Good job! This was one of the first books my priest had me read as a catechumen because I came to Orthodoxy via an ascetical search that lasted about 8 years.

This book is a very condensed version of the Philokalia in my humble opinion.

I continue to be happy you exist. IMHO it'd be good to change the thumbnails of this and the previous video, they just have the same undifferentiated title graphic at the moment.

I struggled with this one. It's a good book and I definitely wouldn't dissuade anyone from reading it. I just found it...hard line? I don't mean by that "extremist", just tough medicine to swallow. It may have been the bit about only having one cup of coffee that hurt the most :)

I've said in other videos that I've noticed that the smaller the book the more intense the content. I think that's because in books like this it's distilled down to its most potent form, much like a good cup of coffee, if you want a smooth cup, you make an Americano. If you want that harsh hit, you go for the espresso 😁

I love this book, but you need humility to get anything from it. It's so easy to feel rebellion creep up.

Great overview of a great book. I have been reading it a chapter each evening, and then rereading the last two or three chapters (I always glean something new--and convicting!). It is a challenging book to press through. Orthodox Gardener started a chapter-by-chapter series of reflections on it but fizzled out after just a few. I laughed when you asked, "Are you just done with the Ladder of Divine Ascent?" Man, I have tried to read that over Lent a couple times but go shipwreck after a week or so. maybe next year? But for now, The Way of the Ascetics is working and doing its housecleaning work on my soul.
