Great, finally an honest independent review from mr turbo lama himself, thanks for this. Looking forward to more on the atom

Shane - I (had) a Wattbike ATOM here in the USA. I can confirm it is a screw mode resistance unit in the front, with a series of magnets. My ATOM lasted a total of 2 rides before there was a component failure (strain gauge, I think) which required sending the whole thing back to the UK for a refund. I use an Elite Drivo as my primary trainer. Vastly prefer being on my own bike with my own components and physical gears with a Drivo.

Look forward to a full review. Are they sending you one anytime soon Shane?

My friend waited 4 months from order to delivery and has sent it back after a week. Some issues you touched on with the gear change and flywheel. Wattbike are aware its not a 100% off the assembly line and there forums sprouting up reporting problems

Did the seat fore aft position have a good range? It's awesome having moving and stationary backgrounds. Your use of the green screen is terrific. Nice review too 👍

I was able to get the saddle into position easily. I didn't check the full range of motion it had though. One for the checklist if I can get a hold of one of these horses myself.

Looked like there was some movement of the saddle/sway of the seat post....

*crickets* from Wattbike so it may be all I get to do on the unit. They're still not here in Australia.. and there's not a lot of talk about them on the Internets.... so we may have already seen peak Atom.

Really curious about the Atom. I hate swapping my TCR in and out of the Kickr so I started looking at options ... do I dedicate a 105 bike to the Kickr or do I invest in a Wattbike Atom? Delayed gear shifting, 170mm cranks and rock solid seat position all detract from the indoor ride experience. I get the impression that the Atom is still more of a gym junkie mount that a serious road rider mount looking for a quality Zwifting station.

What do you think about the stiffness in terms of any benefit to power transfer? Does it help being rock solid? Chris Pritchard reckons the extra stiffness on the wattbike helped with his power numbers. Is it all psychosomatic? (Btw you could see some movement with you putting it through its paces)

Don't make the assumption that just because it is rigid, that it is more efficient. That rigidity may well lead to an odd pedaling technique that actually is more wasteful than a trainer on a rocker plate. Motion on it's own is not a pure indicator of wasted energy. You have to know how and why the motion exists, and whether that actual improves or hinders performance. There is much to test and show with the increased use of rocker plates. My (heavily biased) opinion is that a rocker allows for proper body use in normal uses and more so in sprint efforts, that will be more efficient and give higher max power.
@richardhutchings1980

Chad McNeese those rocker plates look v cool. A bit like the kurt kinetic but with your choice of smart trainer. I see your point

what about the crank length? I ride 175mm cranks but this length is unavailable on the wattbike atom.

Check with WattBike. I’m still trying to get a hold of one for a full Lama Lab test and review.

Have you ridden the updated wattbike? I know you’re not incredibly fond of the first gen, wondering if gen 2 is better? I train 15h a week and want a dedicated indoor setup. Not really into zwift racing, just looking for something convenient that works. I can get a floor model Kickr Bike v1 for $2000 USD or $2400 for a brand new Atom Gen 2

Haven’t had the opportunity. And not likely to. WattBike told me directly years ago they’ll choose preferred reviewers for their new products. Similar to what Garmin/Tacx now do. If I can get a hold of the hardware by other means, I’ll perform my test protocol and present the results.

Surprising product; maybe for gyms etc?

Callum Masson there's no warranty if commercial business buy it. Purely being marketed as a home trainer afaik

Get hold of Matrix - they are the distributors for wattbike now :)

Is it possible to change gear on the drops, say in a sprint, or only possible from the hoods? Also, are you able to specify what "gears" you have (are simulating)? Eg, on TrainerRoad I usually use an 11-23 with a compact, on Zwift I use an 11-28.
@gplama
@gplama 6 лет назад
No changing from the drops that I could locate/find. Not sure about any customising of the gearing. I suspect not.... but that'd be one I'll look into if I can get a hold of one here.

What’s the deal? People love them.... I don’t see the attraction. Bike tech has move well beyond steel frames.

I'm on the fence.... Mine has been pretty good. But... there was one big catch getting mine to read correctly. More soon.

The future. Eventually nobody will have a bike mounted to a trainer. How long before Specialized/Trek/Giant get involved?

I don't think we'll see those brands in the game any time soon. But.... you never know.

I'd love it if someone made a cut down bike that mates to a Kickr and a Climb ... frame/drivetrain/bars - no wheels, no brakes!

The atom weights 44 kg. That's pretty beefy.

Rather use the Atom at home than your own pride and joy carbon road bike.

See my follow up more in-depth review. The Atom performance on Zwift is sub-par.

My advice for anyone seriously considering a Wattbike - AVOID. They have the worst customer service I've ever experienced. Absolute amateurs.
