Ed Welburn is the former global chief of design for General Motors and a true renaissance man. We love getting together and talking about vehicle design. While at Broadarrow auctions Amelia Island, Ed spotted a really amazing Continental Mark II. We had to take a closer look!

I have loved these Continentals from the first time I saw one at a concourse in Forest Grove Oregon. What I love are the clean lines and the absence of the ridiculous over the top fins. Go Continental!!

In 1963, when I was 16, I started work at a grocery store as a bagboy to pay for gas for my 1959 English Ford Consul. One of my first customers directed me to put her groceries in the back passenger floorboard. It was then that I noticed that her beautiful black car was so impressive that it had chrome-plated door jambs on both the door jamb and the matching rear quarter panel jamb! The car: a glorious black 1956 Continental coupe. Glorious beyond words!

I am same age as you, and my first job was at a grocery store as a stocker and carry out boy for $1.00/hour. Thought I was rich.

Have Seen one of these at a MN. Classic Car Dealer last Fall ( red in color ) Very Impressive Automobiles ! ! Also saw at least a couple in AZ. This Past January ' 24 !

The Continental Mark II was not just a pretty face. When driven at 100 mph it feels like you are sitting in the living room at home on the couch. With the windows open there is no wind noise or wind blowing through. The engineering and design went well beyond it looks.

Wonder what Ed's comments would be about the design of Exners's '62 Imperial next to it 😳. The MKII was very conservatively styled for '56... but it was, after all, designed in the early '50's.
