Hi, I wonder if you can help me as I'm having trouble with patchy finishing on a table I've made and I have sealed it but just can't get it to a uniformed finish. The wood is Acacia,thanks.

Great help thanks for taking the time. I used black bison wax (Luberon) clear on a pallet table I had first stained. The "clear" wax dried a pale yellow colour in the rough parts of the boards and sitting on top of the dark stain it looks a bit yuk. Any advice on getting it out of all the pits in the wood? Newbie.

Paint thinner (aka mineral spirits) and a scrub brush and rags. Watch the "Too Much Briwax" video. I remove excess was from a table top with this method.

Did you just let the first coat dry (how long?), then apply a second coat and then buff OR buff after each coat? Great finish though.
@TheBriwaxGuy

The solvent dries really fast. You can almost buff out the first end of a board by the time you've waxed to the other end. I wouldn't bother buffing the first coat applied to raw wood. You can buff the second coat to see how it looks but while you're putting on a second coat and decide you are doing a third I wouldn't bother. You need only buff the final coat. On the rough timber you'll knock out a lot of excess wax in knot holes and such so if you are using a rotary brush wear glasses.

Could I ask what applicator you're using? Normal sponge with handle? Feel like it will rip over time.
@TheBriwaxGuy

That is a hex foam applicator pad that we have made for us for resale. The handle is really firm but the applicator surface is softer. You can find them at Briwax-trg.com. It does get torn up much quicker when waxing rough timber than when waxing sanded surfaces. I typically use this sponge along with an old stiff 3"-4" paintbrush to get the wax into all the nooks and crannys of old rough surfaces like reclaimed beams. Waxing very rough timber with a rag runs the risk of big splinters soaked in wax and solvent poking through the rag and into your fingers. (very painful). Even as the sponge gets ripped up it still works well for the rough stuff.

Interesting accent! Where is it from? Sounds southern US but hints of English?
@TheBriwaxGuy

You've got an ear for accents. I'm originally from Georgia but I've moved a lot as an Army brat. I found myself running a wood shop staffed with all English staff and in my efforts to be understood while teaching them furniture making they seem to have rubbed off on me a bit.

Sorry Sam. I make furniture for a living not films so I'm not so good at that part. Just trying to answer questions. I'll tone in down in future.

Would staining with a light grey stain on new wood first before waxing help to give a similar look as this?

No

Time is the only subsitute for time, but honestly if you leave some wood out from spring till fall outside in the sun and rain it will grey up beautifully

Do you recommend the original or Toluene-free product for kitchen cabinets?

Health Hazards of Toluene You can be exposed to toluene by breathing it in, getting it on your skin, getting it splashed into your eyes, or swallowing it. Symptoms of toluene exposure include: irritation of the eyes and nose; weakness, exhaustion, confusion, euphoria, dizziness, headache; dilated pupils, lacrimation (discharge of tears); anxiety, muscle fatigue, insomnia; numbness or tingling of the skin; dermatitis. Toluene exposure may cause liver and kidney damage. Toluene affects the central nervous system, eyes, skin, respiratory system, liver, kidneys. Breathing high levels of toluene during pregnancy has been shown to result in children with birth defects and to retard mental abilities and growth. There is evidence that exposure to toluene at work is associated with spontaneous abortion. High concentrations of toluene, usually from use in a confined space or unventilated area, can cause loss of consciousness, respiratory depression and death. Long term and repeated workplace exposure to toluene affect the central nervous system.

Can I apply Briwax over Mixwax tung oil finish?
@TheBriwaxGuy
@TheBriwaxGuy 3 года назад
Sure. Just make sure the last coat of oil is dry. Oil provides very good water resistance but a wax topcoat will give the surface a much silkier feel. I always finish up oil finishes with a Briwax topcoat.

I used Tudor Brown. Sorry for the late reply. I've been really busy in the shop lately.
