In this video I review the ever-growing category of waterproof flooring. This time, we are talking specifically about real wood flooring that touts a water resistant or waterproof technology. I discuss the differences between a traditional engineered wood floor and a waterproof core material. I then talk about some of the potential drawbacks to a waterproof floor and whether I think it is worth consideration when making a hardwood purchase.
I do not discuss any specific brands in this video, and I am not making any recommendations towards any brands. This video was not sponsored by any manufacturer of wood flooring and is for informational purposes only.
Thanks so much for watching and please let me know in the comments any questions that you may have regarding wood flooring. You can also let me know any topics you would like to me to cover in future videos.

I'd like to add that we installed engineered "click lock" hardwood floors (twice), damaged both times by water leak from our building coop's non standard hvac unit. Long story short, water seaped underneath the floor surrounding the base of the unit, causing sections to expand and buckle over a one month period. First time, we got homeowners insurance to pay for replacement (didn't think possible since I thought you needed to have flood insurance, but not the case). Used leftover funds to pay for the a/c replacement. Fast-forward 2 years into summer, a/c unit leaked again! Apparently, old pipes where condensation water exits periodically gets clogged. Now floors buckled again, with black mold coming out of the seems. Well, now we're considering getting porcelain tiles..worry proof against not just water damage, but scratches and dents (which constantly happens with the toddler play). My only concern is the grout which I read in comments may fade and cause corners to chip. I hope not. For the first time in a long time, I was excited going into Floor & Decor, like walking into Toys R Us in the 80s 😄

How do you like the Evertek product in today's world, 2024? Thinking of using it in my new build home for the kitchen area and carrying through to the living areas. Appreciate any input you may have. Quality, look, etc... Thank you!

The problem with these alternative cores is that it becomes more toxic with off-gas

Very informative video, Robert. Thanks. There was a fire in a 2 flat I own and selections need to be made very soon about everything, including floors. Just wondering - what would you recommend for rental units? I'd like something hard (scratch/scuff resistant). Also, I'd like the kitchen the same as the living & dining room if it makes sense to do this in a rental.. Do companies make the same finishes in water proof and not water proof? Or maybe I should just go with a laminate in the kitchen (as there is a slight elevation into it)?

Thank you for your video. I have (1953) original hardwood (sub-floors), looking to install Coretec Pro Plus XL Enhanced vinyl planks. What are your thoughts? Right choice in material? I am also looking to have Mohawk Smart Strand Silk Natural Opulence II carpet installed in the bedrooms. What are your thoughts on the carpet? TIA

Hi Robert, thank you for your videos. Flooret has just come out with a waterproof hardwood. It has a super compressed sawdust as the core. Is that the same as the fiber you speak of in the product on the left of your video?

dont use it its a MDF type product, (sawdust remanufactured into structure) its really been around for years but now is used for cabinets caseing baseboard when painted or sprayed you cant tell what it is ,looks like real solid wood, Im a profesional painter in bussiness for 30 yrs we paint a lot of custom homes and unfortunately many carpenters use this for build outs aoround window frames, if this product ever gets wet it just expands and bubbles and is ruined, its hard to fix we often have to , and we have to power sand the area and then fill with spakling to make it good again before painting, even moisture from a window will cause this problem avoid it like the plague

The Wet Protect technology is exclusive to Mohawk and the brands it owns. Karastan, Pergo, and Quickstep will also feature this technology on some of their product lines as well
