaces when I had to come home after the rain had stopped. So better be safe then sorry and fix the board
@SeattleRingHunter
@SeattleRingHunter 7 лет назад
Unacceptable on Evolve's design! They should design an inset molded rubber gasket to totally mitigate all concerns for water ingress into the battery electronics bay of this board! At $2,000 I don't need to be fucking around adding RTV "silicon" sealant on such a basic and priority design oversight. Hopefully Evolve realizes the cheap compression foam they used is not sufficient in keeping the battery electronics bay dray and make quick serious improvements to mitigate theses concerns. We want them to succeed in providing a successful product and that is why I encourage them to improve on this matter ASAP! We need more last mile solutions like this for everyone to enjoy. Peace to all and ride safe with a helmet!
@SeattleRingHunter
@SeattleRingHunter 7 лет назад
They should have used a switchcraft or like bran DC barrel power jack with a metal screw tight waterproof cap with an o-ring to seal off any water ingress. Where do these new engineering teams come from any way?!
