When Black Women Gather (WBWG) invited women only to gather on Saturday, August 17, 2024 when we were led in conversation by Marci Duncan and Kerry Sandell, a Black woman and a White woman respectively, who wrote and perform in a must-see play about their 20 year relationship, Dissonance.
The premise of the play, which will serve as the catalyst for our conversation, focuses on exploration of their 20-year friendship as a Black woman and a White woman.
👉🏾 Are there boundaries around mixed race friendships, even if unspoken?
👉🏾 Are some subjects simply taboo or off limits? If yes, how are these non-verbal terms or conditions of friendship communicated or are they simply understood?
👉🏾 Can friendships with boundaries still be authentic?
Following the murder of George Floyd, Marci and Kerry found themselves having very different conversations around this topic and their lengthy relationship as relevant to race.
We gathered as women of varied races and ethnicities to engage in what was a candid discussion about our own cross racial relationships, personal, professional, or even familial through marriage or birth ties. Are there conversations we simply avoid?
