Here's a station sign-off for WBNG Channel 12 in Binghamton / Elmira, NY.
This aired right after The CBS Late Movie presentation of the 1978 made-for-TV film "Three on a Date" (originally aired on the ABC Network on February 17th 1978, directed by Bill Bixby and with an all-star cast including June Allyson, Loni Anderson [pre-WKRP in Cincinnati], Ray Bolger, John Byner, Geoff Edwards, Carol Lawrence, Meredith MacRae, Rick Nelson . . . and Forbesy Russell [of Who's On Call? fame), which ran from 11:30pm to 1:45am (all times Eastern Standard Time). www.fuzzymemori...
Includes:
CBS "Eye" ID (voiceover by Pat Connell)
Station sign-off with shots of the TV station facilities, some of their equipment (including an Ampex VR-2000 2" quadruplex videotape recorder), and aerial shots of the Binghamton area (voiceover by ??)
National Anthem film (performed by the Future Farmers of America and National Band) (opening voiceover by ??)
Color bars with WBNG-TV 12 logo at lower right corner of screen
" . . . located at the center of a great industrial and agricultural complex in New York and northeastern Pennsylvania - that is, Susquehanna country."
This aired on local Binghamton, NY TV early Saturday, March 10th 1984 at approximately 1:45am (EST).
About The Museum of Classic Chicago Television:
The Museum of Classic Chicago Television's primary mission is the preservation and display of off-air, early home videotape recordings (70s and early 80s, primarily) recorded off of any and all Chicago TV channels; footage which would likely be lost if not sought out and preserved digitally. Even though (mostly) short clips are displayed here, we preserve the entire broadcasts in our archives - the complete programs with breaks (or however much is present on the tape), for historical purposes. For information on how to help in our mission, to donate or lend tapes to be converted to DVD, and to view more of the 4,500+ (and counting) video clips available for viewing in our online archive, please visit us at:

I remember WBNG, and Jim Matthews and Bob Buchanan from when I was a kid. Strongest signal in the area. The anthem meant it was really late, and there was no escaping going to bed. I feel fortunate to be have the option of watching TV on sleepless nights these days.

The voice over/announcer is the late Bob Buchanan. He was the weatherman of WBNG from the mid sixties until 1998. He died of heart failure in 2007.

When I took a tour of WBNG in the mid 90s, we saw Bob Buchanan in the weather center room through the glass. We waved at him and he waved back.

I did not realize he had passed away. I really liked Mitch (he and his wife Cheryl came to Oneonta for a Pro-Am bowling benefit for the Cancer Society, and Mitch and some of his co-workers played in a benefit basketball game at SUNY Oneonta. I met Greg and Candace, wo were also very nice. Was shocked when I heard that Jim Mathews passed away. I remember seeing his last broadcast. He reported that Ricky Neson and his entourage were killed in a plane crash. 🙁🙁

Surprising national anthem for me. I grew up in Kansas City (which hosted the FFA convention for decades), and never saw an anthem with an FFA band.

That 50 Front St. building had quite a history. WBNG was on the lower level, but the remainder was one of the better hotels of its day. I believe American Bandstand was on location from the back lot there sometime in the early '60s. In the late '70s, it became a nursing home. Imagine a TV station in the same building as that! Finally there are a number of photos on the web that document the building's days after it was abandoned and awaiting redevelopment.

WBNG used the instrumental version of the CBS 1971 promo campaign "Where the Good Times Are" - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-knKY2yGnnwA.html
