World Combat Championship October 17th,1995 Charlotte,North Carolina Quarterfinal Bout in the Strikers Division-Fought under Vale Tudo rules but with no submission holds allowed
Submitting and submission holds are 2 different things that have the same outcome. They are called "submission holds" because they make the opponent submit, but you can still submit without being put in a hold. To submit means to give up and you can give up by being punched too many times (which is what happened here) or if you're too tired to continue.
Half the bracket was striking wins only the other had full NHB. The finals had full NHB. The theory was that it would be a show down between strikers and grapple rs in the end. Was an experimental format.
Thank god for You Tube...I taped this event on VHS and couldnt find it...Eric Paulson doesnt get the respect he deserves...this guy trained with Rickson Gracie in the mid 80's....This tourney also shows how much of a animal Renzo was...big difference between him and Royce.

One side of the brackets had the no submission rule, the other (Renzo's) was regular NHB. The winner of the striking (Shootboxing) bracket would fight the winner of the NHB bracket in the finals. Not a bad idea.
I remember watching Eric Paulson back then fighting, and guys would always pull his hair. Finally he cut it. No submissions that was ridiculous, that's why this organization didn't last. Eric would have submitted him in the first 30 seconds of the fight.
erik paulson was barred from rickson gracie's academy because he participated in this event because renzo participated in this tournament in which he won.
It's not stupid. This was during the infancy of MMA where they were trying different sets of rules to see what can draw the most crowds. UFC at that time did not dominate this type of cage fighting and they were all trying to be the premier venue.
@nrallenuk Hm, strange. So was this the striker's bracket and that is why they only allowed them to be on the ground for a few minutes without submissions? And if so, why wouldn't Paulson have competed in the grappler's bracket?
As a 5'7 individual I was going for McCully, but, as a person with a beautiful flowing long mane, when he started yanking on that bun I was hoping for no mercy from Paulson.
His name is Erik Paulson. His name is Erik Paulson. His name is Erik Paulson. His name is Erik Paulson. His name is Erik Paulson. His name is Erik Paulson. His name is Erik Paulson. His name is Erik Paulson.
I have just about every Erik Paulson DVD instructional there is. Killers Leglocks 1, 2 and 3, 6 armbar DVDs on one DVD, Killer Chicken Wings 1 and 2, Quick Kills, Neck Cranks 1 and 2, the Hilicopoter DVD, Killer Tackles and Takedowns, CSW Student 10 DVDs, Instructor DVDs, CSW Camps, Takedowns from the Knees DVD, Striking DVD, Ground and Pound DVD, Best Defense DVDs, Black Belt DVD, Private Lessons DVD with Erik Paulson, MMA seminar DVD with Erik Paulson and more.
I remember this! I was in to jkd at the time lol Hoped Paulson had skills while assuming the thicker more muscular fighter would win. Great fight a little adversity for Erik, nothing he couldn't handle.
It's incredible that you can have this shit in America but you can't drink in a bar under the age of 21 and swearing on TV isn't allowed. Think about that.
World Combat Championship had really weird rules. The can go to the ground but they can’t use submissions? Paulson would have won far quicker if he was allowed to use his submission skill set-of I recall in this same event James Warring latched onto Paulsons hair and never let go-again with Paulson not allowed to use his submissions. Oketely
No submission’s can also be taken as “No willing quitters”. You had to go through the bare knuckle process to get to the other fights. So, no one should be talking shit about this fight. This was hella interesting. You can hair pull and head butt, that changes a lot of things. You can grab the cage, you can grab the shorts, hit the back of the head, neck and spine. Ouch
A lot of mma guys got a lot of moves and techniques in practice but you don't see them using it in a real fight they usually just wrestle and hug each other.
Some asshole put Erik in the strikers' bracket. He would have been the champion of this if didn't have to have long hair because of a movie he was acting in.
Not really, 2 codes to fight under = strikers with no submissions, and Grappling. Guarantee to have a striker vs grappler in the final. Plus is was the early days on mma in the mainstream and before the Athletic Commissions idiots got their claws into mma.
Renzo was lucky he didn't have to take on Vale or Bitonio. I believe Vale or Bitinio would've beat Renzo by sheer strength & brutality. Renzo got a cakewalk against the very unviolent Spijkers, smaller wrestler & the zero-grappling Warring. He was very lucky that Vale & Bitonio eliminated each other.
Bruce lee not called jun fan to what he practice, he called jeet kune do (or jun fan jeet kune do), and jeet kune do its a concept no a style like muay thay.

Like the under arm pit lunchboxes to muscle boys face. Wonder if Lesner picked that up from him. Seriously though, Paulson is badass! Triangle, mount, knees, and combos:D
