Sprue wax is really nice to use with the help of a mandrel - I find that when I want to make round shapes, sprues are super nice, or even to make a bezel! Usually with such soft wax like that I recommend joining with dental tools too

Fantastic video! As a self-taught (trying) wax caster, you hit all the points I’ve been trying to refine or answer for myself. Always good to see how or what others use to achieve results. So happy you are back. Very informative, no matter what subject you are illustrating. I also use a oversized baking tray under my top drawer of a roll top desk as my bench. Not perfect but I have adapted it and it works for me. Thank you! ❤️⚒️❤️

Great video. Thanks. I have the same problem with the Arbe wax pen. I lightly scraped the copper inside the white handle and it helped if I get the tip in the perfect spot. Also, I ordered a new tip and it is larger which may be giving better contact; however, it is still touchy. And the handle got hot when I dialed 60. 50 was okay. I like your cheaper, battery operated one. Will give it a try.

First off, you are one of the Jewelers on RU-vid who has helped me figure out what I needed to start silversmithing because you're so detailed. So thank you for that. I really like the look of wax carving, and I've saved this video for when I want to start. My question is what are all the tools you need for the casting process itself and where did you get them. I saw you made a short video, but can you make another showing the process from start to finish, all the tools/equipment, and how each step is done? I'd also be interested in knowing what type of environment it can be done in, does it need to be like a garage? Or can it be done in a room? Thank you!

Thank you this is helpful! I do regular silversmithing but i wanted to make a cast ring for my cats ashes , i wanted a super textured style with granulations.... so the idea was to put the ashes in resin.. .. but what i am not sure about... if i have the ring in wax and carve a round hole to place the resin and ashes ,( once casted obv lol,) or make an outside separate wax bezel then stick it to wax ring. Have you ever had to do anything like that?
@bencahill5132

Only thing I haves used soft ( sticky wax) waxes for is sprue mounting, adding sprues in difficult spots as I can simply mold it body temp from hands, but the best use I found was adding fillets to sprue joins to the model, because when molten it has such low viscosity compared with blue and green it will " flow " around sprue joins so easy to make smooth molten metal transition areas to help avoid porosity and air from sharp edges around your sprue making its way into your model. Lol so that's almost no help when you have a boxful of pre formed "ropes".

Just discovered your account a few days ago and I’ve been watching your videos on repeat! 😍You got me so excited to start trying doing Jewelry myself! more like a hobby since I love Jewelry and I can’t afford solid gold rings myself I thought I just do my own and save some money while enjoying a new hobby. My question is how expensive is it getting your wax ring castored in 9k gold? I can’t find any information online - hopefully you can help a girl out. Might be too expensive- then I won’t get into it and buy rings instead lol! Anyways, love your account and your voice and your being in general! Very warm and kind soul 🫶🏼 keep it up!

Oh my goodness, thank you so much for this sweet sweet comment! 🥹💜 I’m so glad I’ve inspired you to try something new!! It really is SO MUCH FUN! 🥹 May I ask what country you’re in? If you’re in the EU you can have pieces cast in 9k, if you’re in the states they don’t sell 9K. If you’re in the UK or a country that can cast in 9k, a typical size stacker ring would probably be about £120 or $160 in cost alone. If you go up in weight, let’s say a woman’s signet ring size ring, the cost of the gold can easily be around £280 or $400ish. I hope this helps!!

Great advice! I've been watching vids on the different wax types to try and understand what I need. I'm sorry that your Arbe wax pen isn't cooperating. I've heard good things about that brand, in general. I do think I"ll order the battery pen and basic tools for melting and building you suggest. Thank you for answering my question about the wax ring spinning mandrel. I've located a couple now that I know what they are called and need to decide which way I'll go. I hope my creativity holds out until I can get things together! I try and keep a sketch book handy, but I'm no artist so we will see how far I can go. Have a great weekend!

Quick question tho, I have a 3D pen at the ready, and I heard some people started using 3D printers to produce models. WAX is usable when it comes to jewelry molding. What about PLA? @Eromasin

Hey! I've just started wax carving rings and I have a quick question. When you make a design, do you need to make a copy of it in every size, or do you have a method so you can make it once, duplicate that, then easily resize? I've seen some jewellery people who I know cast them with wax with 20+ different sizes. Surely they can do the same master design 20+ times?
@therealmccoyxxx
@therealmccoyxxx 8 месяцев назад
It would be easier to carve each master in each size, cash them and make a mold from the cast. Then you can just use a wax injector and the mold to replicate each ring.

Hello! I'm curious about ring sizes. If I create one ring design in one size and later want to make more of them, each in a different size, do I need to create each of them separately from wax, or can I work with just one piece and adjust the size individually? I'm new to this and still learning, so I apologize if this is a silly question :D
@therealmccoyxxx
@therealmccoyxxx 8 месяцев назад
Yes, once you make your ring in wax and cast it, you will need to make a mold from that cast and use a wax injector to make more. You will need to create each individual size in wax and cast them and then make molds and inject them with wax to get a replica. Hope this helps.

I just want to know what happens to the wax after we pour the gold over it?
@therealmccoyxxx
@therealmccoyxxx 8 месяцев назад
You don’t pour the metal over the wax. After you make your mold it’s best to use a steam dewaxer to melt almost all the wax from the invested mold. After that you run the mold through a kiln on a burnout schedule and it vaporizes all the remaining wax leaving a hollow mold. That’s when you pour your metal in under vacuum.

That makes sense. But it’s a weird soft wax, I don’t know how to explain it other than it’s almost like candle wax? It melts super easily and doesn’t really bind back together. I guess comparing it to candle wax is the best I can explain it. 😊
