In this paraglider review, join Flybubble Carlo as he shares with you his opinion on Gin Gliders' new EN C 2-liner wing, the Bonanza 3, featuring Wave Leading Edge Technology and built with Myungjin and Porcher fabrics. To get to know it really well, Carlo flew the Bonanza 3 for over ten hours over several days, in a wide variety of conditions, and with three different harnesses (Advance IMPRESS 4 and LIGHTNESS 3, and Supair DELIGHT 4).
Gin Gliders: "The Bonanza 3 offers a whole new world of flying. Performance and speed has never been so accessible. The Bonanza 3 is Gin’s new 2 liner Sports Class wing for XC pilots featuring our Wave Leading Edge Technology, inspired by the tubercles of the humpback whale. The delaying of the separation point at high angles of attack increases aerodynamic efficiency - meaning you climb faster and with more control."
Designer Gin Seok Song explains the concept behind the Bonanza 3: “The design goal was not to push to the absolute limits of the “C” category, but to make a real XC wing that would be a natural successor to the Bonanza 2. It was also important to consider pilots progressing from high B wings like the Explorer series. By realising the Bonanza 3 as a 2 liner and with the Wave Leading Edge technology from the Boomerang 12, we were actually able to reduce the aspect ratio slightly, which makes the wing nicer to fly and more accessible. Of course, to fly this wing pilots still need to be well-practiced in active recovery techniques for 2 liners."
Gin Gliders state the main advantages of the Bonanza 3 are:
"excellent climbing due to Wave Leading Edge Technology
excellent glide performance, the wing bites into lift and cuts through turbulence and sink
high pitch stability in strong conditions
very stable, especially on bar
efficient steering and fast acceleration on bar
high top speed"
For the materials, Gin Gliders explain that: "Semi-light Myungjin and light Porcher fabrics were selected for the ideal compromise between durability and low weight" for the Bonanza 3.
Gin test pilot Michael Sigel said of the Myungjin fabric: "We tested it for quite some years in Korea and were really happy with the performance, especially because of the weight/durability. It seems like the air porosity is very good, even after many hours. It is a fabric that we developed together with Myungjin and we first used it on the Fuse 3. All in all we are very happy with the fabric... "

Hi Carlo. I read in the manual for the Gin Bonanza 4 and Gin recommend speedbar when on big ears to compensate for a higher AoA. Nice when the conditions is so we struggle to stay under the TMA sealing.
@flybubblecarlo
@flybubblecarlo Год назад
Hi Arne, thanks for commenting! 🙂 You are correct, Gin Gliders recommend that when doing big ears it's a good idea to use some speed bar, to compensate for the higher angle of attack caused by this descent technique, and so reduce the chances of the wing deep stalling. ☑ (I must've misread the manual when I said Gin says don't do big ears with any speed system on, which is incorrect. As this was confusing we've edited this out of the review. Thank you.)

Great review Carlo. I'm sure I speak for a lot of pilots out there when I say how much I appreciate your honest feedback on a variety of wings. Particularly in the new EN C 2 liner category. For me personally, I'm stepping down from an Omega X Alps Glider, and comfort is probably highest on my list for my next glider. So far, the Bonanza 3 is ticking all the right boxes for me, subject to a test flight.

Hey Scott, thanks for commenting! 🙂 I'm glad you're finding these Flybubble reviews helpful. 😊 I know my presentation isn't as slick as some but hopefully some can see past that (and I'm trying to worry less about that) and in the end the content is useful. 🤞 It takes a lot of time to make these reviews, especially since I'm having to learn as I go, making many mistakes along the way. 🤓 For example, this review was filmed over several days and took up about 20 hours of my time to film, before transferring, reviewing, editing, reviewing, re-editing and publishing, then reading and responding to comments. ⏲⏳⌚⌛ But if in the end pilots find it helpful, then I'm happy to do it. 😊

@@flybubbleparaglidingIf it doesn't bother you, I can ask you to answer the questions. Were there any defects with risers (increased A3 wear) or rigid foils during the operation of Bonanza 3? How often does a wing want to collapse and how easily does it get out of such situations? If you've tried Avid or flown nearby, does Avid bonanza 3 lose out in terms of climbing?

Hi Carlo, What do you think of that experimental fabric that Gin has used in Bonanza 3?
@flybubblecarlo
@flybubblecarlo Год назад
Hi Isaac, thanks for commenting. 🙂 In answer to your question about the Myungjin fabric, I think it's great - essential - that at least some paraglider manufacturers invest their resources to keep trying to find better materials, which I'm sure is key for paraglider development - the same as the development of just about anything, I suppose! I'm not sure why you write "experimental" since it seems like it's a well-proven fabric, tested by Gin for years already. For example, Gin test pilot Michael Sigel wrote about the Myungjin fabric: "We tested it for quite some years in Korea and were really happy with the performance, especially because of the weight/durability. It seems like the air porosity is very good, even after many hours. It is a fabric that we developed together with Myungjin and we first used it on the Fuse 3. All in all we are very happy with the fabric... " Like everything, only time will tell - the same for all materials ever used to make paragliders with! 🤓

@flybubblecarlo Год назад
ps. Longer answer: As we already don't have enough spare time or money to buy, test and review all of the gear we already offer - as seen the Flybubble website - probably not. If we had more spare time and money then we'd be able to test and publish even more free Flybubble reviews of flying gear than we already do... but even then some will still ask why we didn't test something else anyway. 😏

In case you're interested, the primary reason we test gear is so we get to know it and so can best advise Flybubble customers on which is the right and best gear for them, as part of our Flybubble MATCH service ( flybubble.com/flybubble-match-service ). The Flybubble reviews we publish are just a happy by-product of this process, sharing some of our professional opinions for free with the freeflight community. 🪂 We only have enough spare resources to publish about 10% of the gear we actually test. Plus, mainly due to resource constraints, the reviews we publish are only a small % of what we have to say about the gear. To say everything we have to say would take far too long! 😉

How do you rate this Bonanza 3 compared to an Alpina 4 in turbulence and strong conditions ? Moreover, I usually use the rear risers (C) on my Mantra 6 to take off in windy conditions to control the shoot. Impossible to do with a 2 liner ! What do you suggest for widy take offs (soaring or thermal). Thank you !
@flybubbleparagliding
@flybubbleparagliding 9 месяцев назад
From my testing of both, the Bonanza 3 is not much more demanding than the Alpina 4 in strong conditions, if at all. It's more solid, with a significant improvement in performance. I prefer using a semi-cobra launch for strong conditions i.e. brining the wing up from the edge of the wind window, as you'll see me doing in some videos. Flybubble Carlo
