In this video, I show my process for carving a leaf out of wax. This piece will later be cast in metal using the lost wax casting process. I'm using hard green jewelry carving wax for this model and odorless mineral spirits to polish the finished carving.

I lost it when I saw the Q tip in the flex shaft lol. That's such a smart idea - stealing it

you should do a spoof video where every time you cut away then cut back another one of your fingers has a Band-Aid on it, until finally, you are holding the wax piece with a pirate hook

Very nice work! As a new wax carver myself, what are you using as a solvent to polish the wax that is on the cotton swab?? Does a great job without being overly aggressive??
@GraceNoteForge
@GraceNoteForge Год назад
Thank you! I normally use odorless mineral spirits to polish. It's not as aggressive as lighter fluid and leaves a really nice surface finish 😊

That's beautiful. How do you make copies for multiple casts? Because there is a chance of not getting a good one. Then it's gone. Can you show that? And what Dremel are you using?
@GraceNoteForge

Thank you! I have a separate video on my channel where I made an RTV mold for this carving in order to make copies! Here's the link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nySVE1mlGa8.html And I used a jewelry flex shaft to carve this piece 😊

Thank you. Im not sure what brand my flexshaft is but it has a 1/4HP motor with variable speed (500-22,000 RPM) if that helps.

Lovely work. I wanted to ask about the wax carver pen you use for the bail. It doesn’t look like the battery wax pen so can I ask what pen you used for this? Thank you!
@GraceNoteForge
@GraceNoteForge 2 года назад
Thank you! That was an old wood burning pyrography pen that I used. It works well for wax too.
@sachaknight1414
@sachaknight1414 2 года назад
@@GraceNoteForge Thank you for getting back to me. I was wondering about using a pyrography pen, but was worried that it would be too hot as the heat range is higher than that of a wax pen, so thank you for confirming that it is what you used :) I feel like the wax pools and drips nicely off the pyrography pen wire nib kind of better than the solid nibs on an electric wax carver pen
@GraceNoteForge
@GraceNoteForge 2 года назад
@@sachaknight1414 happy to help! 👍 mine has an old power supply with it to dial in the temperature. Without a way to adjust the temperature, it might be a little tricky to use for wax.

Thank you! Its an old pyrography pen that's normally used for wood burning. With an adjustable power supply, it can be dialed in to work really well with wax.

Now I understand my problem! I need to add wax and not take off it. 😂 Thank you. For polishing do you use something on the cotton? Acetone maybe? 🤔

Question, I want to start wax carving simple jewelry, may I only use an electrical carving pen (various ends) or do I need other tools? I have no space in my appartment.

Can i ask, when you polishing the wax, do you add anything into the Q-Tip ? Or just let the friction do the magic ?

It has some odorless mineral springs on it. It helps with polishing the wax.

Is that little tool you’re using at 6:19 apart of a wax carving set? If so, how is it smoothing the wax out so nicely? Is it just the wax itself that makes it easy to work with? Haha I’ve got lots of questions!
@GraceNoteForge
@GraceNoteForge Год назад
Yep, that tool is from a stainless steel wax carving set. I was scraping over the wax to try and make it as smooth as possible, then I switched to sand paper to blend out the scrape makes :)

Hello dear! Great work 😍😍 👏👏👏👏👏 may I ask you what kind of liquid you used in the video at 9:47 to polish the surface? Seems like the Q-tip is soaked in something liquid? Or did you use only Q-tip?
@GraceNoteForge
@GraceNoteForge 2 года назад
Thank you! The Q-tip has odorless mineral spirits on it. It slightly dissolves the wax and helps with polishing. 🙂
@deathin1119

@@GraceNoteForge oh! I see, thank you so much for your kind reply! ❤️❤️ I am afraid if it bothers you but may I ask you one more and last question? Well, do you linse the wax after the liquid is applied? I read that it may cause damage when casting it with the residue of the liquid! Or do you wait until it dries up and dont wash it away with water?
@GraceNoteForge
@GraceNoteForge 2 года назад
@@deathin1119 I normally just let mine air dry first without washing it and I haven't noticed any issues while casting :)

if someone - meeeere hypothesis - couldn't afford the special wax for casting... could him achieve decent results with another wax? Like paraffin wax, sacrificing candles? while taking into account the difficulties due to the different consistency of the waxes, of course
@GraceNoteForge
@GraceNoteForge Год назад
Yes, paraffin wax would work for lost wax casting BUT paraffin wax by itself is really brittle and not easy to carve by hand. To fix that though, It CAN be mixed with other things to make it better suited for carving (something I've experimented with in the past). Melting some paraffin wax with a bit of glue stick (around 10% by weight) will give it some flexibility and make it easier to carve. Also, adding a crayon to the mix will give some color and help with seeing the detail of the carving. It's been a while since I've done this but I remember it working pretty well 😊

Are there 3D wax printers out today powerful enough to do this same type of work?
@GraceNoteForge

I haven't tried printing anything this big before but I would imagine a resin printer would easily be able to print something similar in castable resin. 😊
