Them fellas were just hammered as all get out, yet still throwed down. Damnit all, Id give a whole lot to go back and watch this show. Legends. All of them.
so many here miss the point when they try to paint Leon’s reaction to Waylon as either green eyed jealous or slammed drunk..Leon, the master of time & space, was looking on in happy awe & quiet ecstasy at the collection of spirits that were singing & playing together right then/right there/right now.
I have seen Leon Russell three times in my life once in 1970 second time was in 1973 and the last time was in 1994, and one more time was in 9 2013. So it was four times. I have never seen him drunk before. He is definitely three sheets to the wind. But he was with his buddies there, he was just really drunk. And you look at Willie Nelson and he's laughing, because they're just no denying it he was three sheets to the wind. Leon Russell is and will always be the master of space and time.
Is no one going to mention the fact that Waylon’s eyes look like a cocaine road map . Everyone of them were buzzed up on the music and the extracurricular activities. Great Times.
A piece of Americana right there. Leon, Willie, Waylon, Doug Kershaw drinking lone star beer and performing an excellent drunken free-wheeling version of a classic on a hot sweaty East Texas summer night!
I worked in the studio with Leon. What a joy! He was auditioning Black Grass for the Carney tour at January Music & Sound in Dallas. All had gone next door for a beer. I had to tear down the studio mics and headsets, rewind the tape and shut down for the night. Leon had stayed behind to sit at the Yamaha Baby Grand to tinker with a tune he'd been working on. With all away except we two, I asked him to please play A Song For You and he did. I was an audience of one. It really brought tears to my eyes. He was so sincere and looked my way as he sang. WOW. Everyone came back, hugged and went home. I cried again when I realized I could have recorded it but had just shut everything down! What a gentleman he was. And what an influence on American Music. Tim
I never noticed Leon Russell waving Waylon Jennings onstage that night until someone on here mentioned that and i watched it again and sure enough he did!!,Absolutely love this video and awesome performance. 😊
I've probably watched this 100 times. Loved Leon being shocked that Waylon knew the words. And the Ragin Cajun is always on point. with that fiddle. Good guy too.
Betcha never thought country/western music could be Punk rock! Ain't nothin' more punk rock than Willie, Waylon and Leon. That fiddler is shredding too btw!
I know I’m late to the party, but I keep listening to the way Leon lingers over a lyric. His way somehow fills up all the empty spaces. It’s fascinating. Cheers to you if you are watching this?
@@aaronrider4051 Merle & George definitely... Merle's voice especially 😍 Willie's voice too, so pure, love it when he sang City of New Orleans with the highway men live I was captivated... , but nothing beats Waylon for me though, he's just the whole package 😍
@@Factory_Muff Leon gives Willie a look saying...that sumbitch can sing can't he? Willie just grins back in agreement. These old boys were straight wasted here. But damn they sound good. 😎
Waylon, Willie, Doug, and Leon doing Hank in 1974... This is perfect musical heaven! I wish I could go back to that time - the most exciting time in the history of country music. I saw Waylon, Willie, and Doug almost every time they came to the Chicago area from the mid-70s through the 90s.
I wish I could go back to the beginning of the 70s and instead of listening to pop music like I did I wish I'd got into Country Music a damn site earlier
I saw Willie and Leon dual headline at the San Diego County Fair in the late 70's. I'd never heard of Leon Russell. I bought an album the next day. What a fabulous, unique talent.
These guys were so unpretentious. Leon was so happy and totally unbothered. They all admired each other. Leon was funny just standing there with his belly hanging out. ❤️
What a concert being able to listen to Waylon, Leon, and Willie together, not to mention the awesome supporting cast! This was my era, I would have given anything to have been there!!
He did this every year almost. Last one I heard about was in Luckenbach. Ray Wiley Hubbard sang Up Against The Wall Redneck Mother. at the "picnic". Austin Texas was the place to be back then but they very that made Austin great ruined it. I lived there around 1989 and once day I counted how places had live music that night and I counted 200.
thats whats called a tight band .. love how Leon signals to the fiddle player 2.09.. your up next boy !...., Willy Nelson just shreds that acoustic.. not a split second of any of that was rehearsed, just pure talent
That ‘74 Picnic was an absolute BLAST !! These guys were all favorite of mine, and the Pure Energy of them and all the rest, coming together for three solid days of music, partying, and assorted hell-raising, is one of my most cherished memories.
