Glad you appreciate Waylon. He absolutely is a legend and an icon, and he was the pioneer in artistic freedom for an artist with the over controlling record companies. Nobody holds a candle to Waylon. His love story with his wife Jesse Colter is as iconic as Johnny and June Cash’s. Although Waylon and Jesse’s is overlooked most of the time. Johnny Cash and Waylon were roommates early on in their careers. Also if you didn’t know he was playing Bass for Buddy Holly, and he was supposed to be on Buddy’s plane when it crashed. But The Big Bopper was sick, and Waylon gave his seat up on the plane and rode on the band bus with no heat. Love love love Waylon. His voice is unique. His son Shooter is carrying on the family tradition, as his Mom Jesse has a beautiful voice too.

Thought he gave up the seat to Ritchie Valens (who was sick). The story goes when Waylon went to walk away, Buddy joked “I hope your old bus breaks down,” to which Waylon replied, “well I hope your old plane crashes.” Waylon struggled with guilt over his last words to Holly for a while but ended up becoming a legend in his own right. Transformed the sound of country music.

Guy, Waylon and Willie are two of my all time heros! Waylon was a badass! He was so fed-up with Nashville over producing his music, he pulled a pistol on a producer for f…ing with his music. He left Nashville, and headed to Willie ranch to start recording his music. All hit makers. To watch him play it seems just effortless!

Waylon's guitar playing & his band was the genesis of the outlaw movement is the main reason why Waylon left Nashville - they' the studios' wanted him to use session players & Waylon said "they come to here me & my band-NOT your guys" Waylon is lead guitar & a great guitar player!!! I am 74 & have been listening to Waylon since 1972!!! Waylon is forever!!!!!

Waylon Jennings is my favorite! He played bass for Buddy Holly and was supposed to on the plane that crashed. Before Buddy Holly The Big Bopper and Richie Valens board the plane they were cracking jokes. Buddy told Waylon he hoped the bus froze. Waylon told him well I hope your plane crashes. He lived with that for the rest of his life and for a long time he blamed himself. His music is absolutely amazing for a man with 21 year drug habbit and for 10 years he was spending $1500 a day on Cocaine. His wife Jessie saved him. He got clean around 1984 cold turkey locking himself in a house in Arizona. My favorites are Ladies love outlaws, If I can find a clean shirt with Willie Nelson, Bob Willis is still the king and Trouble man. Yes his guitar skills are amazing. You need to watch him live.

@@Teresia12 Thanks Teresia. He was born in Littlefield but did not stay there long. Houston was his “stompin’ grounds”. In the 60’s and 70’s, Houston was a mecca for Country music, many great artist was from there and, surrounding areas; thus many claimed Houston as home when not touring. I was blessed to be a part of the Country Music scene in the 80’s between being on the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo committee and working with radio stations. When Buddy Holly wanted to move to New York to produce music his band, the Crickets, didn't want to make the move and quit on him so Buddy asked Waylon to join him and play base with his band. Waylon said "Buddy I don't play bass guitar" Buddy told Waylon that "it's just the first four strings of a guitar". Waylon later attributed his style of playing to the time he spent playing bass for Holly. He was also the first artist signed by Holly and they recorded Waylon's first hit 'Jolie Blon'. Waylon's later band was called the Waylor's and the guy playing Harmonica on this song was Don Brooks, one of the best, and the guy on Steel Guitar was Ralph Mooney, hands down the best SG picker ever. He was with Waylon for 20 years after getting fired by Merle Haggard after he got cabin fever at a hotel and tried to steal Hag's tour bus during a snowstorm. This song and the album of the same name is one of the most significant ever made. Waylon had had a string of hits with RCA but the label wouldn't let him record with his own band. That's how it was in those days. Studio musicians were assigned to artists not picked by them. But Waylon was always an Outlaw at heart and nonconformist. So Waylon renegotiated his contract when it came up for renewal to have control of his music and musicians. He changed the way music was made and gained control of his music. He wanted to capture that sound that they developed on the road. This song will be 50 years old come Dec 2022 and presented the world with a whole new hard driving kind of country music: Outlaw Country. Waylon gave it the sound, the look, and the attitude. He could sing any song and sing it well, whether it was Fleetwood Mac's "Rhianna" or the Beatles "Norwegian Wood". Some of the song favorites of this lifelong fan are "Honky Tonk Heroes - Black Rose - Cedaretown,GA - Willie and Laura May Jones - Just To Satisfy You - Stop The World and Let Me Off - and - Ain't No God In Mexico. Anyone of those are some fine picks but there is a helluva lot more. I personally have over 300 of his recordings in my music library including a jingle for Coca-Cola by him. In my estimation Waylon Jennings is the greatest singer of American music that has ever lived. Period. As for that train sound you heard well there's a little ditty called '"Waymores Blue's" 🎵Well, I woke up this mornin' it was drizzlin' rain Around the curve come a passenger train Heard somebody yodelin a hobo moan Jimmy he's dead, he's been a long time gone Been a long time gone, a long time gone... ...a long time gone🎵

