For me, it is a question of perspective. Legendary pre-update records didn't vanish, we get new challenges, and it doesn't discredit previous records. What made MK8DX's history remains, and it will continue to be written. I welcome the new meta as a wonderful fresh start, full of potentialities.
completely agree. we quite literally have an exact date where wave 4 was dropped so all those legacy time trials still remain just as impressive as they once were in my eyes
Not afraid to say it: Pii is the best content creator this community has right now. The level of quality, the knowledge, the storytelling, it's all so perfect. I really hope the community doesn't take these videos for granted.
Speaking as someone who really only races online and almost never plays TTs, I welcome buffs and a shakeup of the meta. The fact that the meta has shifted to middle weight characters and karts means that there's not as much sameyness in online racing builds and that's awesome. I think a good solution by Nintendo would be to allow players to toggle "legacy stats" at least for time trials or single player modes. That would make for two different leaderboards but it would be a good olive branch to the TT community that's probably responsible for a good half of all man hours ever spent playing this game, lol. Part of me is excited to see where the world records go with buffed vehicles capable of even faster records. But seeing inside drift records and long standing records go down in flames is sad, no doubt.
i love this kind of thoughtful, in depth content you make for mk8dx. it's so refreshing when most other mk8dx content is either tournament clips or how-to's
You can't have it both way. The stat buffs cannot both change the entire game, and as you say later in the video "do nothing." Games update, either track leaderboards pre-patch like many other games do, or adapt. A game should not go stagnant because it makes people have to try again for records.
Thank you for saying this. I like this guy’s video but this felt like such a boohoo whiny moment for nothing. Like just learn the new meta and get better, it’s much more fun to keep things fresh with updates rather than have the same unchanging meta forever. People that had records don’t want to play their favorite tracks anymore because they balanced out the game? Tough luck buddy just suck it up and keep practicing
this maybe effects .00001% of the players (those that hold WRs and are upset). it made the game way more interesting and refreshing, IMO even for most of that very top % of players too. if someone is upset about "having" to grind again, maybe take a step back and realize you don't actually "have to". its a video game and if it's not something thats fun/you dont look forward to, its not an obligation. the same people still have all the WRs anyway. it just gave them something else to strive for in a game I assume they highly enjoy playing since they are putting so much time into it in the first place. 😯 I'm not going to lie though, it does suck for that guy who was a week away from hitting 1000 days. Nintendo could have at least waited a week or two. 😅
Obviously for top players it will take time to get used to the new meta, even if lower level players easily took their longstanding WRs, as soon as the top players adjust, they'll outclass the lower level player's WR by sheer class and experience and skill with the new meta. I sympathise with them for the man hours put into the TT grind, but a change one way or another was needed, Waluigi, Wiggler combo made the game very samey, at least there is more than 1 competitive combo to play if you want to stay meta.
I’d be very surprised if they were to nerf anything. They pretty clearly tried to avoid nerfing Waluigi Wiggler, I think they will continue with buffs if they do any more changes
This is one of the first videos that I watch one night but have to go to sleep so i end it early, but it was so good that I watched it first in the morning. (In short you make high quality content) 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
(Kind tone) I think you need to remember how hyperfocused you are on this specific aspect of the game. It's devastating because it's change, not because it's bad, or even unwelcome. And it's be silly to have different stats for vehicles in races and time trials. After all, TTs are used by many people to practice tracks without CPUs. Outside of intense time triallers, I haven't seen anyone truly upset about the meta changes. It'll be okay
11:05 One of the players on that DK Jungle leaderboard had just prior to the update gotten worldwide tops (.868) using Waluigi Wiggler, which took a lot of effort. Within hours they were pushed out of tops, and within a day they were able to take 2nd Worldwide themself. The top 10 on that track was incredibly refined, but the new combos are just too fast now.
i feel like this MK8 meta is taking away the real fun when competing with global players. Everybody wants to use the best combination because its pretty obvious no one likes losing online. The VR point system online that was originally placed on the Wii shouldn't have been there to begin with, it contributes to the chaotic Meta all together, I mostly prefer a rank system that doesn't require VR points but letting your Overall PlayTime on MK8 determine your rank online. That's something about Nintendo I don't understand. All changes to MK started from MKDS with the infamous broken snake bug online. Instead of fixing the bug, they revamped the entire control surface inputs altogether. They did it to make the game easier but they still implemented competitive/Meta measures that defeated the pupose of the adjustments overall.😡🤦♂
I see both sides, for example, I think that the new karts are far too buffed and feel terrible for people who loaded their records. On the other hand, I’m so glad I don’t see that god awful Waluigi Wiggler anymore, so I’m torn on this change
Really poignant video. I wish more people would make an effort to understand how huge of an effect wave 4 had on the speedrunning scene. I was moving steadily away from the game in 2021, but the announcement of the booster course pass made me excited about the game again. It's ironic that part of this DLC is what finally pushed me to quit the game almost completely... If I seriously grind anything again, whether that be time trials or RTA speedruns, it'll be well after wave 6 comes out. It doesn't feel like there's any reason to achieve anything if it will become irrelevant in a few months. The least I can hope is that the game settles in a spot that's actually more balanced than it began, rather than making time trial combos less diverse than online combos ever were.
And obviously I'm not a top time trialer, but I don't think that matters. These changes affect personal goals as well as tt wr competition, not to mention other aspects of the game like NITA timesheets centered around certain combos (Adam/Jet spent SO much time and effort documenting waluwig times) and RTA speedruns. The community will adapt, and new metas and baselines will settle, but it still just seems so pointless to me.
Dude, I don't do time trials, I just play, and only now did I realize how much this affected previously passionate time trialers who grinded to put out their best work. It's crazy.
@@pianist1562 remember how I said, just before wave 4 released, that I thought Nintendo might add a new character class that could have better stats than Walu/DK/Roy? I realized I technically got that right with all the stat changes to existing classes. I know you’re not really playing but My only hope now, is that they don’t change more sats in the coming waves
The stat buffs are available regardless of owning DLC! The only thing you wouldn't have access to is Birdo specifically, but Yoshi/Peach/Daisy are all available. Well, that and the DLC tracks.