Ma loved the Ragin' Cajun n' Daddy would hum Blue Skies when he was doin fine. I love all the old and new greats. When people say they don't like country, they just haven't sat down and sucked down some Hamm's or Lone Stars at their local honkytonk two steppin' their way to heaven to beat the devil.
Our family had started working with Willie about a year and a half before this Picnic. I was ten. Family still travels with Willie. Long strange trip it's been
boy i love my parents more and more. they played the best music when i was a kid. and i listened to all these guys as long as i can remember. i was 6 when this came out
Anymore of this wonderful concert ? This was the nucleus of outlaw country music right there. So much rock n roll. Great stuff. How is Waylon Jennings not in the rock n roll hall of fame ?
yea you right! having been able to go to 5 willie picnics thru the years, every one is different. OBTW if you are a Robert Earl Keen fan, you may know the story of his "borrowed" car cathing on fire during this 3 day festival. LOL - Old School good times. -LEG
I was lucky enough to interview Willie at his July 4th picnic in 1997. Leon Russell played. Hot jam at the end. Ray Price, too. Both gone. Those nights....magic never to be repeated. As American as blueberry pie with Blue Bell vanilla ice cream on top. Yes,sir....
Back in the 70 s we would go to the bars outside of Austin and see these guys play all night for a couple dollars and also Willies 1976 Fourth of July picnic in Gonzales Texas what a weekend
Yeah, I wish he would've looked after himself and stayed in shape a bit longer. He was still pretty young. Probably didn't have a proper diet. But I like Leon in every way. Because it's Leon.
@@toastertwo1602 Leon hit the genetic jackpot with his musical talent, but I'm shocked at how fast he aged. This was only 4 years after the Homewood Sessions. He was about 32 in this video, but looks in his 40's.
OMG... I was at Leon's concert at Hermitage Landing In the early 80's. I was maybe 9 yrs old. Fast forward 40 years. Seen Leon at the Magic Bag in Royal Oak, MI. Was able to get the man to sign my ticket from 40+ years ago and also my ticket for that nights show..
At one time, Rusty and Doug Kershaw Lived on a houseboat near the Lacassine Bayou. Jeff Davis Parish Louisiana. In the 50's my dad taught them driver's education. At one time a School Boat would pick up children who live on the bayou near Lake Arthur Louisiana. One weekend I was lucky enough to run into Doug at Gary's Boat Landing. He and his mother were heading down the bayou for a ride. Doug had on a Canary Yellow leisure suit. Great talent. We are proud of the Kershaw's. Many people made their living hunting ducks, fishing, and picking moss along the bayous. Moss was used to upholstery car seats back in the day. I'm 74
Doug’s entire featured performance at this picnic used to be on RU-vid! Insanely great, better audio too. “Diggy Diggy Lo” “Bully of the Bayou” “Orange Blossom” and I think “Cajun Stripper Queen”
@@MissDaisyDuke01 Dunno where it went! 😢😔😣 Insanely great performance. Best “Diggy Diggy Lo” ever. He took off his shirt for the encore 🥳 Yeah, OBS was incredible. Doug’s style is all his own. He plays double stops all up and down I’ve never heard from a fiddle. His intonation is so amazing considering how far he stretches phrasing and embellishments. Leon was so cool, totally drunk 🥴, messing with Doug, putting his hat on his head while he was trying to play, it falling in his eyes.
@@barrysmith8920 I couldn't agree with you more. I remember watching it on here, a few years ago and it stayed with me EVER since. If DK is not in the Guinness Book of Record, he SHOULD be!!! To pick up on what you were saying, true enough. I honestly don't believe anyone else, can do what he does with a fiddle. Will probably never see again in my life time, anyways. I mean, how many fiddlers actually burn out their strings, CONSTANTLY, right? .... Go Doug! 🔥🔥🔥 Please anyone out there, if you have the concert please transpose over here?! 😢😢😢
@@MissDaisyDuke01 I first saw Doug a bit after the Willie Picnic in an outside tent at the fair in Tucson, it was snowing! He stunned me with his incredible showmanship and ownership of the audience. Best performer I’ve ever seen and I’ve seen thousands. There’s RU-vids of him from last spring still performing at 86, when 99% of all musician/performers have quit or died... A gem who must be honored. 🌟