For sure Waylon is timeless, and as a resident Waylon head let me learn you some things. One of the many aspects of the outlaw movement was wailing using his own road band. This includes Richie Albright on the drums driving the whole tune, Ralph Mooney on the steel guitar playing Melody throughout the entire song, I'm Waylon playing lead on the electric guitar. He also doing his own harmonies on the vocals, this is especially present on the last verse where he pushes it to another level. During the seventies he's co-producing and putting in a lot of his own flavor by hand into the albums and this is really present in this song. A musical genius ahead of his time. Whoop whoop whoop

For vocals equal to this, listen to the album performance by Waylon on "Delia's Gone." Funny you put him on a level with Dolly. From about 1970-2024, Waylon and Dolly have been my favorite male and female Country Music singers. We both rank them at the top. I rank Elvis, Charlie Rich and Tom Jones up there with Waylon (but I'm classifying Charlie Rich not in the country pocket, but in soul, blues, rhythm and blues, jazz and rockabilly because he put his heart and soul into that music and not the bland countrypolitan they boxed him into). If you want to check out what I'm talking about, look on RU-vid for "Feel Like Going Home: the Essential Charlie Rich). For a particular song, listen to the demo version of Feel Like Going Home. It reveals the greatness of his singing, piano playing and the song he wrote.

That’s so awesome. I hope my children and grandchildren appreciate my Waylon albums, along with many more of the record collection. I treasure them. I grew up with Waylon, and although my kids know him as they grew up listening to him with me. But when George Strait and Alan Jackson came onto the scene, although they’re great and I love them, my kids gravitated to the then newer country. Which they consider classic country, it is, but to me. Classic country is Waylon, Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, Tom T Hall, George Jones, Tammy Wynette, Mac Davis, Don Williams, Hank Sr, GlennCampbell, Roy Clark, Buck Owens, Loretta Lynn, Conway, etc. so I’m sure my parents since of classic country is much different and older than mine. Waylon (& Willie) were pushing the "If you ain't made it by 40" rule, when they went "Large", bucking Nashville with their outlaw brand of Country. Some of their tunes address this head on, like Waylon's "I Don't Think Hank Did It This Way" (always loved the line, "I've see the world with a five piece band, lookin' at the backside of me") and "Don't You Think This Outlaw Bit's Done Got Out Of Hand", inspired by a bust. Might be time to do "Willie, Waylon and Me". To call David Allan Coe an outlaw might be an understatement. (Note: The commercialization of the outlaw era might best be illustrated by the making of the movie "Urban Cowboy" in 1980, imo.)

If you recall the first Waylon song was my bottle bribe. I told you Waylon was a legend. I actually saw him in concert in Huntington WV in 1979. That’s country! That’s the shit you wanted to learn about. that what country music is made of.

This video is actually perfectly timed. Tomorrow (Feb. 24th) would be my Daddy's birthday if he were still here. Waylon was one of my Daddy's all time favorites. He always loved the song Amanda for obvious reasons. Could you try that song? If not and it just goes on the list, I still appreciate it. Thanks for this reaction, loved it as always.

Waylon, Merle, Willie, Kristopherson, and Cash, are Outlaw Country. They did it their way, refusing to allow Music Companies the rights to their Creative Freedom...Kistofferson, not a singing Icon, he is a writing icon...They were all friends, and partied like no tomorrow.. They grew in the music, the pain, longing, defiance and love, written and sung in their songs....Poetry of the common man...
