I have a medium size phoenix palm in London which suffered from the cold and wet winter we had this year. All the leaves went brown. I cut all the leaves off and after a few months i tried pulling the centre and half of the crown just came out. I thought oh know it's definitely dead until i saw some RU-vid videos that you should saw the top off and hope it sprouts back. Well a few days ago when i looked in the centre, I could see a few hairy buds popping up! Now they have grown ever so slightly but are getting bigger day by day. I know it will take years before it produces big leaves again, but I'm so pleased that it survived. So if the central growing point rots then don't panick and just saw the top off. The light and space will encourage it to start growing again, but only if you've sawn the top off enough. Sounds brutal but it really has worked for my palm!

Awesome video. Do you by chance know what would cause new fronds "spears" to come out lower on the crown shaft than older previous spears? Otherwise healthy palm. Also the new spears "fronds" are shorter in overall length than previous fronds lower down on the crown shaft. Thes are Montgomery palms. Planted 8 over grown ones from 15 gallon pots and three of the 8 hear over a yar later are not doing well. I am in florida with full sun. No crazy cold winters this past winter either. They get palm fertilizers 4 times a year and plenty of water from irrigation and I spot treat weekly like clock work. Thanks.

Hello Jeff!! After browning of the leaves, yellowing of the spear and the dreaded spearpull of my 8 year old Trachycarpus Fortunei bought last year here in Belgium (which I only recently repotted in a 100litre pot 2 months ago), I dropped some copper oxide solution ("bouillie bordelaise") into the empty core. I hope it was the right choice. Now, it's been a couple weeks since I put the copper oxide solution and I don't know how much longer I'm supposed to wait before escalating to sawing off the upper part of the trunk till I see some green. I don't see if there's green in the core center, even with a lamp because it's kind of deep and there are some dry leaves coming in the way (I guess protecting a bit from the rain and wind).

@@tanguydelooz2881 Hi Again Friend, hope all is well with you. Yes, palm spear grew back again...but leaves are burned, Should I cut off that entire stalk leaf for it to grow new spear? Or leave it on for the palm to receive nutrients?

@@karendo6588 Hi fellow palm caretaker, I'm not sure as I see divergent opinions. I'm not expert. I suppose when the leaf is fully brown till its base on the trunk, then it's safe to cut. I have a potted Bulgaria Trachycarpus which was frozen to the ground and saw 0°F or colder for 48 hours… the big spear pullled but the little one didn’t… so this was timely, but I’m also watching cuz I’m a subscriber… the fronds amazingly aren’t totally shot, but mostly yellow. Would you cut them off? Great to know about the fungicide after peroxide!

Hey! I don't like to prune anything off in winter unless it's mushy/might be diseased. Even I they're brown they still might be needed during a cold snap to pull up and add some protection to the center of the plant. Even if they're yellow, as long as they still have some gloss to them, meaning the cuticle hasn't dried out, then the plant might be pulling something from it, even if it's just getting some moisture for it's circulation and palms dehydrating during winter is another thing we have to contend. May as well leave em. Aside from that aspect of course I'd trim it off since yellow and brown fronds aren't doing much if anything for the plants.

Thanks for this video I’m having to deal with this for first time. Got one Pygmy Date Palm with this issue but got 3 cat palms that got hit bad by the winter snap in late December I’ll try this. I also heard on another video not to cut back to top until you saw green that it would not come and you could kill it. That did not make sense. Thanks for your timely advice
@TropicalPlantParty
@TropicalPlantParty Год назад
I think some people say not to cut them back because it's easier than trying to explain that some palms can take it and some can't. Back in the day it used to be said that only woody palms could be cut back, and then the opposite was tossed around. A lot of back and forth so I just fall back to what I've seen and experienced myself which is that it can be done to both smooth and woody trunked palms but you should know what you're doing and be prepared to fertilize frequently!

Great work there Jeff. I've tried hydrogen peroxide before with some success but I must try the distilled water wash out. I must admit if it's a cheap easy replaceable palm that spear pulls I just chuck it. A good example the Phoenix Canariensis here👍
@TropicalPlantParty
@TropicalPlantParty Год назад
Oh I do the same with easy to replace palms. This pindo in the video is probably going in the garbage since it's been a problem child since day one and that's not normal for a pindo.
@michaelmccarthy4077
@michaelmccarthy4077 Год назад
While that's not a problem I generally have to contend with here, I'm almost shocked that there wasn't some palm damage on the Royal Palms around the city after it was so cold for three days at Christmas. Now I was having a very different problem with my Foxtail but the symptoms are similar. The landscape company had been dumping too much fertilizer and it was causing the new fronds to brown and die before they fully opened and the trunk was narrowing as a result. I though it was dying but I talked to a palm nursery and they told me to try dosing with epsom salts and iron. It still looks horrible (the hurricane didn't help) but the new fronds have been opening, albeit shorter than they should be, and the trunk is beginning to widen again.
@TropicalPlantParty
@TropicalPlantParty Год назад
Sucks that they did that. Easily could have avoided that issue! Rude! Fronds should get back to normal, the trunk thickening back up is what's really good! Scrawny foxtails are no fun!

@@TropicalPlantPartyThanks for your video. Gives me a bit of hope. I had bought an 8 year old Trachicarpus Fortunei one year ago. I put it in a bigger 100Litres pot too late some weeks ago and I think I put too much water and bio fertilizer too (10L a day at some point). Yesterday I did the spear pull. So I will go buy some fungicide to treat it. I see a bit of white areas on some part of the pulled spears. I hope I find a way to make it grow back. I have 1 half palm left which is still green. After I pulled the spears, I pulled 1 palm and it was cut straight, at last but still it seemed to have a small spot of gray white fungus or bacteria. There's still a small spear deep in the middle that is probably rotten. I don't know if I'll be able to fetch and pull it.
